    AW HECK YEAH SHE’S BACK!!!
Oh my goodness, when I found out that she was releasing a new album, I was pretty excited ngl, and after listening to it all the way through as soon as it came out, I thought the album was pretty great. I like a lot of the tracks here and the themes of motherhood that she explores on here were very well executed to me. Her Mother’s House is probably my favorite track in the bunch for how ethereal it sounds, plus the fact that her daughter is featured on this song makes it all the more wholesome for me.
Overall, really great comeback album. I can safely say that the five year long wait was worth it.

Fossora feels like a friendly giant foraging for mushrooms in a dense, musky Forrest with creaking insects and spontaneous birdsongs. Love it! Fantastic return from the queen of music fr!

Vespertine is my favorite album of hers and if I were to rate this album it would be 9/10.

Fossora was nice definitely a step up from Utopia. The whimsical elements from her previous album are still there but I feel like there's a much better balance with the addition of more calmer spacier moments aswell as noisy moments. I don't think this album will overthrow Homogenic as my favorite work from her but I really appreciate the fact that she still making interesting music even after all these years. Like you said a Pop infused Gabber-Reggaeton album with a motherhood and fungi thematic is the kind of thing that only an artist like Björk could come up with and I think that is pretty cool.
On another note is nice to see some Volta appreciation specially considering how overlooked it is and that a lot of people just write it off as "oh yeah that album where she did a collab with timbaland" when in reality the album offers so much more in both songwritting and production.

With Post, it is scattershot but in a good way. She has said herself that she did that so nobody could see anything coming

    cool that you review this!
I am probably more on the side of Anthony Fantano but it's cool that she gets still so much attention. There are great songs on this project, even though I think, after a few listens, that the album is a bit long-winded generally and some ideas don't pan out that well.
hopefully the next project will get me more excited. She stays one of my favorite musicians out there today!

She's gone off the radar. She has enough money to last her several lifetimes, so she is now just doing whatever she wants to do. A great musician, a great artist, but don't expect anything catchy or poppy here. It's just Bjork, doing what Bjork does. But then again, that's all you should ever want from an artist.

    • @nodezsh

If her statements are to be believed, she used to make pop because she thought music for her had to be accessible.
And more lately, on Utopia, she pointed out that Arca leaned more towards her b-sides and more obscure influences which she didn't usually use on her studio albums.
So Fossora is actually extremely experimental for her. It's even possible she'll walk away from this. Or she could double down. As you said, she can now do whatever she fancies.

you bring up a great point near the end. Who else is doing stuff that challenges and rewards the listener almost 30 years into their career? Some of the classic IDM bands of the 90's need to take a page from this playbook (yes Orbital, Chem Bros I am looking at you)

(would personally argue Monsters Exist was still pretty dang fresh & inventive for Orbital and the Chemicals have never been all that "challenging" to begin with, but whatever lol)

Oh my gosh, finally a person who enjoys Volta! I can't understand how people are so lukewarm on that one either. For me, it is her second-best album after Homogenic. It's SO good (apart from a couple of weak tracks) that it stands up kilometres above the other nonsense she was releasing at the time (Vespertine, Medulla, Biophilia, etc.). The production is perfect, the songwriting is excellent and memorable, Björk's voice sounds stronger than ever before and blends with the music better than usual. I don't normally like brass, but this is without a doubt the best horns have ever sounded on an album in all musical history (I especially love the foghorns and ocean sounds tying everything together). Wanderlust has Björk's best music video ever, and Declare Independence is the best song she has ever made.
But that's not what this video is about, whoops 😅As far as Fossora goes, I don't enjoy it too much, but I have some similar thoughts to The Wonky Angle, actually. It sounds very much in the same vein as Vulnicura and Utopia (both albums I disliked), but less meandering and overall just better. It was brutal putting Atopos at track 1 though, because that's the best song she's made since Volta and the rest of the album has no chance living up to the monumental heights set by that song. I think I prefer Biophilia, but they are at a similar level.
Great video, btw. Now that you point it out, I can see how much your reviewing has improved since the previous Björk video you mentioned.

I think that sixth track would be pronounced, very roughly, "FAH-goort EHR ee FYER-thoom." Also! Biophilia is a friend of mine's favourite Björk album. She'll probably enjoy this one. :3

nah I'm actually quite happy with my Ae discography review, heck I consider that series the point at which my reviewing standards reached the level they sit at nowadays. the Elseq review from 4 years prior is the only one I actively cringe at and what I was referring to more in this video's intro (and I got some more clarified thoughts on that project out in the wtb ranking so there you go)

@@TheWonkyAngle Can't blame me for trying. I love Ae and to this day love rewatching your videos on them. Never thought yoyr critique was cringe or anything, just love what u bring to the table regarding the artist's work. Heck, I especially anticipate finding out how your opinions will differnfrom my own on certain tracks. Keep providing those wonky angles 🤙

Yeah, I think this is her worst album to date. Conceptually Björk promoted this as being "club music for the living room" and I honestly fail to see how. Genre wise this album is all over the place; it feels like a mix of all her albums since 'Post' but particularly 'Homogenic', 'Medúlla', 'Volta' and 'Utopia'. There are songs on here that are so bad by Björk's standards that it's actually laughable; too many tracks feel like incomplete motifs and not fully fleshed out songs. It's almost as if songwriting was given the least amount of attention on this album. Just when I thought Björk couldn't make a more filler album than Utopia or an all-around weaker album than Volta, she somehow managed to do just that. This is the first album where I feel like she tried too hard to be arty and avant-garde while neglecting tangible musicality.
    (6/10)
FAVS: Ovule*, Ancestress, Victimhood, Fungal City, Allow, Fossora, Her Mother's House
