- Disney's "The Lion King" was a smash hit at the box office in the summer of 1994, but some parents were concerned the movie might be too upsetting for kids. Others felt the movie taught an important lesson. News Source 13's Jane Flasch filed this report July 4, 1994.

“Too graphic for children?” NO! There was not a single moment in the film where I thought it was too graphic outside of maybe the silhouette of Scar being killed.
Only idiots think it's too graphic without knowing that Disney is not just for kids.
And it's a silhouette for a reason. Disney's main demographic is for kids and for adults to feel in touch with their inner child
We’re all gonna learn about disturbing topics at some point. But if needed to be explained to younger audiences, do it in a way that will have them understand and not let them be permanently affected
Children are also going to be scared of something in their lives now and then, which is part of growing up. You can't shield everything from them or they'll grow up ignorant.
Extraordinary. Hard to believe that it’s been 3 decades and since then, the movie turned into a franchise like no other. It was able to keep its winning streak until Frozen came along and a TV show sprouted that ultimately expanded the lore behind this universe. In fact, it became such a global phenomenon that I’ve seen fan-fiction made series in UA-cam that took inspiration of it and even provided a backstory of Scar, the most notorious and devilish antagonist in the pantheon of Disney villains. Plus, this is the film that Hans Zimmer won an Oscar for the score that he provided and from there, his career has grown into legendary status that he did it again for the live-action remake. Man, what a time to be alive. 🦁
It’s Not Graphic. Lion King Is A Wholesome Movie For All Kids
Definitely
Now, we’re having a 30th anniversary celebration of the lion 🦁 king 👑 movie rereleasing next week.
I was born in that year which means I’m also 3 decades old
@@christophermichaelclarence6003 that’s awesome
This news anchor spoiled Mufasa’s death harder than Homer spoiled The Empire Strikes Back

What about Bambi? Sleepy Hollow? The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Friggin' Met?
There's quite a few more pre-1994 examples I can bring up. Hell, Black Cauldron came out not evern a decade before and they're saying THIS is too graphic?
What was disturbing about the Whale segment of Make Mine Music?
@ZacharySiple he pretty much got shot by a harpoon while performing for some whalers. He won't get to perform at the met now but he DOES perform for a sold-out Heaven
@@idkany293 Oh, that's right, thank you. :)
It's not graphic, holy shit 🤦♀️
Lol
They should should see stuff they do now lol
Meanwhile who’s getting kicked out a Disney park for that graphic language, Sir Irony?
The Lion King is not any less graphic than the following:
Make Mine Music: The whale dies.
Sleepy Hollow: The scary headless horseman.
Bambi: Mom gets shot
Fun and Fancy Free: Donald Duck trying to chop a cow up with an axe Jack Torrance style
Sleeping Beauty: Dragon Maleficent gets stabbed by a sword.
The Aristocats: Edgar trying to stab O'Malley with a pitchfork.
The Fox and the Hound: Todd's mom gets shot.
The Black Cauldron: EVERYTHING!!
Oliver and Company: Sykes getting smashed inside his car by a metro train.
The Little Mermaid: Ursula gets impaled by the ship's bow.
Beauty and the Beast: Gaston literally backstabbing the beast.
Aladdin: Him almost drowning and taking a swipe at snake Jafar with his dagger.
Pocahontas: Kocoum getting shot and killed as well as the references to genocide, bigotry and colonialism of the Americas. Oh and John Smith gets shot by Ratcliffe taking a bullet for the chief.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Frollo kills Quasimodo's mom, sniffing Esmeralda's hair like some Bill Cosby wannabe, the song Hellfire, Frollo's intentions of Hitler-style genocide of gypsies and Frollo falling to his death by fire.
Hercules: Herc fighting the Hydra and Meg getting crushed to death by a pillar.
Mulan: Her wiping out a Hun army by avalanche and Shan Yu's infamous line: "The little girl will be missing her doll. We should return it to her!"
Tarzan: His parents get killed by the leopard Sabor along with Kerchak's only biological son. And of course Clayton getting himself hanged by a vine.
Atlantis The Lost Empire: Com. Rourke getting crystalized to death and Helga gets thrown off the flying vehicle.
Brother Bear: Kenai killing the bear.
Tangled: Gothel stabbing Flynn.
These are the only ones I can think of.
Snow White with the Queen telling the Huntsman to bring Snow White’s heart to her and then getting smashed by a boulder at the end of the movie.
Dumbo with him getting teased and bullied. His mom gets locked in a cage for trying to protect him and Dumbo gets drunk with Timothy Mouse.
Alice In Wonderland the Queen of Hearts wants Alice’s head off.
Frozen: parents drown, also main character gets turned into an ice statue and later left to die by her abusive boyfriend
Big hero 6: Tadashi gets burned alive and hiro nearly dies multiple times (not to mention hiro almost MURDERS someone)
Encanto: Pedro gets slaughtered off screen
Parents like this are the reason why movies like Frozen and Finding Dory have to get PG ratings today.
I can see really young kids being really upset at Mufasa's murder, but it showed that death is part of THE CIRCLE OF LIFE, you know, like the message of the opening song?
But now our PG movies are more safe then the G rated movies of my childhood (I was born in 1998) because of complaints like this.
I was a little sensitive too as a kid, but I wouldn't trade scenes like Mufasa's death for anything. They're important lessons for children.
5 years before The Lion King released, Honey I Shrunk The Kids came out and that has a live action ant getting killed by a scorpion and kids almost getting hit with a lawn mower. That's PG, and I can see that- it's a bit more intense than a bloodless death from a cartoon lion.
But like I said, complaints like this are why "safer" movies get PG ratings today.
As someone who loves The Lion King, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. Today, some of them are G, but most of them are PG. I knew one time that my younger sister was crying because of Moana’s nightmare in the film “Moana”, side note that Moana is one of those movies that would be rated G, but got that PG rule. One of my friends mentioned that there was some sort of warning on the film “Aladdin” (NOT THE LIVE ACTION ONE) about a few scenes, on Disney+. I’d have to say: for the fact that if (For Example: EXAMPLE MOVIE-“Frozen” (like you mentioned)) Frozen was rated G, there probably would be some angry Parents about a few scenes from the movie. Maybe to that fact that the movie will get a warning about a few scenes on Disney+. The “safer” movies can sometimes get a G rating, but mostly: a PG rating.
@@MaddieRedDrink The warning for Aladdin might have been for Arabian stereotypes or something. I've read complaints that it's ISLAMOPOBIC. Like, what?
And yet Cars 2 showed torture and on-screen murder via a car's engine blowing up inside of them and that was rated G
@@aceproductions43 That's the MPAA for you. Have you seen Nostalgia Critic's video Does PG Mean Anything Anymore?
@@ZacharySiple yes I have
🤦♂️why is it that nearly every kid's media that features a LITTLE bit of violence gets this treatment? First, Power Rangers, now Lion King!? I've seen the movie countless times since i was a kid, and there was NO graphic stuff it. No blood, no guts, nothing was graphic! Besides, Disney was trying to address the topic of losing a loved one, much like they did in Bambi. Besides, there's stuff ive seen in kids movies that are WAY worse than Mufasa's death.
Even bloodier?
I remember having the VHS Tape of The Lion King. It is My Favorite Disney Movie
I was too little to see these Disney Renaissance films in theaters, but what a treat that must have been for children and adults to experience them for the first time on the big screen.
Just imagine hearing that NAAAAAAAA-SIII-GONYAAAAAA against the rising sun in a movie theater. This really was peak Disney
0:48
Actually he knew from the moment Scar said those harrowing words to him. You can see it in his eyes.
I still remember the preview from The Fox and the Hound vhs
This news report spoiled the picture!
When I saw Corpse Bride in theaters for the first time, i do remember this child coming out of the theater saying that he liked that movie. See that's a film that has themes of death as well as some creepy moments but he didn't seem to mind. I think it helped that that movie had a more optimistic tone than what you would expect. I say, get to know your child and let them decide what they think is too much for them. As long as it ends on a happy note and has moments to lighten it up, he or she shouldn't have a problem.
I love The Lion King, one of my favorite Disney movie, but although this film is magnificent, the film can be intense, especially with the Stampede scene and it was considered one of the emotional but intense scene in a Disney film. But just remembered, this is a Disney film for everyone who loves this film. Here's to 30 years of The Lion King
30 years later and this film is still the highest grossing traditional animated film of all time.
My first movie I saw. I was 3
I was a baby when the lion king was in theaters
Same
Least whiny and negative news media story...
Glad that I grew up in a time when Disney had balls and was willing to take risks.
There's no blood in the Lion King movie when Mufusa died.
Although, there were scratches and intense fights.
I see what you mean. Like many Disney films, animated or live-action, The Lion King seems to aim for the 6 to 12 age demographic, ignoring preschoolers all together.
They just casually left out the detail that the death was OFF SCREEN, huh?
I saw it when it came out, I was three. It was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. I remember very little but the little I do remember I treasure fondly! To think this was peak Disney.
Thirty years later, Mufasa’s death is still labeled by many as “The most notorious character death in cinematic history.”
And this is why the movie is such a watershed moment in family movies, in particular from Disney.
(Also a side note, you can tell how small this news market was based on the 90s sound mixing.)
If it was, Mufasa’s corpse would be bloody and Scar’s death would be onscreen.
#DisneyDiva ❤
This is awesome, thank you for uploading this video.
I love The Lion King very much.
I’m not gonna lie, I am 30 years old & The Lion King still makes me cry. At the same time, it’s easily one of Disney’s best animated films. Much better than that overrated Frozen crap
We don’t like graphic movies but we like different movies that aren’t graphic
I wasn't I wasn't born in 1994 only 1996.
Not too graphic! I saw it lots of times because there were no blood presented in this film (not counting scratches on Shenzi and Banzai) besides, it’s a circle of life. Remember what Mufasa said: “When we die, our bodies will become the grass so the antelopes eat the grass”.
Mufasa dies
Spoiler alert, much!
People complain about everything nowadays
People have always complain since the dawn of earth.
Man this video was late
The movie just turned 30 last month
GRAPHIC? I DON'T THINK SO SINCE I WAS 3 GOING ON 4 WHEN IT WAS RELEASED THAT SUMMER AND I TURNED 4 A MONTH AFTER IT'S RELEASE. BUT I CAN SAY THE LION KING WAS DARK BUT ENJOYABLE.
But yet no one has complained that The Hunger Games (a film also marketed towards a younger demographic) was too graphic for its target audience smh
Yeah they did.
Hunger Games was hella controversial when it first came out. Were you living under a rock?
Also, Hunger Games was aimed at teens and young adults, not children.
