Remember the video DD Speed Shop he ran over the creeper and the flex plate grounded all up bent the flexplate starter has not worked properly every sense
That car is going to be a great learning tool for you. We all learn from our mistakes. I'm 66 and I've been turning wrenches on cars since I was a kid. I also spent a long career (over 30 years) in the USAF. A lot of that time, as an aircraft mechanic on F-16's and several other types. One thing I learned is, when you complete a task go back and look over your work. Check everything you reassembled, make sure everything is properly tightened and there is no interference. Even the most experienced technician can make a mistake. In the USAF we had to have a second experienced tech look over the job and sign off on it. When wrenching on cars we don't always have that luxury. I look forward to seeing Bisquick on the road soon!
Been there done that, toasted All the wiring under the dash if a 59 Chevy truck when I was 19. Rewired it with all green wire and masking tape labels 🤣
If I remember correctly, the remans used to have a little pin that you used to set the shim gap you need to have it correct. Take a step back, double check your connections. Use a PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY, NOT the battery charger. Use the Fusible Links! Also, find the casting numbers on the block & get a real Chevy starter for that year truck.
Dan gave this car plus cash and if the kid can't figure out a starter and ignition switch then why am I watching. Its been months and can't get the easiest motor in the world to run.
Well, bench testing starter is first after a repair. Shimming aftermarket starter is common. But from day one the flywheel was likely junk. Dan had trouble from day one with it. Something is up with timing, firing order or ignition module. Hope you get it sorted out
New starter and flex plate. Pull the number one plug, get it to top dead center, recheck the timing and firing order. A little dash fire isn't the end of the world. You learned something so it's a win either way. Good job young man, stay with it and you WILL get it right.
You guys need to get the number one cylinder up on TDC compression stroke pull distributor cap off and see where the rotary cap is pointing then rewire it from that point with your number one spark plug wire and it should quit backfiring if it continues to do it something's wrong with the carburetor.
You gotta' get DD outta' the car and it'll run. Just a starter, correct flywheel, selinoid wire and it'll start!!!!!..............sorry your having the trouble. And Remember ,,,,it's only bolts and nuts..........😎😎
Pull that transmission , find a good flywheel(flexplate) install a good oem starter !!! Pull #1 plug get TDC set distributor back in make sure all wires are good and correct firing order is wired !!! So your lookin at a few hundred bucks , and since your in school it'll be a bit till you can afford it !!! I'll be waitin to watch your struggles !!! You'll get it !!! You're just gonna have to get a few parts !!! Good luck , Be waitin !!!
First thing that I think that should be done is pull the engine apart enough to remove the cam shaft and inspect the lobes, make sure it's not going round. Make sure the timing marks on the timing gears.are.lined up properly. And lastly make sure the distributor is installed on the number 1 on the compression stroke. Basically Un DD Speed Shop it.
Hang in there, you got some stuff to fix but it will be worth it in the end. I would honestly toss the starter and replace the flexplate. Look at getting that car set TDC and start fresh. Go over all your plug wires, look for any burn marks. It appeared at least one of the plug wires was sitting on the header so god only knows how long that’s been like that.
Get late 90s factory gm truck mini starter. Also get rid of that jumper wire for the neutral safety switch and get you a new neutral safety switch. Stop wasting your money rebuilding the starter you have. It’s aftermarket junk. Start cleaning up that wiring too.
You need to look up on how to shim a starter. All you need is a drill bit can’t remember the size. All your doing is making mor work for your self. Work smarter not harder.
You'll get there young man. Knowledge comes from one's mistakes. You learn not to repeat them, or at least me hope so. lol If you haven't figured your starter problem out yet, you need to figure out which flywheel you have. 153 or 168 tooth flywheel. The 153 isn't as common as the 168 is. From there you will be able to get the correct starter. The 153 were used mainly in the late 70's and thru the mid 80's. #05's usually had them, but you can use it on most any small block. The wiring back in 66 was very basic. Just follow the source of power and you'll find any shorts. Think of electricity like water. It'll take its path of least resistance and leak if you will. I hope you figure it out and this rambling makes some sort of since.
As far as the starter goes, you need to put power to the solenoid only and see how it is engaging into the flywheel to see if you need to shim it one way or the other. Sounds like the bendix is bad or isn't engaging the fly wheel properly. Could have some bad teeth in the flywheel... You should never have a electrical fire unless the hot wires are shorted out!
Our need to get a new starter and fly wheel , or your problems will continue also check your starter pinion saft clearance with a 1/8 inch Allen wrench. Remember you can't use 350 starter or flywheel on a 400 . They are different. Find out exactly what engine block you have also some years of Chevrolet it mattered if you have manual or automatic transmission. To many people think all small block Chevrolet is the same. Although some early models were different but similar.
Have you gotten the correct knurled starter bolts that properly align the starter to the flywheel/flexplate? Check the 18436572 firing order too. 1357 on the driver side, 2468 on the passenger side.
Its out of time... or a sparkplug wire is crossed on the firing order. A valve or valves might be to tight, hope not! Ot looks like you have an electrical problem in the wiring...
The reason the car caught on fire is because of the heck that you got it from he has no clue how to fix things right DD hack shop that car ain't free to you it's going to cost you more to fix it then it's worth sorry Jack
I mean seriously, it was a free car. What do you expect from a free classic car? Not only that but he did end up giving the kid cash when he came to get the car!
That's HOT RODIN. Baby steps bro, to move a mile you have to take a step.
THE FLEX PLATE IS BENT
Remember the video DD Speed Shop he ran over the creeper and the flex plate grounded all up bent the flexplate starter has not worked properly every sense
Hmm, did not know that, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Thank you and thank you for your service.
Oh man, rewiring sucks but we all have those days where just can't do anything right. Take a deep breath and dig in. 🤙
Get the proper starter for the car
Everything I know, I learned by doing it wrong. Just keep trying and you WILL succeed! Hang in there. Thanks for sharing! It’s still a cool car! ❤️😎
Thanks man
Been there done that, toasted All the wiring under the dash if a 59 Chevy truck when I was 19. Rewired it with all green wire and masking tape labels 🤣
Ha ha, it is just one those thing
92 Chevy s0 ith a 4.3 comes with a factory mini starter
not surprised,,the 57 chevy he gave away was cursed too,,,he's not a very thorough mechanic.(DD that is)
If I remember correctly, the remans used to have a little pin that you used to set the shim gap you need to have it correct. Take a step back, double check your connections. Good car to learn on. Hi from Australia.
Hi from America
Dan gave this car plus cash and if the kid can't figure out a starter and ignition switch then why am I watching. Its been months and can't get the easiest motor in the world to run.
Well, bench testing starter is first after a repair. Shimming aftermarket starter is common. But from day one the flywheel was likely junk. Dan had trouble from day one with it.

I hope so too.
New starter and flex plate. Pull the number one plug, get it to top dead center, recheck the timing and firing order.

That poor car has had its share of bad luck.......hope it turns around soon.......
I do too
The flex plate is bent.
Those power master starters never line up right.
When all else fails, try, try, try again! Good luck Jack! ✌️😎🏁
I am trying
It’s a 56 year old car. A new painless wire harness is probably a good idea
That is true
You guys need to get the number one cylinder up on TDC compression stroke pull distributor cap off and see where the rotary cap is pointing then rewire it from that point with your number one spark plug wire and it should quit backfiring if it continues to do it something's wrong with the carburetor.
I will try that
Sometimes it's best to just go back to step one. Even if you already did more than once it is , if nothing else, a way to put your head back on track.
Use a 1/8 drill bit in between your starter gear and the flex plate. That's your clearance that you need
I normally use welding wire
You have to get it wrong before you get it right, so now you know what not to do....keep tryin!
You gotta' get DD outta' the car and it'll run. Just a starter, correct flywheel, selinoid wire and it'll start!!!!!..............sorry your having the trouble. And Remember ,,,,it's only bolts and nuts..........😎😎

The power master starters I know of worked perfect without shimming them on a small block chevy...

Those power master starters never line up right. Get a vortech style starter which is cheap available at every parts store and a mini starter..
Check your plug wires and timing
You need to look up on how to shim a starter. All you need is a drill bit can’t remember the size. All your doing is making mor work for your self. Work smarter not harder.
The starter is not shimmed properly the plug your bypassing is the neutral saftey switch.
You'll get there young man. Knowledge comes from one's mistakes. You learn not to repeat them, or at least me hope so. lol

I think you need to put a new flywheel in the car or flex plate they call them nowadays
Flywheel is manual tranny; flexplate is automatic.
You got this dude, keep at it.
On good note it's not crispy done yet and all projects gets tiny bugs you can fixer up
I think that car is a jinx
Why?
@@scottiehunnybunnywoowoo462 because all the trouble that they are having with it
I think so too, but I will get it to work soon
Don't blame everything on Dan that car was junk when Dan got it
Leave the key in
.......your making it difficult
Just to get the terminology correct; automatic transmissions use a “flexplate.” Manual transmissions use a “flywheel.”
Our need to get a new starter and fly wheel , or your problems will continue also check your starter pinion saft clearance with a 1/8 inch Allen wrench. Remember you can't use 350 starter or flywheel on a 400 . They are different. Its out of time... or a sparkplug wire is crossed on the firing order. A valve or valves might be to tight, hope not! Ot looks like you have an electrical problem in the wiring...
Why not just put a new flexplate and starter on it and be done
Get a new OEM starter and get some help with the timing. Quit fooling with aftermarket junk
A I BELIVE GIVE ONE A CHANCE NOW YOUR OUT
hi bob from pa i still have the 84 vette i,ll trade you
Uep
You should be pulling everything out and start over with new shit. American oem ditch the Canadian shit.
The reason the car caught on fire is because of the heck that you got it from he has no clue how to fix things right DD hack shop that car ain't free to you it's going to cost you more to fix it then it's worth sorry Jack
Well said
I mean seriously, it was a free car. What do you expect from a free classic car? Not only that but he did end up giving the kid cash when he came to get the car!
It was a free car . DD speed shop showed everything. Nothing in this world is really free.
But it was a free car . Dan made no bones about it be a cobble together car. So what's your issue ? Free car with issues .
Have you ever bought a project car before? That’s literally what this is….and Dan made it clear
Jack he jumped the neutral safety switch he's a hack
That’s what it looked like to me was the neutral safety. I would honestly toss that starter and get a new flexplate.
