Each area/group has their own interpretation of traditional grip; there are some good general tips for all trad grips tho, like trying to keep your back two fingers on the stick for legato strokes, a big "pizza slice" angle, a slight left hand angle since the stick lays on top of the hand vs under on the right hand, and leading with the wrist. There may have either been some general applicable tips that you weren't applying, some group-specific stuff, or they were just wrong. Trad is a whole can of worms for sure!
Honestly, it's different from how I learned it:having your first finger on top of your middle, and you're ring stacked on your pinky while the stick is between the center bones of your finger
I’m terrible with traditional grip. I watched a UA-cam video w/ Vinny Colaiuta playing sometime in the 90’s. Vinny is crashing on this huge China cymbal to left of his hihat w/ his traditional grip hand !!!!!! My hands hurt just watching Vinny do that. Crashing on cymbals and hitting my rack tom/floor tom feel extremely awkward for me and my hands hurt terribly after. Mad respect ✊ to you drummers who use it and sound amazing . Watching how fluid and fast Buddy Rich could go around the kit with traditional grip still leaves me in total awe. I definitely think traditional grip has its place when playing very light patterns on the snare and I also bust out the traditional grip when I play Levon Helm songs from The Band, especially cripple creek. Traditional grip is the only was I can nail those little drags he does so well. That swampy funky half time feel sounds great when you play it correctly
Small tip: to find the balance point for the stick, split the stick into thirds, and the perfect balance point should be a third out from the butt of the stick
Hey bro, I absolutely love your videos and you're how I learned to play traditional bc no one else would teach me lmao. I can't find the link to your ebook in the description, could you link it in a reply? Thanks!
I'm a Scottish pipe band snare drummer, and we use traditional grip, but if I was playing like this I would definitely be scolded for having my thumb crossing over the stick too much- also we don't use our index finger for control. It's a different style of snare drumming obviously obviously but I think it's interesting how even though it's technically the same grip we use it so differently
You exert more energy when trying to play faster with higher stick heights which will cause you to burn out way faster than necessary. It takes practice and effort to play with lower stick heights
What benefits does trad grip have for a normal drumset? Curious because I figured it was used for the slant during marching. Guitar player here, so please excuse my ignorance

I did it just like this in high school, but my fellow drumline members always said I was doing it wrong
Sounds like you were correct, and they were wrong.

Same bro but this guy is just a master. Musicians know when others are masters
You are amazing! This technique for traditional grip is the most comfortable for me and was so easy to learn! Thank you so much
I love your attitude lmfao. Best tutorial tbf
Thank you! This is so much clearer than the explanations I get from other people in my drumline lol
Absolutely. ***The GOD of Drumming: Mr. Buddy Rich***👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Can't be Beaten~!!!!!
I can control my stick like a wizard controls his wand. ❤
I’ve honestly never been more inspired to by an ebook than when he violently suggested I do so.
Skills and wearing that smooth Fox jersey. Love it.
I've been searching for this vid for DAYS
Thanks!! Noone ever taught me traditional grip and this is really useful!
Awesome job. More traditional needed!!!
Him: so that make sure you dont fu-

Straight to the point
I love it, nice video.
If it’s raining you want your palm wet but not holding water.
I feel so laid back in this grip while behind the kit. I can play for hours. The speed is ridiculous.
Straight, to the point…..good job
Great short video
Congrats sir, this is what we want to... brilliant tutorial. Thank you very much
I'm sure you know this, but you're actually the effing man.
Thanks man. Ima give it a try.
This is basically a blast beat, but in a different way 😂
This was how I was originally taught. I had to teach myself open grip.
thanks bro
Nice work sunshine
Awesome.
Not sure why traditional is even used, it was only started because of how marching drummers held their drums high with a shoulder strap
Looks cool
Small tip: to find the balance point for the stick, split the stick into thirds, and the perfect balance point should be a third out from the butt of the stick
What type of drum does this man use (I do not mean what type of drum manufacturer, but rather what part of the kit he took from?

Thanks for the tips! I play the drums but never knew how to use the stick like that! Appreciate you bro🤟🔥
I’m watching this because of Michael Shreive 😭
Yes, the right way to hold !!🇺🇲🦅🇺🇲
Traditional on top

As a saxophonist, why am I watching this

My teacher teach me in school
But i just teach myself to use stick trick
What kind of drum is that? Sound so cool
Marching snare
Depending on where you play. You might want to put the index and middle finger over the stick with ur thumb on ur index
No need for the middle finger being over the stick, but if that's how someone want's to use Traditional Grip, then awesome to them.
Probably why everyone hates Traditional Grip 🤷🏾♂️
I rarely use match grip now days
Don’t tell me how to live my life!! 😝
Can't even watch a drum video with my mom anymore 💀
Did you ever march DCI?
I used traditional grip through the late 1970s and 1980s DCI drum corps. I later switched to match grip and never looked back.

916!
How do you do you bounce flip with your stick
forgot to put middle finger on top of the stick
This actually helped, but I thought you put your index and your middle finger over the stick?? Not just your index?
I don’t use my middle finger because I found that my index finger gives me enough stick control.
@@sdjmalik ah, okay, thank you, but that begs the question, how do you match the strength of your dominant hand to your opposing hand
That’s where training helps. You can download my ebook for more information on it: sdjmalik.com/free-pdf-guide
Why learn traditional over matched? im still deciding whats best for me
Concert sticks on a marching snare? They are gonna break so easily
I’m using marching snare sticks though.
i cant do traditional with my left hand but i can do it with my right
Is there a secret for good velocity when playing low? Or is it something that will come with time and playing?
You exert more energy when trying to play faster with higher stick heights which will cause you to burn out way faster than necessary. It takes practice and effort to play with lower stick heights
sadly i dont have any drums but i hope i will eventually but it also might disturb my neighbors so i dont know or i could use my ahed who knows
Trad grip hurts my bone where it rests.

Hello sir I’m in highschool drumline & I am struggling with visuals & mostly stroke rolls do you have any advicd
If the drum isn't tipped, you use match grip or you're wrong.
Huh, only if I didn’t have stitches in my right index finger 🤔
Joue moiñ du reggae
Bro forgot to say pause,💀
once I start speeding up the stick keeps sliding forward. is there any point of pressure to keep this from happening?
Your index finger over the top of your stick should prevent that from happening
Hello how are you doing today
You're from sac?
Anybody else holding a right hand? Or just me
Do i have to hold the stick sideways with my left hand or can i just use my right?
You can use whatever grip you want. There’s no rules to individual drumming 👍🏾
@@sdjmalik ok thanks
But why would i do traditional grip?
Hey
Hey
Hey
there's different styles so i'll probably be f* as a snare
