I like that the focus is on a narrative. It doesn't matter that you may have not gone to college and nearly failed out of high school, you have a story to convey. You have skills and attributes to convey and your resume should do this. This is by far the best and most comprehensive video I've seen on the subject of writing resumes.
Dude, this video got me into 3 great job interviews, and i got one. I came back here to get anything i might have missed, coz i'm writing another resume for a different job now. Good stuff man, thanks for the great knowledge.
Ramit, you da man. I copied your resume almost to a T and landed a highly lucrative position at Google coasting off your vast accomplishments. Thanks!!!
I didn't even have to copy it, I just rubbed some Teige Hanley on it and BOOM!... Apple, Samsung, Exxon Mobile, Microsoft, Google all offered me to run their companies, aaand the Illuminati wanted me as their CEO of global domination. #AlphaM
I recently used the information Ramit gave us all in this video to write a resume for my friend. Thanks to Ramit's advice, she now works for the government and we've doubled her income.
Ramit...this is spot-on. My take-away is this...people do not want to be sold to...they want to be told a story, they want to be entertained, they want to gain some insight and maybe inspiration from. You try and sell someone they will reject you. If you, instead, entertain them via narrative they will enjoy it. They will remember it. Storytelling comes in many forms...and...our resume is just one of them. Thanks man...and your call to action at the end was seamless...you gave us something before you asked for something. Simon Sinek says "people dont buy what you do, they buy why you do what you do". They dont buy features and functions...make them feel something. That is what story does.
Omg!!!! This actually worked.. thanks man, for the last 4 years I attempted many times and handed out about 100 cvs and never got an interview... I used your guidelines and got one
Summarizes all of the advice I've ever read/heard about resumes in a precise, actionable way. Love the real life examples, not just, "Create a resume that leaves a lasting impression" or other generic crap people often say.
Learning to write concisely is a tough skill to learn! It's so much easier to just write out everything and it's what most of us do... "The things you take for granted are actually fascinating to other people". THIS IS GOLDEN. Once you realize this the possibilities are endless! This is the first video of yours I've watched and I'll definitely be watching more.
This is one of the best videos on the subject that I have seen. I believe the core reason is that he practices in his delivery what he tell us to do in our resume and that is to cut the fat, get to the point and lastly, make your words earn their place on your resume.
The first line on your resume in the education section really helped me put mine into perspective. Now my education looks more appealing and I now have the room to clarify what I'm actually learning at school. Thank you so much. I've been struggling with this for a year now and this video clarified my issues in 5 mins.
As usual, your free stuff beats most people's paid stuff. Loved the value here, and I loved that the "sell" was a simple URL at the end of the video. Classy move Ramit-love your work.
so much value in free material... totally shifts the paradigm on how to craft resumes. what struck me the most was making every word count into making a narrative so that it sticks!
I make my living by writing, and even though this video is geared to producing a great resume, the advice is probably the best I've heard or seen anywhere for writing in general. Every word has to earn its place in what you write, even if its just a text message.
I took at least 5 things from this video and highlighted notes on my new resume draft to add them in when I work on it and clean it up. This was super helpful and I really enjoyed how you explained in heavy detail WHY you should do something and what the hiring manager is thinking.
Damn this was a HUGE help. My only complaints about this video (although I gave it thumb's up which is rare) is that when the video shows your resume, the parts you're talking about are rarely highlighted, making the viewer's eyes look around the screen frantically as you're talking about a point they can't readily identify on the screen.
Ramit, thank you! Got a full 9 pages of notes out of this helpful video - will implement some serious changes to my resume and include the narrative for sure, I found this super important.
Very helpful, not only to just sell a resume. As long as you have a store of experiences to draw from you can craft your desired impression by choosing a narrative. "If you don't like the story you're in, leave". If you don't like the story you're in, (or life, or resume you have), then choose to tell a new one. Example: (example of a realistic event) 1. (Simple and realistic) A ceramic mug in the shape of a fox falls off a table after being bumped and spills water onto pink carpet. 2. (Creative and dynamic, with a crafted narrative) A ceramic mug, crafted in the shape of a sleeping fox, rests atop a table. A sudden force to the table tips the fox forward, sending it off the table and onto the floor. Crystalline drops cascade onto the carpet, spilling into and over each other, capturing in clusters on feathered hairs of lightly pink carpet. The fox's broken tail (her handle) rests beside her closed eyes. On her cheek, a wet tear glistens. Where the first option is fairly concrete, and relatively obvious, the second version takes a unique way of seeing the obvious, captures an underlying narrative and crafts a story to make the reader feel a certain way. I wrote this "narrative" with the idea of impressing on the reader a story relating to my favorite mug and that it almost has a personality, paired with the idea that the idea that beauty is fleeting. I captured the ephemeral beauty of the water on feathered floor, and drew from an experience as a child when I'd seen a young fox sleeping on feathered ferns in the forest. For creative twist/flair I added the tear and broken tail, reinforcing the ephemeral (and sadness) that comes with losing a great friend. I can come back and edit this "story" to more clearly show this narrative, but for purpose's sake I would like to say: Personify your resume. Is there a story you want to tell about yourself? We are often the stories we tell ourselves, but we can change who we are simply by the attitudes we tell ourselves (and others). What story is that? Tell it. Also: all of these things I am mentioning here Ramit kindly points out in his video. (*Note: Hard work is involved. If you're not willing to take the time and spend the effort to craft a story that makes you feel like the person you always wanted to be (or make others feel a certain way) then you might need to work a little harder or shift your focus to listen to that story you want to be told about you in order to get that dream job, or job in your mind. Only you can tell that story. Feel like you can't write a good enough resume because of a lack of experience? Find your story first, or some aspect of a story you wish to tell about yourself, and do little things that strengthen that story you want to tell (other jobs, favor for a friend, volunteer experience, online blogging, etc.). The more you do, the more you will amass experience necessary to craft a hard-earned resume. (Take a good look at your life and past experiences, including and excluding jobs, and you may be able to find a truth that you want to tell.) P.S. If you came this far, you have everything you need to craft your powerful resume (and/or story)!
this is one of the most helpful videos on youtube i put off making a resume as a sophomore in college because i felt underaccomplished but i had no idea how much of my own information could be stretched out and was relevant....THANK YOU!! hopefully i get an internship!
Hey there if you are looking to be outstanding at your workplace, I came across an interesting video for it ! Check it out! It can help you. ua-cam.com/video/FcdxEL9zTBA/v-deo.html
Thank you Ramit! I don't have as impressive qualifications or work experience as yourself however thanks to your advice on this video I was able to make every second at my previous employers and my one year and college look more bad ass then in my last Resume! I know I have more to work on though as its only been a few hours that I've worked on my Resume.
I had a psychology professor (not at Stanford) who taught me more about writing than any one ever. He had us write a weekly research paper review, then had us go back and rewrite the same review to one page. Then after everyone failed miserably like you described, he made us go back and rewrite the same review into 100 words or less. After the first few weeks, he made us do a one-page review on following writings every week, and a follow-up rewriting the previous week's writings down to 100 words. Result: Do that for an entire semester = strong ability to write a summary statement on a research paper. So I'm not demonstrating that skill here, but in a pinch, I can make anything fit a tweet and when I get desperate and NEED to say more, I cut it down to a tiny URL.
I'm glad to know I am not the only one who remembers Prof. McGinn's lectures :) His class, Ethics and Public Policy, changed my life. I knew what class you were talking about the moment you said you were assigned a 3 page response paper. I shared this video with Prof. McGinn. I hope you don't mind!
Lots of info crammed into a 15-min. video. I'm coming off of a stint as a stay-at-home mom and self-employed person. I have too much experience, but I believe I can craft my narrative and make it work. Been reading your book and making that work for me too. I need more cash to stash. ;) Thank you.
Ramit sir ..the info what you have provided for us is good .but not up to the point because as you are talented and wrote according to your achievements..but the thing is ..most of the people like us are not from such prestigious university's..and that too we are freshers with no work experience...so try to upload a video regarding resume for freshers..most of the people like me are waiting for your valuable suggestions ...
Susmitharoy Vatturi that's not the point. The point is that you want to craft a narrative. You want to paint a picture of yourself and who you are. Yes you might now have great achievements, but you have to work with what you got to paint a picture of you are. :)
What if you do not have anything? How do you build a great resume with no education and most work experience being from jobs like retail and delivering?
That's a good question. I think in order to write a great resume you first need a great curriculum. I organised two events for a couple of associations, participated at a couple of research projects, developed a website for a client by using Wordpress, etc. All these opportunities where from people who did not have many funds to pay me but where willing to accept my services because they were unable to afford a professional. They relied on me and I paid back their trust. Now I have relevant work experience. There are many associations willing to give you responsibilities in exchange of free work. I know, you would like to paid, and that is perfectly understandable. But in the current job market you may have to be willing to gain relevant work experience in order to land a good job. Next week I am having an interview with an important firm and that would be my dream job. Wish me luck! :)
Karina, you can craft a resume highlighting your excellent customer service skills, ability to meet sales goals, delivering on time, going the extra mile for a customer. Think bigger about who YOU are and don't limit yourself to your job title. To quantify, think of how many people you served in a day or a week in retail, or how many packages you delivered. Did you win any awards, employee of the month, etc.. ?
Hi Karina! I've worked with some recruiters and many times they would point out that they wished retail folks did not undersell themselves. As stated by someone else point out the number of people you worked with/ served/ number of deliveries. Accomplishments? Are you detail oriented and focused on the proper function of a small business or store? Feel free to reach out to me!
I love the professionalism of this video even the part where you say "I fucking hate budgeting" that is a nice touch Thumbs up for the great information
I know this is old, but damn! Thank you Ramit. You helped me to dig deeper into my history, and revealed and uncover very interesting facts about my experience that were just overlooked before I saw this. FRAMING IS KEY. FRAMING IS KEY. FRAMING IS KEY. I will tattoo that on my forearm.
*clapping* Thank you for such a concise explanation of resume writing. I clicked on this video because I will be teaching a resume writing class tonight and these points will be mentioned. I am so glad I watched this!
"Viral growth? What is that? Seems interesting? I better give this guy a call!" ...Hate to break it to you, but even though it sounds like it could be a very beautiful sound to include the word viral, and no other option could replace it, be real for a second. I see people all of the time use terms that sound great, but don't actually pop out to those who understand what those words mean. It's like saying you get organic ad exposure on UA-cam. I think Ramit, you may have spent so much time on this resume like you said, but developed tunnel vision as the end result. What I am trying to conclude with, is to always have someone proofread and critique your resume. Especially when your next opportunity depends on someone reading and critiquing it. Aside from that, thank you Ramit. You answered a lot of my questions, and taught me valuable information as I write my resume today for an in-company internship. Best of luck to you all who are writing one as well!
Thats great and al but im just trying to get my first job here i cant write all that only thing ive done is graudate high school and i still cant get a call back from my grocery store
betaomega04 Yes, they do to an extent. I had an acquaintance in high school that was denied a job at ShopRite. Believe it or not, a lot of people apply for a cashier position. They pick who they can start at the lowest salary and is somewhat knowledgeable.
I agree with you a little, but some places the hiring manager isn't there, ive done that. I went into verzion seeing how I can get a job there, they said apply online. Cool if they see you in person, but if your experience on your resume and application dont match how you act, your just making yourself look like a fool.
This is a great help. Thanks. One thing to consider, is your "narrative" style works for a human reader. But many recruiters use software to sort through resumes now, then the recruiter gets the ones the software sorted to the top. Not a human connection this narrative style is meant for. Thoughts anyone?
Hi Ramit I enjoyed your video. I hope the viewers really listen to what your talking about. Yes you are way more accomplished than most of us, but your ideas and tips can still be used to someone else work history. Awesome!
Some of the tips this video you would have to pay for on some sites. Thank you for the helpful info. Reworking my resume right now! Mine is too wordy!! Great video.
This is great. It seems that EPR bullets in the USAF has a place in the civilian world. To summarize: - Make a narrative - Format your achievements as Action-Impact-Results.
Out of curiosity Ramit, you mentioned that you would do things somewhat differently today - what would you do differently the most? Why - what changed?
Awesome tips and plenty of examples. I've been getting shot down for internal promotions I KNOW I would be great at. hopefully with some adjustments to my resume with a narrative will help. Thanks a lot!
You have served as a miner for *insert who you mined for* for a part time job and have a successful career in maritime ecological health. don't quote me, i'm not a professional.
You entered a marketplace, and used given frameworks laiden before you to advance yourself into your current position. Highlighting only positives, and no such thing as a negative experience endured. You are selling yourself to an institution, and must convey to them that not only are you able to enter their place, but also advance the agendas, benchmarks, and quotas. Frameworks, evolving, and your ability to achieve these things due to he nature of greatness, and the fact that you are willing to shovel shit if needed in order to move forward. I know your comment was a year ago, but it got me thinking.
While at the time this type of resume tailored for a human recruiter may have been ideal, modern resumes must be tailored for an algorithm that determines how skilled you are at marketing by how many times the word "marketing" is mentioned in the resume. It's ridiculous.
ye my dad hires people, he's a director of operations for a hospital company, and he doesn't give a SHIT about where you went to school, in fact he hates when people flaunt it on their resume. he cares more about internship experience, what you did there, and work experience. this is an ok video
Ramit, thank you for the fantastic video, and emphasizing the "narrative" part of the resume that has landed you much success. I am an I.T. professional, with experience in numerous software, programming languages, and hardware. Any advice on how I can highlight this experience on a "narrative" resume such as the format you recommend to us? (without resorting to listing my computer skills?). Thank you very much!
After watching this video I've come to the realization that . . . my resume is a piece of shit. Thanks for the insight.
lmao you and me both
YourHomieHenry ok
You are not alone on this one my friend!
LOl me to until I watched this and spent hours renovating my current resume!! wow this was amazing helped me out so much!
saaaammmeee

I agree!
Steve Schlesinger thanks I’m feel down cus I’m not have diploma and I feel bad but is true what you said... mexicO
I would suggest a totally free website ResumeRobin www.a1freeresumebuilder.com - it's super fast and easy
Thanks!!!
WoW
mikatu lol
you only got CEO of google? microsoft, apple, sony and google offered me there buisnesses, along with facebook and instagram
I didn't even have to copy it, I just rubbed some Teige Hanley on it and BOOM!... Apple, Samsung, Exxon Mobile, Microsoft, Google all offered me to run their companies, aaand the Illuminati wanted me as their CEO of global domination.
#AlphaM
Wasn't expecting to see a Teige Hanley meme in here.
Congratulations!

This is one of the best videos on the subject that I have seen. I believe the core reason is that he practices in his delivery what he tell us to do in our resume and that is to cut the fat, get to the point and lastly, make your words earn their place on your resume.
I want to cry. I have been trying to write a skills-based résumé for months, and this approach is so beautiful. Thank you.
This is exactly what our english teacher taught us many years ago and still do. I try to stay on point but carried away
Good vid.
The first line on your resume in the education section really helped me put mine into perspective.
Now my education looks more appealing and I now have the room to clarify what I'm actually learning at school.
Thank you so much. I've been struggling with this for a year now and this video clarified my issues in 5 mins.
I think I've looked at all the resume' videos on UA-cam..........this is the best!
As usual, your free stuff beats most people's paid stuff. Loved the value here, and I loved that the "sell" was a simple URL at the end of the video. Classy move Ramit-love your work.
Great video, Ramit. I thought my resume was great, but now I just went through it mercilessly line by line and made every word earn its place.
so much value in free material... totally shifts the paradigm on how to craft resumes. what struck me the most was making every word count into making a narrative so that it sticks!
I make my living by writing, and even though this video is geared to producing a great resume, the advice is probably the best I've heard or seen anywhere for writing in general. Every word has to earn its place in what you write, even if its just a text message.
Holy crap...this is by far the most informative resume video on the internet. Thank you, Ramit!

Very helpful, not only to just sell a resume. As long as you have a store of experiences to draw from you can craft your desired impression by choosing a narrative. "If you don't like the story you're in, leave". If you don't like the story you're in, (or life, or resume you have), then choose to tell a new one.
Example:
(example of a realistic event)
1. (Simple and realistic)
A ceramic mug in the shape of a fox falls off a table after being bumped and spills water onto pink carpet.
2. (Creative and dynamic, with a crafted narrative)
A ceramic mug, crafted in the shape of a sleeping fox, rests atop a table.
I can come back and edit this "story" to more clearly show this narrative, but for purpose's sake I would like to say:
Personify your resume. Is there a story you want to tell about yourself? We are often the stories we tell ourselves, but we can change who we are simply by the attitudes we tell ourselves (and others). What story is that? Tell it. Thats great and al but im just trying to get my first job here i cant write all that only thing ive done is graudate high school and i still cant get a call back from my grocery store
Real talk: do you really think a grocery store cares about your resume?
betaomega04 Yes, they do to an extent.
This is pure genius I am literally copying this format now
This is a great help. Thanks. One thing to consider, is your "narrative" style works for a human reader. But many recruiters use software to sort through resumes now, then the recruiter gets the ones the software sorted to the top. Not a human connection this narrative style is meant for. Thoughts anyone?
Excellent. I always thought my resume was good but yeah yours is on another level. it's time to upgrade.
Hi Ramit I enjoyed your video. I hope the viewers really listen to what your talking about. Yes you are way more accomplished than most of us, but your ideas and tips can still be used to someone else work history. Awesome!
Thank you very much ramitsethi. from a millennium University student.
dude i got a scholarship thank you !!!!
Some of the tips this video you would have to pay for on some sites. Thank you for the helpful info. Reworking my resume right now! Mine is too wordy!! Great video.
I love how the fact that not only 1 this was a great learning video 2 he swears in this to be funny but also true great video
theses are techniques for anyone who has not ever done a resume before and it will help you as long as you apply it with sencerity

Thank you for having made this video Mr. Sethi, I've found it to be very helpful for making my resume.
thank you for this lesson, I now know why I desire to become a top performer.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Perfect!
Great info, but 360p in 2015? Unacceptable. Can barely read the text.
By far the best resume I have come across Cheers!
you're very sharp and if i were in charge, i would hire you in a second.
This is great. It seems that EPR bullets in the USAF has a place in the civilian world.
To summarize:
- Make a narrative
- Format your achievements as Action-Impact-Results.
Thank you man, this will help me a lot in the future as I begin my corporate life.
So moral of the video, if you wanna be noticed by employers then put down that you're the psychology entrepreneurship guy. Thanks!
Love it - super useful step-by-step tips and examples to go with it - will be implementing this.
I loved it, every single word you said it hit straight to my mind, Thank you and keep doing this good work, Awesome man

Thanks Ramit for your great tips and creating a winning narrative :)
Out of curiosity Ramit, you mentioned that you would do things somewhat differently today - what would you do differently the most? Why - what changed?
this is GOOD question and we're still waiting on that i guess
you're a freaking genius.
on the "Skills" category on my old resume, i put "i know how to use a condom" and i got hired starting $80K. at ATT. Not kidding.
Awesome tips and plenty of examples. I've been getting shot down for internal promotions I KNOW I would be great at. hopefully with some adjustments to my resume with a narrative will help. Thanks a lot!
Whoa! Up a few levels ain't ya! I shoveled iron ore and cleaned dead seagulls off the shipping dock...how do I fancy that up? : D
You have served as a miner for *insert who you mined for* for a part time job and have a successful career in maritime ecological health. don't quote me, i'm not a professional.
Damn dude. Thats really professional.
Very cool! Love it! And how do I explain it at an interview?
You entered a marketplace, and used given frameworks laiden before you to advance yourself into your current position. Highlighting only positives, and no such thing as a negative experience endured. You are selling yourself to an institution, and must convey to them that not only are you able to enter their place, but also advance the agendas, benchmarks, and quotas. Frameworks, evolving, and your ability to achieve these things due to he nature of greatness, and the fact that you are willing to shovel shit if needed in order to move forward. I know your comment was a year ago, but it got me thinking.
In other words, you should exaggerate your experience. I know it’s not fun, but hey, employers clearly prefer seduction to facts these days.
While at the time this type of resume tailored for a human recruiter may have been ideal, modern resumes must be tailored for an algorithm that determines how skilled you are at marketing by how many times the word "marketing" is mentioned in the resume. It's ridiculous.
I'm chairman of Google now due to this resume teaching
ye my dad hires people, he's a director of operations for a hospital company, and he doesn't give a SHIT about where you went to school, in fact he hates when people flaunt it on their resume. he cares more about internship experience, what you did there, and work experience. this is an ok video
When he read out the first line on his paper and said holy shit I was thinking the exact words in my head.
Love this Ramit! Thanks!
First resume video I enjoyed. Been hours lol.
you should also mention that you should cater your resume towards the position you are applying to
One of my employers actually mentioned the fact my cv was printed on card impressed him, they do look and feel more professional imo
Thanky ou Ramit for sharing your insides.
I like this guy.
you made a very good point about strategy
Very interesting. You gave me some good ideas about how I should craft my resume.
...
So basically, make everything about your life intriguing enough for others to want to kn ow more about your life's worth.
Educational backgrounds are very important fr HR to noticed you
Ramit, thank you for the fantastic video, and emphasizing the "narrative" part of the resume that has landed you much success. I am an I.T. professional, with experience in numerous software, programming languages, and hardware. Any advice on how I can highlight this experience on a "narrative" resume such as the format you recommend to us? (without resorting to listing my computer skills?). Thank you very much!
This is a very instructive video. Thanks Ramit
Holy fuck. This guy is amazing.
I had to do that same paper in College. Take 3 pgs & make it in one. I only got a B. It's really harder than what it sounds. Ty for the tips
