I remember being a kid and loving these themes. The caste wall pricks definitely had their use when setting up castles and tree hideouts.
The cowboy theme took use of the wall pieces too.
And I remember it well - even as a kid I recognised quality, and it made me stop buying LEGO for 10 years when the enter the simplified City and "action figure" phase.

6024 was the only set from this subtheme I owned as a kid. We found it on clearance at KB Toys (they were very bad about moving their LEGO inventory out, so you could find older sets there often). The set had been opened and was missing the green plate. When I got home I used another plate to build the set on.
Years later as an adult collector, I never thought I'd own the other two sets, but through some kind of miracle I've managed to add them to my collection.

Awesome story! Very similar with us we got it at sears as kids back in the day and then on ebay were able to get the 2 big sets for somewhat of a "deal"

Gem piece was released in 1998 according to Bricklink. I don't remember them from my childhood

I feel Robin really let himself go in the dark forest with his tattered clothes and unkempt facial hair. Fortunately, once he got himself of the 'shrooms he became tidy again, just in time for the 90th anniversary Lion Castle.

Everytime I see or read something about the "dark forest" theme I wonder why I got all 3 of them as a kid and still got them.
I'm from Germany and we live in a small village - bigger cities are far away and I don't know how my parents manage to get these sets, when they are only released in north america? 🤔
-> it scared me a bit when I saw that my children are playing with a set which is nowadays traded as used for more then 500 Euro 😳
    (the dark forest fortress)
A small modification of the ambush is, that I used a 1x1 tile with clip on top and a big limb element to "hide" the ladder. 😉

Cool story!! Yeah don't let them scratch the minifigures or baseplate 😃

IIRC, those sets were available in Germany as well, but they were exclusive to Vedes shops. I swear I remember them from their catalogue.
