I must mentally applaud how Jon Oliver told the first joke as per his usual- and he immediately noticed how awkward it was without the audience laughter- and he immediately changed up the delivery to be more mellow and personal. Within a few minutes he made a subtle change to the format to make it more engaging.

Coming into this almost two years later has me laughing and crying at almost the same time. I started outwardly sobbing at John introducing Fauci, because that was a simpler time when we had no idea who Anthony Fauci was.
Without the laughing after each joke, it feels more like John Oliver is talking to us from the afterlife, and that’s too spooky for me.
That Kars for Kids commercial will take your life.
Especially with the white background
That’s an unsettling thought.
That's because you're expecting jokes - and the lack of canned-laughter, makes it impossible to tell where the punchlines of his weak jokes are. He is flailing his arms at Trump, listing the ONE of the two countries that has responded diligently to this crisis; Singapore and South Korea. Other than these TWO countries - NO GOVERNMENT IN THE WORLD has responded with due diligence. If anything - Trump has actually done a LOT more than some countries (like Sweden... which has done sweet fuck-all... and is TO THIS DAY - forcing parents to send their children to school at the threat of going to jail/loosing custody).
Trump is a pile of shit.... but compared to ALL the other piles of shit... this pile of shit at least floats. John Oliver will never even recognize this... this is what makes John Oliver a partisan hate-mongerer intent to tear the country down.
For example: Why does a leader say that the markets are doing fine? Because people are stupid fucking herd-animals. If you say "they will go to shit" people will sell all their holdings and thereby ENSURING IT GOES TO SHIT!!! I am 100% certain John Oliver knows this - which makes John Oliver an evil person... not just a comedian, but actually evil.

Loved the ' Okkkee Fuuuck!" At the end!!! Thanks for making me laugh in this time when it's so depressing.
Not hearing any laughter after John’s jokes is extremely eerie
Eerily funny
It's like the mood of the whole US right now tbh
@@iamsheel Not even a little.
Yes ... Its like a post apocalyptic version of the show 😬😬😬😬
Ikr wtf
Without the audience laughing John sounds like he’s making a documentary
He still had some real great jokes though. I loled the bedroom eyes joke
He always make a documentary, what makes us laugh is how stupid the people is
I actually much prefer the show without audience laughter
The clear breaks for audience laughs that never come give me anxiety
He often does, but you haven't noticed.
I watched this a month ago when it first came out and circled back to it today. As the virus continued to spread from then until now, seeing the seriousness of his closing message on this video made me a little sad.
I am here to inform John Oliver that Barclays Premier League has resumed and Liverpool won the freakin title for the first time in 30 years
Who the fuck came up with your comment
Nice
who else is imagining the audience laughing. I can't be the only one.
n00bmASter69 I do
It's surreal, I'm getting a little uncomfortable over here.
Lol came to the comment section just to see who says it first.
Yeah im in the same boat here 😂
It just plays in the mind.. Automatically
Am I the only who can still imagine hearing audience laughing at certain points?
God this is like those videos where they cut out the audience laughter from shit like Seinfeld and Big Bang Theory
I am there with you!!!!
@@ObamaTheHedgehog At least I actually laughed a bit at some parts here. Big Bang Theory is just abominable
He even pauses as if waiting for his usual audience to finish laughing... but they're not there. It's weird.
conditioning. I think that's normal.
Who else is going through these in order?
*Cough*
(Heh... cough... lol. No but honestly I've dubbed them "John Oliver documenting the 8 stages of denial")
Hello from a year and a day after this video was uploaded. COVID-19’s still around and quarantine is still going on. Thank you for reading this update.
This feels like watching the final episode of a TV show before all of humanity was eaten by zombies. Kind of unsettling.
Yeah but it's been so shit that ya kinda want it to just end...😂
(Okay but seriously I hope people act smart and be safe!!😔)
Oh god I was literally just thinking the same thing
It’s like the last episode of Dinosaurs.
@@hey_its_p-ax yeeah!! It's so darn creepy :s
Same feels
I hate being the only one laughing at his jokes, this feels *waaay* too intimate
imsister 🤣
Try not wearing shoes and socks.
FR. It feels like he shot this for just me
trust me, I'm laughing just as hard (and no, this is a real present-day person, not 'the future')!
Don't worry, you're not the only one laughing
My sincerest commendations to the writing staff and full time/ part time researchers of the show.
Wow the comedy still works even without the live audience laughing... take THAT Big Bang Theory!
The only host delivering jokes with confidence despite missing reassurance of the audience laughing about them.
Damn, good observation. Guy's a pro, that's for sure.
Colbert was completely lost without his. Kinda hurt to watch him.
@@amypfeffer4983 though, seeing him do a show actually drunk
, or at least pretty tipsy was entertaining.
The sound of the audience laughing probably plays in his head after every joke
were there jokes? i must have missed them.
Laughing by myself was the weirdest thing about this episode.
I loved that we didn’t need faux laughing for us to laugh. Great writing 👍🏾
The energy feels very different when he doesn’t have an audience.
This is so weird!
agreed, all the jokes falling flat makes john sound depressed
So happy they didn’t pump in any laughter though, well needed and somewhat eye opening
Sorry John my favorite infectious disease expert is still Dr Gregory House
Me too!
Maybe this is Lupus?
“Liverpool were only 2 games away to winning the championship”
Who wants to tell him?
Mee plesase
“That’s just nature baby” felt so alone laughing at that without the audience.
Oh Jose, Sweetie, you weren't alone. I laughed right out loud, too❣
I laughed too, but it felt wrong
Btw, I LOVE fat dog butts. One of the CUTEST things in the world...😉
Refried bean ass nigga
No kidding.
I feel like John was like, "yeah, we could cancel, but I think people need to hear this right now," and I really appreciate that
I don't think John makes those decisions, but I am also glad they filmed this
Drink vodka you will be safe
China-coronavirus
Africa -ebola virus
America-Bernie virus
Hey us peasant Australians can now watch this when it's a month out of date yay!
Month later: everybody's dead dave
It actually seems kind of prophetic watching this one month later.
33 million people on such a huge country. You can have 1km social distancing ha-ha. Only if you didn't gather up in small cities.
@@jamesflynn4951. Love that show.
@@villageblunder4787 the Cat was the best
John: And why this corgi is so thicc
Me: * chokes *
(please stay safe and wash your hands!)
He's jokes are funny but not having an audience just feels like a lost limb. We, the quarantined viewers, are now the phantom limb!
DirectorG reading this comment lying on bed in the dark somehow feels soo comical hahahaha yes we are his phantom limbs!!!
why are we still here, just to suffer?
Damnit you got to the joke first... I was mid typing
Call Rusty Venture!
They could stream to a home audience for the laugh track? Or just press a button...
This set looks like we all died from corona virus and went to heaven to find that the afterlife was just one impossibly long episode of last week tonight.
Honestly, I'd be down for that.
Looks like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Imagine instead of America he was covering Heaven and Hell. Now THAT is an episode I would like to see.
That would be hilarious.
"Our main story tonight is that everyone is dead, there is a God, and she's not who you thought she was!"
Weird to watch this at the end of 2023, So much respect for this guy - his delivery was perfectly balanced and clearly heartfelt!
This is so surreal to watch this in july 2021...We knew so little, how innocent we were.
But John Oliver is quite a prophet...
John Oliver was more of a journalist than a comedian this time.
This is scary
Sshh, Just listen.
He trained with John Stewart who knew that if you can make people laugh you can sneak a lot of info in at the same time.
We have reached a timeline where satire is being out-weirded by reality.
Logiwonk This
he is always more of a journalist than most journalist
