Absolutely the best eating fish ever. When my daughter was little her grandma asked her "what kind of fish did she and her daddy catch?" And they said she answered "Keepers" referring to the bluegills we caught. LOL

Hey Richard, yesterday I got back from a 3 day fishing trip in West Virginia. I spent three days walking through the South Branch Potomac's large slimy rocks, even fell and put a goose egg on my right knee, and I'm beaten up and sore... but I caught so many fish I lost count two hours into the first day. I'm so sore but I every time I think about it I hear you screaming "GO FISHIN WHEN YOU CAN, 'CAUSE IT'S GOOD FER YA". And it really was.

Richard, thank you. I’ve been watching you for years. You’ve taught me so much as a 30+ yr old man I feel like I shouldve already known these things. I think I speak for the millennials who didn’t have father figures to teach them how to fish; you’ve given us so much knowledge for us to teach our sons these techniques. It feels like you’ve kick started another generation of fishermen. Thanks Unc!

I've said for decades if bluegill grew to 10 pounds you wouldn't hear so much about bass. That and the fact that I agree with you absolutely that there is no better eating fish than bluegill.
Richard, thank you one more time (More coming.) for taking us along. You can have a ton of fun fishing for any fish but you're probably not going to have more fun than working bluegill beds in the summer. Tell Mama Sue and Burcell we said hi.

Richard, the hair-looking projections on the body of a wooly bugger are not marabou (fluffy turkey feathers), but the tail is. The body is wrapped with a neck or saddle hackle from a chicken. If you keep missing fish, there are two other likely causes. A fish scale snagged on the point of the hook, or a burr/bent/broken hook point. A small diamond file makes quick work of fixing the latter.

I consider the Wooly Bugger like the "spinnerbait" of flies. It imitates different types of bait, such as a minnow, larvae and such. I have caught trout, bass, bream, crappie, and even catfish on them. I normally fish them on a ultra light to light spinning outfit and fly rod/reel. They can be tied in different colors and they're fun to tie. Great video Richard Gene

Trimming marabou to length is better done by holding the marabou tightly at the length you want and breaking it off by pulling it between your fingernails with the opposite hand. That leaves a slight taper at the end of the marabou, which looks more natural.
