  • We bought an old, mysterious Japanese house (which we promptly demolished and built our new, current house on top of). Probably never going to get answers for some of the things we found, but it's all gone now so oh well!
For many older houses in Japan, affordability/availability was prioritized over longevity, and there were a lot of environmental factors to consider (high humidity, natural disasters). In part due to this, old houses here lose much or all of their value as they age, and many houses that go up for sale are either renovated or torn down and built over by the new owners.
Nowadays technology has improved a LOT (along with safety requirements!) so modern Japanese houses can be very high quality and long-lasting, depending on the options you choose. We ended up building a wonderful house perfectly suited for us and our cats, and with a great view of our back yard! Tour of that coming soon. :D

This is the previous house that was on our property before we tore it down and built our current house!
It felt super weird being able to walk through a house that was technically ours but not really ours. The previous owners were really nice, and we talked to them about our plans to demolish the house and build over it if we bought their property (they were totally fine with it). They actually stopped by after our new house was built (Jun had questions about the well) and we gave them a tour. We are so grateful we were able to receive such a beautiful property from them--they kept such an amazing yard with so many fruit trees and GIGANTIC rhododendron and hydrangea bushes. And it came with a community cat (Rin-chan) who we now also take care of! We adore this place and our new neighborhood so much!

When my mom got the house they remodeled the entire home--- and made 1/2 of that porch into a big laundry room/pantry area--- the windows are still there though and they just kind of built a wall around the outside. My much younger siblings never got to see the old house and were so confused why there are windows in a closet with no view but the inside of the walls.

My childhood home was my grandparents' old garden shop/home. Back when it was a shop the living space was on the upper floor and the bottom floor was shop space. By the time I was born it hadn't been a shop in many years but the "entry hall" is still to this day the big open concrete room where the till stood, dad's hobby hallway (a very long workbench with electrical projects) was where they tied bouquets once upon a time and at the far end of that hallway is the teeny tiny customer toilet. The downstairs living room used to be a garage.
The upper floor kitchen, bathroom and main bedroom were added around the time my grandparents moved in I think, dad mentioned once that they had to dig into the slope behind the house to expand the upper floor space. As a teenager I slowly realized that no one else I knew had the kitchen upstairs. Everyone has their kitchen on the ground floor except my dad because when the kitchen was built the ground floor was reserved for customers.

Your decision to rebuild really makes sense. My wife and I were in the same situation (ie lived in a Japanese house from that era that just wasn’t built to last more than 30 years, and wasn’t worth renovating.) And we also made the decision to knock it down and completely rebuild. Which I know isn’t as COOL as an extreme renovation…but we don’t regret it now that we’re in the new place!
Also, the process of designing the new place and seeing the construction coming together (traditional Japanese wood frame style but modern esthetic) was really cool. Got the whole series on my channel if you wanna check it out!

One house had steps everywhere, hall connecting to kitchen a step, kitchen to living room two steps, bathroom had one heart attack step, even upstairs they had steps off of the main room to the bedrooms. There was also a different house where everything was looking fine until we went into one of the bedrooms. They had cut a panel out of the carpet showing a hatch in the middle of the room to the horror like basement. There was a main door off the entrance into the garage but then also the door off of that one bedroom into the single garage. Oooh... That was fascinating! I've done something similar before, only it was my own house, the one I grew up in. When my father died, my mother lived there a few years; we, their kids, all had sentimental feelings for the house and the yard (large, with fruit trees and 40-foot pines) and really didn't want it to be sold, but she had some health issues and none of us were rich. My sister was a property broker, so she handled it and it became part of her business' rental property. Years later after our mom had died, I was visiting and wanted to drive through our old neighborhood, and as we passed out house I said "Oh look, it's been foreclosed on." My sister said "WHAT" in a very flat voice and pulled over; turned out the house had been actually *sold* to a renter and then, yep, foreclosed on. So we went in and looked around... through the large doggy-door on the side, which my dad had installed. She called the person in charge of foreclosed property while we were there and let them know we were in it so we wouldn't be arrested, but it was really strange, walking up the step from the dining room and remembering helping my dad frame the concrete for that, seeing a corner of the fireplace hearth and knowing we'd put an old silver dime in there for luck before it was mortared closed. There was still the horseshoe above the fireplace that we'd left, and brass matchsafe by the mantle; we took them with us, we'd left both of them behind. Most of the fruit trees were still alive, and we took cuttings and some seedlings. It was like being ghosts in our own home.

I find this so interesting, in europe we " learn " via cultural osmosis that americans move cross their continent every few years and that their wooden frame houses fall apart because of termites after 20 years anyway. So to us it would seem a bit redundant to buy a house then and not rent. I guess it's all a matter of perspective .

In New Zealand newer houses are built better. They didn’t have as much access to good building materials when older houses were built or it was expensive so most old houses are just wooden. There was an Earth in my city in 2012 and a lot of older buildings fell because they hadn’t been built to modern earthquake standards. Plus old houses only have like single glazed windows and are really cold and since they’re all wooden they can rot easily.

Kitchen/bathroom units can't be removed. The previous owners actually wanted to take their unit kitchen with them but it wasn't possible. There's also not much of a used market here for things, especially older house parts, which is why it's customary to demolish the whole thing and build over it. We tried to keep what we could realistically use!

I think it would be more weird if it was being sold to live in but the owners probably expected for it to be demolished by whoever bought it so it wouldn’t of really mattered what was in that room. They probably just had personal stuff in there they didn’t want people to see or something. Or it might of been a messy storage room.

Years ago, I went out house hunting with my mother. There was a particular house we toured that had a "closet" in the kitchen, but it was just a set of stairs that led up into the wall and another closet in a weird shaped room with that had a window we couldn't see from the outside with curtains over it. We could see the frame, see the edges of the panes of glass, and it would be a decent place for a window if we just removed the walls for the closet around it. We pulled the curtains open and... There was siding. An addition was apparently built and removed, and that's all that was left. It was still really weird, though. The stairs going into a wall at least made sense, don't know why they didn't at least free up that window at least.
