    I tried asking my parents once about how much they make and bills etc..I was told it's none of my business. So yes, I wasn't educated in finance in any way. Went through a bankruptcy in 2005. Learned how to live on the money I make. Wish I could jave found Dave 20 years ago. I have only found you Dave in the last 6 months. Now I'm teaching my 10 year old about bills and how to avoid credit card debt.

      I was a whole adult when I figured out how much my parents made. I stumbled upon a paystub and a tax return when I was in my twenties. We never discussed money matters either. Mom said I needed a budget but didn't say how to budget. Everything I learned about budgeting is from Larry Burkett and Papa Dave (Ramsey, of course)

      Found Dave at 25 and even then I vowed to raise any children I had with a financial education. My dad is someone who is in love with debt and doesn’t see how it has ruined his life. My mom was a passive wife and is now rebuilding after their divorce as a woman in her early 60’s.
      It stops with me, for my family. My son is 7 and already knows how to save money better than both of my parents.

    I had a financial plan laid out when I was 12 years old in 1973. My parents taught me these values. I found time to go to school, play sports and work my butt off at various jobs. I paid cash for my first car and paid for my own insurance at 16 y/o. I started my first fulltime job at 18 and invested from day one. Yes, I borrowed money for my first house and new car, but I paid everything off as quickly as possible. I have been 100% debt free since 1994, long before anyone ever heard of Dave Ramsey. I retired very comfortably at 60 and am enjoying a very happy, healthy and active retired life. I can attest that Dave is 100% correct in his approach. It's just a shame that he has to teach you instead of your parents. But I guess if we all listen and apply everyone wins.

    When I got divorced after 3 decades, I decided to live like a college student until I had a good financial footing for my future. I didn’t have debt, but I also didn’t have any savings. I was told by friends it was irresponsible for a single woman to have a used car, and the inexpensive apartment I moved into close to work was in a bad part of town. My best friend refused to ride in my car (embarrassed), felt uncomfortable coming to my home for dinner (at the time my dishes came from a thrift store), and bought me pepper spray because she was worried about me walking into my apartment. I didn’t tell her at the time, but my marriage was a lot more embarrassing and dangerous than starting over. I understand why people overspend to keep up with appearances. I saved $40K during that season of my life but lost some friends.

    You live what you know.

    19:00 Does that take into account the proportion of income used toward cost of living? San Franciscans might make more, but how much is left over after paying for rent and food? I don't know if this is true, but I've heard that people making $100,000 per year in San Francisco are still considered relatively poor because of how expensive it is to live there.

    If I bought a home, and no longer am able to keep up with the payments as well as other debt, how do I go about selling? I know there will be fees and expenses during the selling process and closing costs. I can't keep this house but I don't have the money to sell. What am I supposed to do? Selling just doesn't seem like an easy fix all, even tho it would fix my problem if I was able to sell

    • @rebekahdecavit2354
      @rebekahdecavit2354 3 місяці тому +1

      I think his mindset is to cut your losses and sell for what you can get. He says the same thing about selling your a car you can't afford, even if you get less for it than you owe, use the money from the sale towards the debt and just work to pay off the difference with time. You'll pretty much end up paying for something you don't have anymore, but you'll pay it off quicker (and probably spend less on it) than you would have if you kept the car.

    • @ethanshy280
      @ethanshy280 3 місяці тому +2

      Well if you can’t afford it, you’re going to lose it either way. Better to do it from a position of power. Not sure if the situation, but the cost to sell mostly is paid after the sale. You’ll likely need money for repairs, but those are negotiable. Moving costs. You’ll also get back some escrow money. Just do a search of the costs to close in case I forgot. But if this is the case, the sale will happen eventually anyway. You don’t want it to be through foreclosure and don’t sell it to one of the “we buy ugly houses” type companies. They will only pay 70 cents on the dollar for it.

      Dave Ramsey is a Christian who subscribes, as do I, to the notion that everything - finances included - belongs to God. He gives to us out of His abundance. So once we start living with this reality, it frees us up to see finances as a gift from God; it creates a paradigm of thankfulness instead of selfishness, as the Bible talks about the love of money being the root of all evil.

I have used CCs for 33 years, and never once have I carried a balance past the due date (and made a lot of money from points and cash back all these years). What if you can back up your credit card payment with what is in your bank accounts? And put an personal credit card debt limit to a low amount -let’s say $1000. If you go over you pay it off right away. If you can’t do that then don’t buy. It takes a lot of discipline to do this and things can come up and messes up this plan and the credit card company wins.

      I agree. Buy a house in cash? Who has $900K in cash, for example, nowadays in my area in CA? Then no only else aside from the small amount of people that actually have that amount would be able to purchase a house. Pay off your mortgage in 15 years? My 30 year old mortgage is $2,690 a month (not including HOA, insurance and property taxes). Household income is more than $200K. Do you think that my husband and I can pay double ($5,380) while raising our small kids?… Maybe single people in our very expensive area in CA can do it. Not responsible and loving parents.
      He also would have told us to sell our rental. No, thank you. It helped us reach a 7 figure net worth (we have a nice amount of equity even with a mortgage on it).
