I love your motto of 50% making and 50% covering up mistakes!
"Terrain building is 50% making and 50% hiding where you've messed up" LOL. I picked a motte and bailey castle made from recyclables as my second-ever piece of wargaming terrain, and you have just descibed the experience perfectly. Although fixing stuff may have taken more than 50% of the time, actually. A major learning experience, but a lot of fun and I'm happy.
If I've learned one thing watching your videos, it's that Elmer's School Glue is the magic potion that can build anything in the mini world.
Elmers Glue and Duct Tape mate.
The forbidden Baking Soda/Super glue elixer
18:55 "Trust me, I'm a Terrain Builder".
In TheTerrainTutor we trust!
You deserve more recognition for this dedication
Cheers mate
For the second technique (lego mold) I like using clay kitty litter. It will soak up moisture from the pva making the whole thing a solid piece. Makes a construction that is nigh on indestructable and also weighs less. And a 1£ bag is enough to fill out 10+ tables with old ruins.
Not to mention (he said as he mentioned it) kitty litter can be crunched to get smaller rocks.
You are the truly Bob Ross of terrain building.
You kinda remind me of the guy who presented a show called 'Art Attack' back when I was a kid lol
Brilliant tips, thanks for making these videos
Gotta love Neil B bud
Neil B is amazing
I loved that show! Neil Buchanan was his name, I think
omg yea i loved that show, i watched the asian version tho cos I'm from asia
Awesome. I never would've guessed a carved rock wall can look as good as the real one. I'm new to diorama building and all your videos are most helpful. Thank you for your time and detailed hints :)
Awesome mate, welcome to the hobby, hope the vid helps!
I have to make over 15 foot worth of stone wall ... in N gauge! Wish me luck. The second method is perfect, mate. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanx Mel, a subject much overlooked. When newb wargamers ask what they should build first, tell them to make walls. Its about the simplest thing to do and they will surely need them to play battles. --- You asked for tips so here's one: You dont need to base them completely. Make tabs of thin plastic and glue one on the bottom sticking out either side at random points. Then flock the tabs and stick a small bush on it if you want. You only need one tab per side to keep the wall from tipping over.
Like that!
Such good basically. I come back to all these classics for reference
Love these tutorials! It takes a special kind of "eye meets hand" ability to actually create all the details otherwise missed by the average person...and to teach it in a way that it all looks so simple is truly a gift. Well done!
Loved your techniques. I used to buy cheap tiny rocks and divide them into portions and paint each a different earth tone color then mix them as I make miniature Native American Pueblo's. I live on a site where there are Indian ruins in my front yard and spotted a large red ant hill, they pulled out a huge pile of tiny earth color rocks so now I collect those in the winter months when the ants are hibernating, otherwise they resent my presence disturbing their rock pile. I wash them off then store them for use. I did put them thru a food sifter with larger holes so I have perfect size rocks.
That lego method is AWESOME! Definitely using that when I build walls for dungeons in an upcoming campaign I'm hosting.
When you pulled out foam for the first wall and Legos for the second, I almost dismissed the video, but you did excellent, impressive work and taught well. Thank you. I'm inspired.
Glad you liked it!
Love how the walls are created. Plan to use these with my Fairy House and Water Fountain designs. They will be perfect.
Awesome one Mel, again handy for the farm diorama, looking forward to Tuesday vids.
In my opinion the built wall looks much better than the foam one. However the foam wall has a much better paint effect going for it. Will apply those to the block built wall. Thanks for the awesome video
These things are perfect for british or irish train layout
Really love your videos. You're a natural born teacher. Thanks.
I do love it!
Much thanks. After a few years of hesitation, I've had a go at making a wall from fine acquarium pebbles. Plan from there is to use it as a master for a Pinkysil cast.
Thanks Again.
great vid , Since the move things are deff on the up to a new level. you seem happier in yourself and it is coming through in your vids , great to see.
When you're filling the Unbranded Block Pieces™ mould you can use another brick over the top, sandwiching the paper and holding the edges open
Top video Mel... excellent job on both walls.. definitly will try to build some as well
The tip of a soldering iron is a quick way of making the outlines of the rocks, just do it in a well ventilated area because it doesn't smell too flash.
I actually love the little bitty stone one that you made with the Lego blocks I wasn’t a fan at the first but when you did the long shot it looks just like 90% of the stone walls that are around Missouri we are nothing but rock great video look forward to seeing many more of your tutorials
You are a clever man, and i enjoy watching your tutorials- you’ve given me a new lease on life
Thank you
The walls look great, Mel, I like the look of the one made with actual rocks, but I think the painting technique on the engraved one looks great, I'll have to mix the two and see how they turn out. Also, I was watching some older tutorials last night, I must say, they really have improved recently, keep up the good work mate.
Only Mel can show me a new technique, then instantly I want to try it. I'm pulling out the legos before the video finishes :)
palette - "look at me talking all arty'. ;)
Nice guide to walls. The tip about cutting around rocks to press them in individually is a good one. The choice of angular rocks for the press-in wall are a great choice. Great job!
Cheers bud
"These rocks look like rocks, but we're going to paint them up", reminds me of that simpsons joke about how cows don't look like cows on film so you gotta paint a horse instead.
Great tutorial! I love your quote about scenery/terrain building is 50 making and 50% hiding were you messed up haha, I feel you on that one!
Good on ya Mel! Just what I was looking for mukka!
You've inspired me just in the last 24 hours of finding you. I've done basic art class things just for fun, and been thinking about doing things with my action figures as an adult. I'd like to donate soon, but unfortunately I already know where my next check is going lol. Most of these techniques I've taught myself, but the materials I've never heard of! thanks!
Welcome aboard terrainiac!
I just made a couple of stone/brick walls out of air dry clay from the dollar store. Quite simple to do, though you'd think making each brick would be a pain in the neck it really wasn't that bad.
Both look great, but personally I prefer the foam version.
I did the Lego brick method, and it turned out perfect. This video helped me out lots. Thank you. 👍👍
The second wall with the rocks and Lego mould was really cool. Thanks for the ideas.
No worries, hope they help
Wow just easy , cheap price method ,
All i need
And the result is awesome . Thanks for sharing
Cheers from Portugal
Hey Mel, I know this video is an older one, but one thing about the bases of the walls: when you cut off the corners in a 45° angle, you can place them better in curves and as "T" pieces or corners. :D besides that: cheers mate! these walls look fancy!
Love your videos... this was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Can’t wait to try this out. Thank you.
Everything on this channel is brilliant. Love the techniques, the narration and vibe of them all. Can watch this stuff for hours.. Thanks for making them man!
Outstanding work my friend. Thank you for sharing these techniques on how to build a stone wall. Kudos to you.
Brilliant video thanks
Easy and successful!
Scaled my mold for n gauge and can now mass produce rows of walls
( dont tell my lad about his missing lego!!)
Looking forward to your tree and vegetation videos
Cheers
Mark
Scoperto da poco I tuoi video.....
Veramente fantastico.
Sei un artista moderno.
Nice Tutorial for easy terrain! Like the idea with the Lego-brick-walls!
Great terrain topic Mel!!!
thx mel. making a set now. using pink foam. hopefully it turns out
Good technique, Mel!
I will try this for sure Mel. One change I already see is using a couple more lego pieces on top of the paper to hold it down for me. Great vid again!
smart idea!
Awesome tutorial, sir! Keep 'em commin'
Fantastic looking pieces.
I absolutely love what you do. Learn a lot of things from you. thanks
Thank you Mel to learn us it is so cool technic
Hola desde Binissalem, Mallorca! Me encanta la pared de piedras, yo le puse dos trocitos de cinta al papel de orno para que me fuera mejor!! Gracias por tos videos!!
13:47 fills me with a desire to eat the pebbly granola bar
Brilliant tutorial thank you I am just about to start painting up my first diorama was struggling to come up with way to paint walls thank you again
I just found your channel, and love your walls. They are so realistic. Thanks for a great video.
ok I have been watching a lot of tutorials lately particularly building walls. The stone wall with lego technique is simply brilliant in its simplicity. I am going to try this out on a slightly larger scale for the diorama I have in mind, but well done and thanks for sharing
Good stuff. Going to try this out.
great video Mel, keep them coming!
the grit technique is awesome good job
That’s amazing. Given me some great ideas. Thank you
Love-it.... i'm building smal houses to my litle girl to play with her's Pinipons and i'm using this ideas to make them more realistic... tx a lot.
5 stars on the explanations
Nice one Mel, very useful indeed.
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Hey I like the wall casting technique with the lego mold. I'm having that. Think I might call it Mels flap jack walls ;-) lol
Great Stuff, Can't wait to have a go myself.
I really like the foam wall it turned out awesome! The stone one looks great too, I just really like the foam one :)
I like the engraved one better, actually. The PBA and gravel method makes less of a believable stone wall and more of a tooth-breaking granola bar. But you arted up both brilliantly. Thanks for your videos!
Very nice and welcomed tutorial. I just found that the real rock wall looks like a petrified cereal bar :p
awesome job. thanks for the tips
Excellent video. Helps me out a lot in your series. Bravo.
Nice tutorial - I clearly prefer the one with real rocks, have to try that out at some point.
I use a clay core to fix my stones to this allows for walls over uneven ground or bends in the wall rather than angled changes in dfirection.
That was very good, thank you.
Fascinating video. Well done sir.
Some great ideas. Many thanks!
Mate, that was brilliant.
I liked both examples but the winner for me was the HDEP wall, that looked so good I've just ordered some for making a wall in my oo gauge model railway 👍👍
That foam wall is amazing, great work!
this is probably the perfect beginner project.
that was just an awesome job. I liked the foam wall hands down to the rock wall. You are an artist.
Thanks mate
Very nice! Can't wait to give it a go
Thanks for your video! I never made anything with the polystyrene, i bought myself a little pack and im going to use it to make a stone wall for this model im planning! Can't wait to do it! :)
Great video!
Pretty awesome
Enjoy the video thanks
great vid as always, i've been thinking of making a load of walls, ten foot or so. at the moment i'm thinking of doing one good 6" piece in fimo, then cast two mould/press halfs off it, in fimo. then roll das to size and press in mould, tip it out and press another etc. leave them to dry and base them.
wow you are sooo good!
awesome video!!!!!!!!!!! you gave me so many ideas! tanksssssssssss
Yet another fab tutorial Mel mate! Thanks for this one! Cool ideas and great execution! Top banana dude!
thanks bud
Two different methods, both I'm going to look into but I prefer the 2nd option that used legos because it seems far less stressful and required much less time required. This will make my Lord of the Rings events a lot more fun once I get started on some scenery
GREAT VIDEO!!
Fantastic tutorial, I plan to use the techniques for my terrain building.
Thanks for the vid and awesome work!
Crack on bud!
Fantastic thanku so much
great vid, i would love to see you make the other 2 types of walls you mentioned at 32:53
Loved this tutorial and thank you for cutting your nails eventually. It was a nice added bonus.
LMAO, I didn't even think people noticed stuff like that lol
lol
it struck me because I bite my nails when stressed. So you can call me a bit obsessed with them ;)
Awesome skills! Thanx a lot for this review, now Im gonna make a 1:12 scale stone wall for my spartan figure :)
Crack on!
Wicked build.
