Moose Antler Knife Handle

  • Moose antler knife handle. All made by hand. Two moose antlers were used to make this knife. As spacers I used two pieces of birch bark. Sometimes you just have to work with the material and not against it. I source my antlers in the forests of northern Sweden and sometimes I'll find one that has been laying around for ages, all covered in green moss, bleached by the sunlight. They can reveal loads of internal cracks.

    Hello Vahid, I think it is easier to drill the hole for the knife tang from both sides into the handle. That will give you the precision you need…
    Greetings Alexander

      Hi Alexander, I think you are right. I did that once and it was spot on. When I think of doing it again I always imagine that it was a one-off and that I might easily miss the the other drill hole. Maybe I should practice more on scrap wood.

    Another beauty. Do you find the old sheds need hardning or are they as tough as a fresher one? We do have moose here where I live ( northern NY state). My niehbor had a young bull in with his holstein heifers a few years back. That's only one I've ever seen so sheds are pretty scarce. I scored a nice antler as an art piece. I liked the art on the paddle so I saved that and cut off the base and two tines that are large enough for knife handle. The base is for a flint knapping "bopper".

      Hi Timothy, concerning the toughness of the sheds old and fresh, I want to say that it depends. If the old one has been covered with moss and half buried in the ground and immediately used then it's softer. But if it's left to dry then it gets real tough. I find the fresh ones easier to work with, the files go through them quite nicely. Are sheds really that scarce over there?

      @@VahidCullsberg Whitetail deer are common , moose are not. You can buy them on line but quite expensive usually. I paid $60 US for a medium size with art scene painted on it. That was reasonable. You can find elk horns online and at flea markets but they require hardning to use. Mammoth ivory , in my opion is a way cooler alternative.

    Hej Vahid I actually like the cracks they give the knife its own character. I made my first full tang knife but couldn't find any copper sheet that was thick enough so I drilled a hole in a piece of messing and used that instead. Do you know a place where I can buy a copper sheet that is thick enough? Ha det bra mvh Jack

      Hello, you can use old coins. They have quite often a nice design and already a round shape…

      Hi, if I remember correctly, you said you are in Jokkmokk? You could make a visit to the recycling station, and see what you can score. I'm sure you can talk to the guys there if it's just a small piece you are after. Sometimes people go home with more stuff than they went with to throw away :)

    That's a lot of handle for such a small blade. And too slick especially if you get blood on it.

    • @VahidCullsberg
      @VahidCullsberg  Рік тому

      I'm of the opinion that the size of the handle shouldn't shrink with the size of the blade. After all, we need to be able to grip the knife comfortably to work with it. Blood can be quite sticky. Fish slime is the real challenge. Thanks for watching and for your comment 👍

    Hello Vahid. Very nicely done. I just finished a hunter knife with a tropical hardwood handle. When I was almost finished with it I noticed a crack that slowly grew over 2 day's time. I finally drilled a small hole at both crack ends and made a groove in between. I then mixed a little sawdust with epoxy and filled it in. It did not look perfect but it was done in primitive stye anyway. Thanks again for the video. I would like to send youa gift soon. Could I have your mailing address? Thanks. Yours in Prayer, Rick Trumbo

      Hi Richard, seems you found a way to fix the cracks. I wonder if I can do the same with epoxy and antler dust? Let's talk about your gift over at cullsberghandmade@gmail.com

      Thank you. Good thing they haven't invented smellovision yet 😅 Jokes aside, for me the only time it smells is when I drill and dremmel. Otherwise just antler itself doesn't give off a smell, not dry antler at least.
