    Chris is a real genuine guy. Was great to meet him in person and chat. Glad you did this with him. With everyone tbh cause you're really preserving the history of NYC street photography by doing these interviews. 🍻

    He appears to me to be an introvert who is using photography to force himself to be different. I am a street photographer in Barcelona who just loves the whole process of getting good exercise as I walk for 6 hours or so and aim my camera at anything that I think is interesting to me. I don't care what other people think of my photos although it's nice that some observers of my photos give me great compliments. However, that is not at all the motivation that keeps me going out every few days for a 6 hour walk aiming my camera and trying to capture interesting images with it. The more photos I take on a trip, the more photos I can choose from that I like and willing to show other people. I think of photography as a recording of my life journey that when I look at some of them years later, I can bring back the memory of taking that photo in that moment.

    Something I’ve always wondered, do street photographers on nyc and people you’ve had on this channel, do they have other jobs other than photography? If so is it related to photography and art? Or for some of them is street photography more of a hobby/side gig?

    • @BradHolkesvig
      @BradHolkesvig 2 роки тому +7

      I'm a street photographer in Barcelona where I live with my Spanish fiancee'. Each one of us photographers have different reasons why we do this but the main reason is that we have this strong desire to aim cameras at what we think are interesting images that we observe. Otherwise we wouldn't be doing it. With that strong desire, we come up with other reasons so for me, it's like a recording of my journey that is meant only for me because no one is with me while I'm walking around taking pictures. I can look at photos from 20 years ago and it helps me remember those times I saw those images that I captured. I have trouble recalling most life experiences of the past so photography is a great way to record some moments of my past life.
      Other street photographers end up teaching photography or produce a photo book and try sell them for money. Some street photographers might be perverts who secretly take photos of any human bodies that they find sexually exciting which is probably what many street photographers are into. I'm only giving you some knowledge about being a street photographer and the different reasons that go along with our desire to do it.

      I used to live in New York. Was living in Florida and hated it. Wound up living in Seattle. I miss New York. Like a salmon I return to New York. Usually in the middle of September. This year it’ll be midOctober.
      I work for a living. As a result I don’t walk the streets nearly enough. Will retire soon and my new job will be taking pics on the street. What kind of gig can you get, other than some other form of photography, to support your street addiction? Is there a 12 program for recovering street photographers?

    That’s interesting because I think if you live in a small town or city and try to do street photography that’s more practice or like a drill. It’s more difficult. I feel like that would be training harder for the game. The game being NY. Small towns n cities are a lil more difficult to shoot in my opinion. Far less “moments” to capture. For fresh eyes New York is like a kid in a candy store.

    After watching alot of street photographers, this dude seems pretty real and sincere. I find some photographers can be really pretentious and sniff their own farts. And people only like their work cus they hype it up so much, when its avarage. Nice work dude

    I can respect him for saying theres more to NY street photography. I still believe NY is the undisputed king of street because that's where it all started. Tokyo would be the same thing if only a plane ticket to Japan was cheap and there were no Visa headaches. I love taking pictures in my hometown, but NY has a variety of unpredictable moments to photograph, everyone's photos never look the same.

      Most don’t make a living with street photography, not directly. Some do commercial photography work (weddings, portraits) ad agency gigs, magazine gigs or workshops. There’s print sales and UA-cam and other social media. Usually, it’s a combination of all the above. Most have regular jobs and they do street photography on the side. I don’t know of anyone who makes their living solely through street photography

      idk having the cross comparison of "the kiss" being non consensual and just taking photos of people without consent is kinda a stretch
      While one is protected by law, the other really isn't especially by todays standards

    Chris is so right about NYC being "practice." I've always felt the same. I tried making street work here (nyc) but it's always felt like it's been done. I never felt like I was getting at my vision or relationship with the city. Making work elsewhere is much better. If you are not from New York City and want to photograph street, please do so. We don't really need any more city street photographers.
