realtalk, Milanote is awesome. I really hope they keep it free, its so nice to have a professional-looking place to get my trash goblin ideas together.
Not gonna lie, Milanote might be the best thing since silk thread. I have so many cosplays and projects to work on and I have always just used poster boards. Budget sheets, fabric swatches, print outs of website listings for buttons… all of this could go straight onto milanote. And links would be so much nicer to have than a print out of an Etsy button advertising. 😅 I must have this! Plus I do wedding planning and this would be great for that too!
As a geologist, interdisciplinary stuff is so important to basically every field, and segregating things into separate boxes does no field any favours. Love the design, can't wait to see the finished project!
So true! I'm an American historian who teaches in an interdisciplinary program (we used to be a dept but my CA university decided to try to eliminate us) and I'm such a better researcher, writer, teacher and creative person after 20 years of interdisciplinary studies.
Historian here. Upper level classes are mostly class discussion, the prof ensures everyone can speak and does elevator pitch explanations of historical events that someone brings up that might’ve been from an elective, outside reading, or buried in the “world history in 2 semesters starter pack” type files. We also brought in knowledge from the hard sciences, the other social sciences, stuff contemporary novelists included as a given in social interactions, stuff we found out when we or a loved one was diagnosed with something that leads to a diet change so that diet those sailors ate eating… 1% of them gonna have problems, hope their first voyage was a island hop!. My father was the biochemistry professor whose gen ed class took us through history from how stuff artisans did before writing (pottery, a few dyes) worked to how the philosophers guessed to the way each firm known was figured out. My bio gen ed was “Plants and Civilization” with a lot ofhow plants work but why having say a complete protein plant in your region let each major religion offer a “try vegetarian” optional level, stuff like that Love interdisciplinary stuff!
As someone who does a traditional craft (Jewish papercutting) I came here to yell about this. My academic background in the arts and religious anthropology are extremely relevant to my art (even if it took ten years and ADHD medication to finally fit it together 😅)
I remember that. I think she mentioned using paper that had regularly spaced dots to help keep everything straight. I went to after Christmas sales and bought up all I could find. I still have some.
I obtained (for free) 15 rolls of wrapping paper for this very reason. The paper feels like paper grocery bags and has a 1” grid on the back side. So not only is it EXTREMELY useful for drafting, I don’t feel guilty about disposing of scraps because there’s no glossy coat to exclude it from my recycling bin, as per city ordinance where I live.
I share these videos with my teenager, who lost her mother a decade back to cancer because it is so like watching her mother engage in research and construction for new costuming projects, which she worked on every year that she was with us.
i think that the combination of creativity and academia is what i like so much about this channel, so I agree they go together well! A lot of arts also require academic study to do well, like reading books on music theory or tailoring.
12:31 - "Dumpster stays", "a look" -- I think the goth clubs are going to to get really crazy after this. I'm excited to use this hack. Thank you for inspiring, as always!
I'm sure you already know this, but in his original portrait of Madame X, Sargent had the model's right shoulder strap appearing to have "slipped" down. Well. THAT was just a bridge too far in 1884, and the painting was deemed absolutely scandalous. Sargent quickly "fixed" the strap back onto her shoulder. It was amusing that the first thing you did in your preliminary sketch was to slip that strap down again. Brava!
Absolutely! I was also going to make mention of the chain returning to the slipped position. 😆 I'm so glad there's another Art History buff sharing this wonderful tidbit of info that illustrates the prevalent and inseparable interwoven connection between art/craft and society (and it's ideas of propriety), as well as the subsequent inevitable irony that occurs when we revisit or reflect on those once closely held rules and beliefs of propriety in "proper society." Brava indeed! 👏
I adore how Bernadette goes into the process of design, looking at the history, cobbling ideas together, and her drawings. The design she has come up with and her theme has a whole Demeter goddess of the harvest thing going through it. I can't wait to see how it turns out
I feel like compromising between one's passions for accuracy and history, and one's desire for fantasy and "oooh that's pretty", is where a special kind of creativity comes in. You make stuff not just because it looks nice and pleases you, but also you have historical (and often, practical and interesting) reasons for doing things the way you do them, for where you choose to compromise and blend things together. Something about that makes my lizard brain happy. Creativity with extra meaning to the creator.

The wonder and joy when you talk about historical clothing is the main reason I'm here, honestly. Throughout most of school I kinda didn't care about history at all, most especially when it was all "memorize these dates, blah blah." I adore stories, but school didn't teach the past AS a story, just as a set of test questions :( YOU, like all my favorite history folks on UA-cam, make the past into something far more interesting, and you feel such passion and joy that it's not possible to be completely unmoved. The artistry and beauty that you explore and create is frosting on the cake so to speak! I really love this idea, a harvest moon and high priestess sort of vibe - the headress (veil?) in your rendering reminds me a lot of moon-goddess images from fantasy paintings, or perhaps the Egyptian inspirations of the various mystics that were so popular around the Victorian era. I read a LOT of light historical fantasy novels (Mercedes Lackey has a lovely series about magicians in 1890s London), and your channel has answered quite a few of my questions about things she describes. Not just what the characters might wear but some of the more "ordinary" aspects of life back then. Like laundry!!! I absolutely agree that it's incredibly important to pull from many disciplines for creative projects. I've gone and learned some engineering basics (VERY basic!) in order to more thoroughly world-build for my own fantasy novel, just as an example. The world isn't made of just one thing or another, and there's no such thing as wasted learning. Ever.

Bernadette, I just want to say thank you for getting me interested in sewing and fashion history and all this. Your videos really have changed the way I view clothing and the fashion industry, and my personal style as well. I feel so much more comfortable in my body when wearing flowy skirts and a corset than I do wearing jeans and a tshirt most days and it's really because of you. Your deep dives into historical and modern fashion are some of the most entertaining and educational videos I've watched. Thank you for doing this so much ❤

@@madisonoberg4513 Not terribly long after she moved to London. I personally think it looks much healthier now and it's still long enough to do the historical-ish styles.

And they are entranced by the big pockets these clothes have!
The interdisciplinary concept you mentioned is exactly what I’m doing in my Honors College program right now! One of my professors said it this way: “all of the easy problems have been solved already, all that’s left is the complicated ones that require you to think across fields”. Being a Chemistry major myself, it’s always useful to me to change how I think about concepts, and I’ve found there is overlap between the construction of garments and the synthesis of molecules, and that allows me to think differently about my discipline. I also agree that we shouldn’t forget and disregard historical knowledge simply because we live in the “modern era”. There’s always a way to use old information in new ways.
I know very little about drafting and development in creating a outfit....you not only give me a wonderful history and thoughts, is what makes me watch your videos, it's relaxing your voice, and I love how you show tricks that help in creating. I'm trying to figure out what makes me watch your videos and it's I figure your personality that keeps me coming back. Who else can lay on her work floor and talk indepth about history and the development of design. You give credit which is always an honable talent and you share others views. This is probably a muck up but in short, your videos are awesome. Thank you
Loved the use of gaff tape for the stays. I have a roll that I carefully use from back in my theatre nerd days, and it has occurred to me recently that my budget can definitely handle purchasing a new roll, so I think I'm definitely going to try your method next time I do a stays mock-up.
Even though I'm not artistically inclined I found this video showing your process absolutely *fascinating*. Watching you work with Milanote allowed me to see an artist's brain at work. I'm inspired! As always, your presentation was interesting, intriguing, perfect!! ❤
Miss Banner, you have an insane and incredible talent for posting videos of a new project JUST as I am starting or have started making something similar. Literally two days ago I was going through youtube videos of people making stays, and finding myself wishing that you had a video of making some. I find it so useful to see someone go through the process of making and handling a garment, to help visualize flat patterns. I start making a pirate shirt - you make one. I want to make a black pirate shirt with a few more frills - you do exactly that. I start modifying a jacket - you post a video about making a jacket containing exactly the solution I was missing. I get given a treadle machine - you post a video about treadle machines! It's a beautiful set of coincidences and I hope they keep happening. Excited for this gorgeous project!!
Milanote looks PERFECT for what I need. I've done sewing projects in the past but I'm about to embark on an extravagant dress and this looks like a fabulous way to keep the whole thing organized
As a burgeoning historical and modern seamstress, you have no idea how much I think I will actually appreciate milanote. I have bene trying so many different organizational software to try to build my designs, with no luck. I am definitely going to give milanote a try. Do you have any videos on your other creatice processes?
Thank you Miss Bernadette B. Thank you for this look behind the creative process and the academic structure that supports and informs it. And especially thank you to the little elves who kept putting your hair up or taking it down.
I love love love watching you build patterns and try out things. It's really inspiring! I made my winter coat using your cape pattern and I get so many compliments :)
😱First NerdForge using Mila Note, now Miss Banner.?? 😆AAAAHH!! Think I'm gonna have a look & probably download it this time around.. If my wandering mind doesn't get distracted like before😂
I am so excited for this project and I really love being able to see your process from start to finish. It's really satisfying seeing a project through from concept to completion
i'm so excited to see how it turns out. the blending of modern and historical inspo and techniques got my little brain whirring imagining all of the possibilities...i am now thinking about the endless ways I could blend modern Irish dance dresses with traditional ones, and add historical and fantastical elements...it'll probably be years til I have the skill and time though lol
Interdisciplinary skills are fantastic. My degree was for Art, as in drawing and painting. While working on that degree, I was lucky enough to do some art modeling. It honestly really helped my own artwork; you gain such insight into position and form while trying to hold even the simplest of poses, and it definitely translated into my own work. And the art has happily merged in with the stitching as well. I'm still working on getting a good basic series of drafting bits down, and it feels good to know that I am still learning things while I go on the journey. I can apply things learned from my art classes (colour, how a design might flow, what's going to draw the eye the most) to my garment making as well as any mending or embellishing I do to any garments I own.
I absolutely loved this video! I so enjoy watching you create. I enjoyed hearing your philosophy on taking advantage of, learning, knowing as much as possible, from all the knowledge of the past. You said it so eloquently! It is important that we remember, use and explore the past and all it has taught us. This is true in just about anything that we do. Learning from our past is vital. I can't wait to see the rest of this. It is exciting to imagine what you will do with that "mood board! All the best to you, Audri
Wow, thanks for Milanote. I love how I can use it both on my laptop and phone, and it syncs together. It's going to be great for organizing my endless ideas and plans.
yes for historic clothing! I'd add that if you wanna be an concept artist, character designer or illustrator it will vastly enrich your understanding of how to draw... ALL clothing really, if you understand how historical clothes worked and why they look like they do. (and anything you draw with period piece influence will just look better) The bit at the end. The rug.
This is something of an aside to the as-usual beautifully produced video about creative process and sewing, but did anyone else think at the start, wow, Bernadette looks stunning? And I mean that in that very particular way of, my goodness, people look absolutely radiant when they gain confidence and grow into being loudly, vibrantly (or quietly, neatly, if that is your personal vibe) *themselves*. I've been subscribed to Bernadette since that very first medieval dress video, and it's been so wonderful to see the journey so far. Also - wow, I sure have been needing something like milanote in my life! It's surprisingly hard to find an app that fluently combines pictures and text and handwriting/sketching.
So excited for the video! First I want to say that your hair looks amazing. So fluffy and swoopy. So far I've liked all your styles in general though. So fun and inspiring to see what other people do, pick something from everyone and add my own twists. Now let's go creativity!
This video really spoke to me :D I often find that the best part of my art projects is doing the research. For my current art project "Olympian Archetypes" I have spent a full year (perhaps more...) reading academic articles from archaeologist, anthropologists, material engineers and artists, to gather all the info I needed about the Greek Gods and the Greek savoir-faire encapsulated in their crafts (from weaving to goldsmithing, passing through pottery, musical instruments and metalwork in general). Studying the pictures of what has been found in archaeological digs and trying to see imprints of those techniques that I could replicate in my haphazard ways of cosplaying/crafting. Thankfully the final objects need to "just" look the part to as fine a detail as I can master when dealing with so many items. I really appreciate your attention to detail and explanation of how all this work, inspiration isn't just an anvil that gets dropped on our heads. :D
i'm a little late to this video, but hearing you talk about how important the study of historical textiles remains is really invigorating for me right now. i'm just ten weeks out from completing my undergraduate degree in art history, and submitted my applications for grad school this past week, with the intent to study textiles and design history. it's costubers like you (and many others who would take too long to name!) who gave me an outlet for my interesting in dress and textiles, and now it feels so full circle that i'm becoming someone with a modicum of expertise on the topic
Ms. B, I always love your videos. You have gained so many skills since I began watching your work; it's really awesome. I always learn interesting things from watching your channel, so thanks for the research you put into it. You are so right about needing to learn about the past, as well as recognizing how important it is to work with other disciplines. Please keep up the excellent work, and thanks to Dani and Heathcliff too.
As a PhD student in my last year of PhD studies and a mathematician, I find the idea that academia and creativity are separate honestly ridiculous and baffling. Without creativity, there would be next to no advance in research and academia. The dress design looks gorgeous, as usual!
Just in life in general you use so many different disciplines. I crochet as my hobby and for relaxation but it also uses alot of math skills. Then there is learning a whole new language that helps when reading the written pattern. I cant wait to see the creation you come up with
The mention that the gold printed chiffon is a navy blue base lit a lightbulb in my head, like "OH THAT'S WHY I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS SO MUCH! I adore how cool and shadowy and almost icy the brassy gold looks, it's such an incredible golden moon -lit night vibe" :D ...and then immediately an explanation follows on how the copper lamé was meant to hopefully counteract that cool cast. 😭 Such are the intricacies of personal taste - and a slighty warmer tone admittedly serves the more autumnal lean of the theming better (and arguably also compliment's Bernadette's natural colouration more)
I am really intrigued with Milanote - will check it out. I love the process. You really have helped me gather myself, breathe and stop being scattered and therefore frozen and not doing the things I want to create. So, thank you.
WAit, is this space you are in a studio and not your home? Great. I have missed way too many of your vlogs, apologies. Life has been crazy. Thank you for keeping the great work coming.
Loving the shorter format. ❤ I can absorb one section of the creation/method at a time. Not delay watching for when I have more time. Search through more easily. And not give away my whole day to enjoy it. 🎉
Yay! A new Bernadette vid! Lol! You are one of the first five creators I subbed to when I finally gave in and downloaded the app six-ish years ago. 😂🖤👾
Thank you very much for this video, it was inkredibly useful and inspiring for me. Currently I work on a draft for my final work in fashion collage and I chose medieval fasion interpretation as my base line. I relly like the visiuals of this period, but I felt so lost for past months, my professors were absolutelly no help. But thanks to you, I feel like I might understand that I sould do way better.💚

I literally started quoting “I will see you anon” and then I was thrown for a non historical loop!
Can’t wait to see the progress on this!
Even though I'm not artistically inclined I found this video showing your process absolutely *fascinating*. Watching you work with Milanote allowed me to see an artist's brain at work. I'm inspired! As always, your presentation was interesting, intriguing, perfect!! ❤
Thanks!
"Because...interdisciplinary stuff...reasons" 😂 Relating so deeply. And super excited to see the final dress 😍
I love the phrasing "Dumpster Stays", made my day lol
Hi, Bernadette, my mom does the same thing. She first chooses a good fabric, I chalk out a design and then she hand stitches it up!
You gave me back the joy of sewing. Thank you sooo much 🪡🧵☺️
Miss Banner, you have an insane and incredible talent for posting videos of a new project JUST as I am starting or have started making something similar.
I don't believe in coincidence. The Universe is aligning for you through Bernadette's work. Enjoy it.
I did lately modern ballgown for my hospital 15 anniversary using techniques I used in my 19th century dresses. I have so much fun!
This is art practice in context 👌🏻 being able to take seemingly disparate ideas and pin them together in to a cohesive visual story… or dress
Milanote looks PERFECT for what I need. I've done sewing projects in the past but I'm about to embark on an extravagant dress and this looks like a fabulous way to keep the whole thing organized
I am absolutely in agreement with you about how important it is to preserve historical methods of all kinds. Great video!
The way you create patterns and dresses, and videos, is so visually interesting and so satisfying to watch. Thank you
As a burgeoning historical and modern seamstress, you have no idea how much I think I will actually appreciate milanote. I have bene trying so many different organizational software to try to build my designs, with no luck. I am definitely going to give milanote a try. Do you have any videos on your other creatice processes?
Thank you Miss Bernadette B. Thank you for this look behind the creative process and the academic structure that supports and informs it. And especially thank you to the little elves who kept putting your hair up or taking it down.
the sketch looks awesome, cant wait to see how this turns out ❤
YES please turn this project into a UA-cam series.
Carpet roll at the end 😂
Yes but my first thought was sneeze! Because of the dust and smell of dog pee, which is why I don't have carpets anymore
I'm watching Bernadette sketch and paint...and now I'm hearing the Queen of the Night's aria from "The Magic Flute" in my head.
im glad i wasnt the only one getting queen of the night vibes
Damrau´s performance, specifically, yas!
I was just thinking that as well!! Especially with that makeup and the "horns"!
I love love love watching you build patterns and try out things. It's really inspiring! I made my winter coat using your cape pattern and I get so many compliments :)
I loved watching more of your brainstorm process!
What am amazing work of engineering art that Corset is!!! 💕 I wish I had even half of your talent, Bernadette =)
😱First NerdForge using Mila Note, now Miss Banner.?? 😆AAAAHH!! Think I'm gonna have a look & probably download it this time around.. If my wandering mind doesn't get distracted like before😂
listening to Bernadette raving while in her creative zone, i could just about fall in love
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?
I'm really excited to see the garment done! The idea of a Harvest Moon Goddess is intriguing.
All the best to you,
Audri
Wow, thanks for Milanote. I love how I can use it both on my laptop and phone, and it syncs together. It's going to be great for organizing my endless ideas and plans.
Thanks
yes for historic clothing! I'd add that if you wanna be an concept artist, character designer or illustrator it will vastly enrich your understanding of how to draw... ALL clothing really, if you understand how historical clothes worked and why they look like they do. (and anything you draw with period piece influence will just look better)
The bit at the end.
Hair down, hair up, hair down, hair up, hair down…I’m dizzy! Can’t wait to see the finished gown, I know it will be beautiful ❤
The taped corset is such a LOOK! When I get through my (checks milanote) other 26 projects that one is next. Thank you for the inspiration!
Can’t wait for the next steps!!!
A new Bernadette video as I work on a new crochet pattern? What a lovely start to my Saturday 🥰
I love these videos so much cuz I always leave feeling like I’ve watched a documentary❤
Just in life in general you use so many different disciplines. I crochet as my hobby and for relaxation but it also uses alot of math skills. Then there is learning a whole new language that helps when reading the written pattern. I cant wait to see the creation you come up with
4:40 gurgle pot!!!!! one of my favorite things ever 10/10 recommend
Thanks for Milanote. I am going to spread the word to my genealogy groups.
Great project start video Bernadette. Looking forward to seeing dress come together; also if you get more communal desserts.
thank you so much for the video bernadette! im in recovery from top surgery and you've cheered me up very much
I love Milanote! The free-placing and nesting aspectects are my favorite.
The mention that the gold printed chiffon is a navy blue base lit a lightbulb in my head, like "OH THAT'S WHY I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS SO MUCH! I adore how cool and shadowy and almost icy the brassy gold looks, it's such an incredible golden moon -lit night vibe" :D
...and then immediately an explanation follows on how the copper lamé was meant to hopefully counteract that cool cast. 😭 Such are the intricacies of personal taste - and a slighty warmer tone admittedly serves the more autumnal lean of the theming better (and arguably also compliment's Bernadette's natural colouration more)
The construction of this is so cool. I’m really excited to see how it turns out ❤
I am really intrigued with Milanote - will check it out.
Oh yes! I’ll be checking in regularly for that follow up video…I want to see the Harvest Queen in all her golden glory ❤
Loving the shorter format. ❤ I can absorb one section of the creation/method at a time. Not delay watching for when I have more time. Search through more easily. And not give away my whole day to enjoy it. 🎉
Thank you! I have never liked the idea of choosing between intellect and creativity. They ought not to be opposed.
Yay! A new Bernadette vid! Lol! You are one of the first five creators I subbed to when I finally gave in and downloaded the app six-ish years ago. 😂🖤👾
Great to see the process for this, love the inspo board
So Happy
Thank you very much for this video, it was inkredibly useful and inspiring for me. Currently I work on a draft for my final work in fashion collage and I chose medieval fasion interpretation as my base line. I relly like the visiuals of this period, but I felt so lost for past months, my professors were absolutelly no help. But thanks to you, I feel like I might understand that I sould do way better.💚
I do miss the longer videos, but I'm so glad we're starting a new project series!
Very well done, thank you Bernadette!
I’m using Milanote myself. My first project is my huge staff that I’m almost done making. Just need the stain and clear coat
