My safety chip is before entering an intersection. Even if my light is green, or turns green and I have the right away, I make it a habit to look in both directions opposite of me to make sure nobody has ran a light.

YES. I do this no matter what car I drive. A few years ago we _almost_ got hit by someone trying to beat the red light, speeding through at 40 mph. That car passed probably 3 feet in front of us as we slammed on the brakes.

you need a centered 3rd brake light-- seriously, they are a lifesaver. There are options for all kinds of mounting, and it really makes a difference. I've got a 10" LED strip that I'm putting on my '63 Beetle, mounting on my license plate frame.

    • @CAHelmer

Wanted to say the same thing. The third break light in addition to the high mounted amber lights would be a great addition as people are accustomed to items in their direct line of sight. You could mount it up high on a bus or in the window. Either way helps. Some of the strips also and in addition to providing breaking information also signal turns. Always helpful.

3rd LED brake light from GoWesty in the middle of the rear window! Best safety feature I've added to my '71 bay window bus. It's super bright and lights up super fast, plus it has a small indicator bulb I can see in my mirror to let me know it's working. I also changed out my taillights for the european style that separate the turn signals from the brake/running lights and makes them amber as well. Wolfsburg West sells the kits for converting them.
The rear of my bus went from dim, only red lights that acted as running, brake, and turn signals to having 3 distinct and separate brake lights with 2 distinct amber turn signals. I also put one of those reflective magnets that says "Vintage vehicle, pass with caution". Now that I have a roof rack I'll eventually add lights and reflectors up there, too.

Mostly I just stay very aware of what is happening behind me. Impatient drivers are the biggest threat I find. I pull over whenever possible and usually take back roads to get where I'm going. It takes longer but that's really the point. A slow driving VW allows you to take in the sights, and hopefully enjoy the ride. Stay safe.

Busses aren't very stable so, as others have said, Seat Belts Proper lap & sash. I cannot understand why the U.S. has only red lights to the rear. 99% of countries use a separate amber for rear indicators. 1 red light doing driving/stop/indicator is nuts.

    Hello friends of VW Life,
in your video about safety with a T1. shows you an extra brake light with the text stop on the rear bumper.
For safety's sake, when I was restoring my T1 bus, I placed a stop light on the inside of the tailgate against the window. so that the stop light is high and the traffic behind me can see this clearly. both the person driving right behind me and the person driving behind.
Because the extra light is in the bus, it is also safer and less vulnerable.

How about also putting on the emergency flashers when stopped or coming to a stop on busy roads?
Where do you get LED bulbs for the brake lights? And are they "plug and play" or are modifications needed?
Also it's easy to install a "Lights On" buzzer that can be purchased at any NAPA parts store -- you just use the two alligator clips at the fusebox -- cheap and effective to warn you when the lights are left on when you turn off the ignition.

I was going to say, as a long time (now retired) truck driver. DOT always required "amber to the front, Red to the back"...just sayin'. Also, an extra ground wire on CB antennas helps in being able to hear and "get out", so to speak. Thanks much guys. Todd the retired trucker.
