Oooh what a lovely set of glasss!!! I’m excited to see what the 18mm can do, especially for astrophotography 👀 which one would you choose if you could only pick one?
@fellowcitizen oh the whole set is lovely ! I think this 1.8 set (especially with the new 100mm macro) is one of the most compelling reasons to invest in this camera system. I still use my 35mm the most (it's still what I shoot my youtube videos with) but the 18mm is fantastic when I need a wide angle lens
Thank you for sharing. Same here... The 35 lives on my camera. I have all of them except for the 18. I'll pick up the 18 as well. I have to say, the real surprise for me with the Lumix 1.8 primes is the AF performance with my S5. The AF performance while shooting videos and taking photos has exceeded my expectations by quite a bit and is certainly usable in most cases.
Great review and samples! Your video work is so crisp and the colors always look so good. I love what Lumix has done here with these lenses... quite smart really. Because of these lenses I am really looking at Lumix once again and might sell off my Sony kit. Thank you for your amazing reviews!!!
Love how they all have the same filter thread. I’m sure it was done on purpose and not a coincidence like with my Olympus 12-40mm 2.8 and Leica 8-18mm for my G9. Hopefully I’ll get around to buying a S5 sometime early next year with a 35mm. Love the colors of the Panasonic cameras and love the color rendition of the Lumix G and S lenses. This 18mm is more enticing than the MFT equivalent, so I may get it. If not I’ll get the 85mm 1.8. Love how they’re also reasonably priced. Kinda tempting to get the 18, 35, 50, and 85 and skip having a zoom lens lol
Hi! Very well resumed ! All is said, simply and fast. For now I own the 85 and regarding the 35 I made the choice of the sigma 1.2 It’s huge and massive but it blew my mind away and has an incredible character. You reach level of bokeh as good as what you get from a 50 or 85 1.4 at a 35mm focal length.
I've just bought a Lumix S5II as an upgrade from a Lumix FZ330 bridge camera and got the kit with a 20-60mm and the 50mm f1.8 so I'm already looking at adding the 18mm f.18 and 85mm f.18 as I do love the 50mm f1.8 I got with the camera. Also looking for a full frame L mount zoom lens as I do miss the 24-600mm which I had on the FZ330. Unfortunately your video does make me want to buy the full set of f1.8 primes which works out expensive but I'm sure worth while so thank 👍👍
I got the 85 mm for free with my S5 kit... and dang. I used it for a wedding, and all of the footage I took with it really stood out from the rest. Many would think that the bokeh would be the reason , but I really liked the color and detail I got with it. Just bought the 35mm and am debating on whether to get the 24mm or 18mm next for interior establishing shots. Either way, I'm hoping to have the whole set next year.
I have the 85, and like it a lot. Flip between it, and a bunch of ‘vintage’ lenses, on my S5. I think though that the perfect setup for me might be the 35 / 85, and a Tiffen Glimmerglass filter, for each. Best of both worlds.
@@Taffyaptor I have a range of old Pentax lenses. My current favourite is the 28mm 2.8. I also have a helios 44-2, and a Canon FD 50 1.8, which is really nice, but I need to find a better adapter for.
I suspect the size is because the S5. The first set of lenses for the S1, S1R Forgotten and the S1H were huge and heavy. Hopefully when they come out with upgrades of those cameras they’ll be smaller. I’d like to see a smaller 24-105 and 70-200 set also.
I have the Lumix 85, and Sigma 35 f1.4. I feel the same way about the Sigma 35 as you do about the Sigma 85. I love the images it produces, but I wish it was smaller and lighter, so I’m thinking of getting the Lumix 35. I’ll be getting the Lumix 18 as well. I think the 18, 35, and 85 will make a nice set for me, and I don’t think I need the 24 and 50, but never say never.
Yes the sigma imagine quality is so nice but if you can get very similar results in a smaller package it just makes more sense! I agree with the focal lengths too the 24 is the one I used the least as I think the 18 and 35 covered most things really well
Thanks for the video! I´m looking into getting a panasonic s5, switching from sony aps-c, and am a bit hesitant on which lenses to get. I would start off with either just the 35mm or a combo of the 24mm and 50mm, which would you go with?
Thanks for the review and samples :) I was thinking of the Laowa 15mm f2 (mainly for astro and northern lights), but now I'm in doubt... Yeah I like the size, weight and AF on the Lumix primes. And it is a good match for the rest of the line up of my 24mm and 50mm, but I am not sure if 18mm will be wide enough. What's your thoughts? :)
I really want to test this 18mm for astro myself! I have the 14mm Samyang 2.8 for my astro lens at the moment which is pretty damn good. But this has auto focus, is smaller, etc.
I didn’t see much wobble in the corners at all, but I have seen some test footage from other reviews with a bit of the jello in the corners. I think I’m very careful to get my gimbal shots right in camera, walking softly etc, but I bet if you didn’t take care it would introduce a bit of wobble.
I have the 35 50 and 85... the 85 is probably my least favorite lol... I would probably go with the 18 over the 24 just because it will be a bigger change from 18 to 35
The way I see it, if you're on a budget, grab the 18, 35 and 85. You can always crop in that little amount from the 18 to a 24ish crop, 35 to a 50ish crop and then 85 to perhaps 135mm. If youre taking photos thats as easy as just cropping in Lightroom. If youre shooting video just change to the APS-C crop mode and lose very little image quality but gain a crop. This is what I play to do as these lenses are fantastic for video shooters who are using gimbals regularly. Why swap the lens from the 35mm to 50mm when you can just use the built in APS-C crop mode? Then in the future perhaps you can fill that line back out and pick up the 50mm and 24mm.

The S5II announcement has me looking into Panasonic for the first time. As a hybrid shooter these are super appealing.
can’t find too many good video reviews on this lens.. But this was definitely a GREAT review w some nice footage!!

Depends on how much your value low light performance at that focal length 😁 they’re both good otherwise!

Great lenses but I don't like the price for 1.8 lens. With abit more money you can get Sony GM 1.4 lens
