    Chris seems like a genuinely good person and appears to be very humble, which is what matters most. However, apart from a few photos I found on his website, the rest of the pictures, especially in this episode, are really unimpressive. I believe that this type of street photography that Chris, Trevor Wisecup, and many other New York photographers engage in is just a mere imitation of what Daniel Arnold does.
    These crazy/decisive/surreal moments or whatever you wanna call it, after a while eventually becomes a mechanical exercise in itself.
    It's cool to have a portfolio full of photos like these but if we have to be objective, 90% of this stuff is mediocre at best.
    Hope people won't take me as a hater because I'm not, I'm just expressing my subjective opinion respectfully. Great series though!

      Agree, most of these photos don't stand out at all. The people are ordinary, don't look unique, they aren't doing anything interesting. And the composition in them isn't that great either. Also doesn't help that some of these photos look very grainy, which appears to happen when shooting with film at the wrong settings? Also doesn't make sense to me to use a flash while in the daytime?
      In my street photography, I always try to photography people who are doing something interesting, who stand out in how they look, or shoot an interesting spot, trying to keep composition in mind. Yet many street photographers whose photos are very ordinary get attention or are featured in videos such as this, while others get ignored when they are doing good work.

      Honestly I agree. I really hate to sound like a hater but these photos our out of focus and the the colors look so depressing and dull. Same with Trevor I really don't get it. There are way better NY photographers who have a similar style.

      You have to understand how hard it is to get really great street photographs. There is only one Daniel Arnold, but Daniel has said many times that he typically shoots at least 5 rolls of film EVERY DAY, which is insanely prolific. However, go re-watch Daniel's ep in this series, and you'll see that he takes a bunch of meh photos during that photo walk as well, save for the very end when that mysterious lady in the black hat emerges and positions herself right in front of Daniel. This is just to say that even for the most talented photographers in this genre, it is still largely a numbers game. Robert Frank took like 20,000 photos for The Americans. Any honest street photographer will tell you that 99% of what they shoot is garbage, give or take.

      @@HeavehBurtation definitely is a numbers game, I'm on the streets most days myself, so I get it. But this is not good.

  • @benbowland

    Honestly this guy's photos are really subpar. The compositions, if you could call them that, are dull and lacking in focus. The negatives are treated poorly and are either washed out or overly grainy in an inconsistent manner. They aren't even technically sound, and their imperfections don't add any artistic merit like they do in, for example, Daido Moriyama's work. I was recommended this channel by another video as an example of high quality photography content and I'm pretty disappointed. Not referring to the producer of the video but rather the photographer.

    • @marioarias9942

      Daido Moriyama uses digital and uses his camera like a video taking many shots to keep one I like his final result but he’s also kind of a cheat.

    Maybe it wasn't really that way, but this comes across a bit sneery and lacking in empathy. By his account, he got the shot, and then decided to push his luck with another, making it more obvious he was specifically targeting them. Whatever his personal opinion on different people, and whatever the motivation to capture reality, in all it's forms, if you're taking photos of people to mock them, rather than out of genuine curiosity and empathy, they are probably going to pick up on the that negative energy. I'm a little tired of how media has made people so polarised, and how people seem to think they're on a 'side' rather than recognising how institutions of power are self serving and don't give a fuck about any of us. He may well think he's entitled to mock these "bros", but he probably has more in common with them than whichever journalist or politician he aligns with that looks down on Trump supporters.
    Maybe I'm way out of line, and maybe that's not his nature at all, but taking pictures to laugh at people, rather than laugh with them about how absurd life is seems like an utter waste of time. To then try and avoid the situation rather than be responsible is equally unfortunate to see. Sure the cops are annoying, and it's moronic to be suspicious of someone as a terrorist for taking photos on the street, but he created that whole situation with his own attitude. But I guess maybe this was back when the FBI were lying about Trump, and perhaps now he's recognised all the bullshit from various different media mouthpieces show how we can't trust any political figures or their supposed motives, except the very few outliers, largely dismissed for speaking the truth.
    There's a line I remember from John Free, and he was talking about how he (and by extension his audience) are capturing moments for the benefit of mankind, to show the beauty of humanity. And obviously he talks about the fear and self consciousness of novice photographers might feel. And he says if the people you are taking photos of knew your true intentions, they would hug you with gratitude.

      @@christopherscottcarpenter It's journalistic by nature, nice try though. He literally antagonized people with the intention of getting a certain type of image & paint a narrative. I am a street photographer as well & the largest body of work I have is from protests. Right, Left, doesn't matter I shoot objectively. There is no right or wrong way to do street photography, however I am entitled to my opinion just like he is entitled to his. This is a social outlet & a community I am a part of so I'll continue to share my opinion. If anyone was displaying a victim mentality it was the photographer.

    • @christopherscottcarpenter

      @@michaelforbes4069 your comment makes no sense. Why is it journalistic by nature? It isn't, in as much as prose can be fiction or factual. Photography is a medium to varying degrees of subjectivity. I think you're just upset that people with similar political and social views as you are routinely portrayed as villains in cultural discourse. And as for opinions - I'm doing the same thing, pal. We're all entitled to our opinions, and I think yours is bunkum.

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 Рік тому +1

      @@christopherscottcarpenter To me the whole encounter comes across as very cynical. Sure, we can all have opinions [even though it's mostly bullshit from the media used to polarise and distract the public and keep them from asking real questions] but why bring that cynicism into your work? Why not work with empathy and curiosity, and let others surprise you? It seems a waste of time to be looking for subjects to mock. I wouldn't even say it looks like a particularly significant or compelling image to create such a fuss for. More like a rather one sided anecdote that isn't that interesting.

    • @christopherscottcarpenter
      @christopherscottcarpenter Рік тому +1

      Because as a photographer and artist he can imbue his work with whatever he wants. It’s only interpreted as “cynical” by people who through either ignorance or malice have aligned themselves to the receiving end of Voss’s provocations - maybe he earnestly uses photography as a means of pushing back against the rising trend of proto-fascism that dweebs like those in the MAGA hats are complicit in.

      The only way to ensure that you NEVER get into a confrontation as a street photographer is to stop being a street photographer right now. Every prolific street photographer will get into at least one confrontation. What you do WHEN that inevitably happens is up to you.
