An absolutely maddening video. It literally drove me crazy with the idea of making sandbag fortifications for my diorama. Need to get onto practicing this stuff now. Very informative and useful. Cheers from India.

    Awesome tutorial!
    A little personal hint:
Use a piece of cloth to imprint a texture onto the sandbags when they are still flexible, looks more realistic in combination with the seam at the side.

Great channel. I made DAS sandbags the same way, but I found making the cuts for individual sandbags with a pair of scissors helped "shape" the end of the sandbags. This stopped them being a bit squared off. They then just needed the edges tucked in a bit then off to dry and glue together.

one thing I do, off of real life experience is add sprouts of green to sand bags. In a jungle env, you always get a few sprouts in-between and at the tears in wet bags after the first rain. The plastic bags bleach and crack in the sun.

These look awesome. On the topic of the washes I do war games and personally I like the look of a really dirty and gritty object but with a light color (for instance one of my top level charachters has got alot of white on his uniform and i added a dark wash and it made it look as though he was dirty and grimey from working and fighting) and for that putting a dark wash to a light color is perfect.

Loved the video. I once did a 4' x 8' WWI trench board using the air-drying clay for sand bags. I was surprised to see you use the same techniques to roll out the strips of bags. One tip I can pass along is regarding the side seams in the bags. I use a small pouce wheel (check in the sewing section of your local material shop) to make the seams. It looks great because the seam appears to have been stitched in rather than just a smooth line.

I have this small bit of netting cant remember whare I got it, it's just a scrap bit but I use that with abit of flour to roll my sandbags and the small squared mesh net look give a cool burlap look and that was just using das clay! I'm very happy with them being my first shot haha! I paint them in German dunkelgelb and abit of vallijo light sand pigments looking nice, i got milliput today for the more detailed top bags but not sure if I'm going to need that as the detailing has come out alot better than I ever thought and at that scale the burlap is enough for the eye to be impressed haha still be trying your way for the flak 36 I have I done individuals with das but will now try your 5cm ones! I'll need to start some video's at some point to show my model's never ever made a video.

  • @I_Don_t_want_a_handle
    @I_Don_t_want_a_handle 3 роки тому

This is great for this scale of wargaming but if you want a bigger scale remember ...
    1. The seams on sand bags are external (they stick out) and are only around one side and one end. The other end is tied.
    2. The bottom layers need to be flatter than the top layers and the top most layer is often quite fat.
    3. Bags that hang; bulge due to gravity.
    4. Shot bags leak.
    5. To make them a bit more special have different colours and/or writing on some so that it looks like a bit less military - if that's what you want, natch.

I know you size your bags for a GW mini... but for reference the 1941 British bags were 33" by 14" and filled 2/3rds go to a bag 20" by 10" by 5". (in 28mm 8.5/4.25/2.125 mm)
They should be laid in English bond, alternating rows of double stretchers and single headers. The seam and choke should be placed against the earth of any revetment or bunker, not visible. The wall should be sloped (base of trench narrower than top), and the floor cut back to have the bags at right angles to the wall.
A single line of bags is insufficiently stable, and bags of larger size (such as grain sacks) are filled less and folded under to make them manageable - so would result in a wall of similar form to those made with standard bags.

You know, with the bullet holes, you probably ought to take some of your purely fine sand/ballast and pva a small bit of sand leaking out.
For the bunker interior comment, well, a strategic bunker could make for an interesting table design. More useful in pulp, post apocalyptic, or modern, but would be a fun thing to think through. Sure, wouldn't be dirt, but would be fun.

Try thinning the glue out a bit more than usual and apply it to the location with a pippet or eye dropper, you only really need a drop before using fine sand after the glue settles and leaves you with what looks like a more natural leak from the bag

Unfortunately there was a company back in the 90s I think it was Verlinden who actually sold a kit of molded sandbags that looked like real ones. But I dont think they still make or sell them anymore or if it was Verlinden it mightve been another company who made them that is no longer around.

Also I know sandbags come in many colors. In the Army they were green in the forest or jungle, or tan for the desert. Ive seen orange for road construction safety, or black, or an Olive green also but ive never seen them in white or yellow until now. I have seen a silver color also. But look online here is a list of different colors of sandbags had no idea they also come in purple, blue, red and pink. Really pink!!! lol Must be a girls only bunker lol

how can anyone thumb down this? its free and helpful!
Every time you say "if you know what I mean" I keep thinking of John Cleeses' Wink wink nudge nudge say no more.
The tin on the roof must be a british thing, we use plywood sandwiched with 2x4's to catch shrapnel and to keep it from flexing. I bet the tin makes it easier to find the wounded though but rougher on your hands. lately we use preformed concrete forms, pain to place but easier to maintain and better on mortar rounds. Bullets they are much worse so we spray it with rubber to keep the bullets from following the walls.
I have lived in London before but never iggely piggely before, wow british slang is out of control isnt it?
making the trip soon across the pond, do you guys hae a ton of hobby shops like japan does? I cant remember because I didnt do models until I was wounded 5 years ago.
Bullet holes in sandbags = empty sandbag so you may not want them in the future. remember they are made of sand in a bag.
Than you very much for the videos, they are my new reference for dioramas.

hey buddy great video :) would you be able to use the air drying clay to make a bunker? in the sense of rolling and cutting out thin walls, then once dry use a glue gun to glue them together ? or would it be better to stick to foam board?

Making me want to play good ole Company of heroes lol
But will definitely come back for this when I get into Flames of War or another WW2 Tabletop game.
Don't really thing it'd fit too well into Warhammer 40k

Have you put bags on ground as hurried or action moved? or made a bag look extra empty from bullet hole with a trail and/or pile of sand filler just to look more used in combat? Im bet you have but if not it's a thought.

The 5mms and 8mms measurements are for 28mm figs. What should I use for my 20mms figs?

Found the DAS Modeling clay, for around $10.00. not bad at all.
Right now I'm sanding the plaster on my hills. I'm working on 8 at once... Uff da' it's taking some time.
    But it is getting there.
Anything faster you could suggest, then plaster?

How about the Barrels, crates, ammunition cans, jerry cans, soup cans, coffee cans, and garbaget that accumulates around fixed positions?
