We ate so much chowder that day that we didn’t touch it for like 5 months after😂. Happy to say that we are back on it and can’t wait to go back to mo street for our favorite bowls! Thanks a million for the kind comment!
My wife and I are from the Monterey area, but moved away over 20 years ago. Any time we're in town visiting family, we make it a point to get chowder at Old Fisherman's Grotto and it never disappoints. Their recipe is online, but no matter what I've done to fine tune the recipe, it just doesn't turn out the same. Glad you guys enjoyed it as well!
You hit it spot on. Im about 45 minutes north from there. I grew up going there and I am 58. The statue is the father who passed away years ago. He would greet everyone who walked in. My family and I have tried every place there and that is still our favorite and only go to place to have clam chowder and a nice meal. Im happy you had a chance to experience it.
What an amazing story we had no idea! We’re glad that this video could take you back in time a little bit. We had a blast in Monterey and we took like six months off of clam chowder after this video.😂
Years ago when I lived in the area I would grab a cup of Old Fisherman's Grotto Clam Chowder and a sourdough roll and go sit on the beach and enjoy. It's a core memory.
Uh-mazing!! We honestly did not eat chowder for 6 months after this day😂. Just found out about friend worked at Schooners and he was loving this video! He said he did the same thing with the fisherman’s chowder! It’s time that we go back to Monterey!
I went to Monterey July 2024. I had the best Clam Chowder I've ever had at The Chowder House. We all were saying the same praises. I'll have to go the your top 3 favorites when I go there again. ❤
We loved Vivolo too, and since we stuffed ourselves with thick chowder, it was a nice mixup to try the thin kind. Thank you so much for watching. We’ll see you next time.
It really was incredible although we overdid it that day we didn’t eat clam chowder for at least six months after this day!😂 maybe will make it back and try and film some balls that we didn’t try on the first visit and add them to the list!
Great Clam Chowder review! I'll have to try the Clam Chowder at Old Fisherman's Grotto next time I visit Monterey, but at $20.00 dollars a bowl, it's going to be the most expensive chowder I have ever had.
We live off of Hwy 68 on Laureles Grade (between Salinas and Monterey) our two favorite places are Sand Bar and Grill as well as Old Fishermans Grotto🤩
@@HeresGoodTravel MR GROTTO. NO LONGER WITH US. THERE IS A LIFE SIZE STATUE OF HIM IN HIS RESTAURANT, NEXT TIME TAKE A PICTURE WITH IT❓ LOVE YOUR ADVENTURE!
Thanks for the recommendation! We just googled it and it looks 🔥. Our friends live in Pacifica so we go to HMB all the time! Maybe we will do a new chowder video there!
No problem! To be fair we enjoyed every one of those chowders! We didn’t eat another bowl for almost a year though… 6 is too many😂. Have fun on your trip and thanks for watching and commenting, it means the world to us!
We wish it was still canned! Somebody told us the price went up but I guess everything has too. We took months off of clam chowder after this video, but we are back on it now😂
Been cking you two out on parts of your trip.. So great to seeing you. What an exciting adventure.. So glad you teamed up with Holden at Wrigleys.. Have fun. Love ya.. Gloria
GLORIA!! Hope you're well! It was great to see Holden, we saw Grace earlier this summer too. So glad you're following on our newest crazy adventure! xoxo
You’re the second one who said that, we looked it up I think we were sitting in the same booth!!! So cool. That place was rad. Thanks so much for watching! We are thinking of doing a road trip for tri-tip in California if you know any good spots
How’d you guys make it the first 10 years without eachother!?😂 Congrats that sounds so fun. Monterrey is one of our favorite costal towns, have such a fun time!
Sandbar is on the municipal wharf. Fisherman’s wharf is the next one over. Heading back to Monterey in 2 weeks. Lived there for 2 years in the ear;y 90’s. Great video!
Thanks so much! We just found out that Clint Eastwood day in the same booth as us at sand bar on a movie shoot! Dying to go back. Thanks so much for watching
I live here in Monterey and I have been to the Grotto for their chowder. Maybe it was bad luck for me, but twice I went there and the chowder had too much salt. The second time I went it was again salty and I requested it with less salt, and it was so bland I had to salt it myself. They do bread bowls over there. Just a couple doors down is Cafe Fina, and their chowder is far better than Grotto's because their recipe has the right amount of salt.
Dang, maybe we got in on a good day. Loved the consistency and all the veggies. We will be sure to hit up Cafe Fina next time. Maybe we will try 5 more spots too!
Before it was the sandbar it was the wind jammer where Clint filmed play misty, they used to slide back the roof ontil people got seagull crap on there dish .
Somebody had mentioned this to us, it was a little before our time but we looked it up and he sat in our EXACT booth! My dad was so excited to learn this!
FYI, you don't have to pay for parking in the lot at Fisherman's Wharf if it's under 15 minutes (or at least that's how it used to be). So sometimes I'd drive in, park, get Grotto's clam chowder at the outdoor counter and leave; take it and enjoy it at one of the beaches in Carmel or Big Sur.
We did we ate our bowl of the old fisherman’s grotto at the very tip of it down. That’s why the sound got so windy! It’s a beautiful pier and something that we love visiting when we go to Monterey! Can’t wait to go back
I went to college at mpc in the early 80s. Cannery row still had cans on the row. Fisherman were real. Unfortunately Monterey has turned into douche touristville. That’s not the central coast I knew.
Holy cow we could only imagine! Do you know are there any smaller towns around that might still have a bit of that old school feel? Thanks for watching! Touristy, bomb clam chowder though😂
We weren’t there on a weekend or a peak summer day but you would probably be fine just to walk in! We also learned that Clint Eastwood filmed a scene in our booth!
Hahahah we were so bummed when we got back to edit that video. The good news is we have recovered from over-chowdering and are capable of enjoying it once again!
Absolutely fabulous clam chowder! We get it both at the restaurant and at their Fish Market right outside the door. Yummy!!!
We ate so much chowder that day that we didn’t touch it for like 5 months after😂. Happy to say that we are back on it and can’t wait to go back to mo street for our favorite bowls! Thanks a million for the kind comment!

We are gonna try to make it for sure! We ate so much chowder that trip we didn’t have any for almost a year😂. We are back in the white stuff now!
Is it better than Phil's fish market?
You hit it spot on. Im about 45 minutes north from there. I grew up going there and I am 58. The statue is the father who passed away years ago. He would greet everyone who walked in. Yes, that man's name was Sabu Shake. Back in the day when I used to go in there a lot I used to say hello to him every time.
I totally agree with your #1 spot for the best clam chowder in Monterey!
We had some great bowls on this trip! Can’t wait to go back for refills. We didn’t eat clam chowder for a long time after making this video😂
Sourdough bowl is a game changer 🤤
Maybe if we get some followers we can increase the budget😂

This video was 2022 so we need to go back and make an updated one! Let us know if you find any new spots to add to the list! Thanks for watching
Thin chowder is actually more traditional. Love Vivolo’s.
We loved Vivolo too, and since we stuffed ourselves with thick chowder, it was a nice mixup to try the thin kind. Thank you so much for watching. We’ll see you next time.
Great content! Grew up in the Bay Area so maybe I’m spoiled but Monterey has the best clam chowder
It really was incredible although we overdid it that day we didn’t eat clam chowder for at least six months after this day!😂 maybe will make it back and try and film some balls that we didn’t try on the first visit and add them to the list!
I just ran into your channel yesterday and I've been binge watching ever since! Love, love your channel and your energy!
Thank you so so much! We have a ton more fun food videos and weird road trips to come! Your kind words mean a ton!

Dang it’s $20 now! That’s insane! It was our favorite but I don’t think we paid over $10 when we were there!
We live off of Hwy 68 on Laureles Grade (between Salinas and Monterey) our two favorite places are Sand Bar and Grill as well as Old Fishermans Grotto🤩
The sand bar is such a gem! We also learned after the fact that Clint Eastwood filmed a movie scene in the booth that we sat, and how cool is that!?
I REMEMBER MR GROTTO,COW BOY HAT, PLEASANT HAPPY MAN, MISS HIM!!
BEST CLAM CHOWDER, MADE WITH MR GROTTO'S
L❤VING RECIPE.
Oh no, we didn’t see the cowboy when we were there! It’s about time we go back and see how many more bowls of clam chowder and Adam to the list!

MR GROTTO. NO LONGER WITH US. THERE IS A LIFE SIZE STATUE OF HIM IN HIS RESTAURANT, NEXT TIME TAKE A PICTURE WITH IT❓ LOVE YOUR ADVENTURE!
You all got to try Barbaras fish trap at half moon bay. Their clam chowder is to die for
Thanks for the recommendation! We just googled it and it looks 🔥. Our friends live in Pacifica so we go to HMB all the time! Maybe we will do a new chowder video there!
We have tried them all.
The Grotto it is!👍👍
The only one better is the
Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach.
Now I’m hungry!😋
We haven’t spent a lot of time in Pismo even though we went to school in Fresno, we need to get out there and see what it’s about! Thanks for watching
Thanks for the tips guys!
No problem! To be fair we enjoyed every one of those chowders! We didn’t eat another bowl for almost a year though… 6 is too many😂. Have fun on your trip and thanks for watching and commenting, it means the world to us!
Agree with #1. You used to be able to order it canned and shipped to your house.
We wish it was still canned! Somebody told us the price went up but I guess everything has too. We took months off of clam chowder after this video, but we are back on it now😂

Sandbar is where Clint Eastwood filmed some of Play Misty For Me
Omg!! We just looked it up! Same booth we sat in too! How cool. That place is legendary, great chowder too.
I lived in Monterey..the first place I’m sure Clint Eastwood filmed a scene there in play misty for me. Grotto was my go too, very consistent too
You’re the second one who said that, we looked it up I think we were sitting in the same booth!!! So cool. That place was rad. Thanks so much for watching! We are thinking of doing a road trip for tri-tip in California if you know any good spots
That's my county!! Monterey county
We had an awesome time there! So beautiful and awesome chowder!
Thanks for the tip! My friend and I are heading there to celebrate our 60th birthdays and 5O+ years of friendship.
How’d you guys make it the first 10 years without eachother!?😂 Congrats that sounds so fun. Monterrey is one of our favorite costal towns, have such a fun time!
Adding these spots to our next trip!
Any spot you’re at IS the spot!

Let's give it a shot
We got a ton of bomb food in the upcoming Videos

Amazing pro tip! Thanks so much! We can’t wait to get back to Monterey! We haven’t been since our clam chowder fest😂
Did you guys go onto the pier? Maybe I missed it
We did we ate our bowl of the old fisherman’s grotto at the very tip of it down. That’s why the sound got so windy! It’s a beautiful pier and something that we love visiting when we go to Monterey! Can’t wait to go back
We usually go to Monterey every month at least once. But we haven't for a couple of months.
It took us sooo long to get out of California because it is just so awesome.
Fucking love this!! Can’t wait to go to Monterey
Thanks for watching g bro! We woulda been in Oregon at the same time!😭
I'm going Tuesday
The secret to good clam chowder: a stick of butter in every bowl.
😂 haha truer words have never been spoken!
My favorite chowder is at Flaherty's in Carmel.
Two other people also recommended that spot after we had already made the list! We will hit it next time for sure! Thanks for the rec
they give out samples!!!
GTFO!?!? 😂 need to get in line!
@@HeresGoodTravel They stopped doing that after Covid.

Vivolo’s was really the best for a long time but recently it has fallen off a bit
That place was so good! This video was a little bit ago, we need to go back and make another one!
We were just at Vivolos last month and it still has the best chowder around!!
It's still my favorite.
Does the sandbar need a reservation?
We weren’t there on a weekend or a peak summer day but you would probably be fine just to walk in! We also learned that Clint Eastwood filmed a scene in our booth!
What about the fishermen grotto do they take reservations or just walk in?
Is there a parking around here
There are parking lots but they can be pretty expensive. There is free parking around Vivolos and they had amazing chowder!
Parking is tight on weekends..no problem weekdays
I will take good chowder over good audio any day
Hahahah we were so bummed when we got back to edit that video. The good news is we have recovered from over-chowdering and are capable of enjoying it once again!
just went to the fishhopper. super bland food, did not find a single clam in the chowder
That one was kinda more of a potato soup for sure😂
