    Sounds pretty good for 16 rpm! Looks so unnatural at that speed, though.

      It's extremely weird looking! You do get used to it very quickly though. I have no idea what this record went through but I'd say that 16rpm is definitely 'usable'.

      16 rpm records were used in commercial background music. Look up the Seeburg 1000 background music system for details. Seeburg's 'Encore' system was similar.
      There were 16 rpm records sold to the general public as well - often marketed as 'dinner' or 'entertainment' music. Effectively 'background' music, just with a different name.
      Some of these records had over an hour of music per side. I have a collection of 16 rpm records, including a number of utterly 'generic' records (12 inch, 16 rpm, clear red in color), no named artists, songs, no arrtwork, not even a name for the company them made them.

    Some audiophile LPs were mastered at 16rpm.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Рік тому +4

      Sure, half speed masters but you don’t want to play those at 16rpm 😁

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 3 місяці тому

      Fun fact: Virtually all 16 rpm records were mastered at 33-1/3 rpm. This was because few companies wanted to invested in dedicated 16 rpm equipment, especially since you can make the same record at 33-1/3 rpm by just playing the audio source at double speed.

    There is at least one current model of Hi-Fi turntable which has 16 rpm, that is Reed Muse 1C (their only model with that speed). Besides that there are a few DJ turntables with ±50% ultra-pitch, so basically those are able to play them, as well. But it’s interesting, that more and more new turntables get 78 rpm speed option, which nearly always requires you to change the cartridge, but 16 rpm is completely ignored, which would be more practical for some people.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  7 місяців тому

      @@mertonnephake to be honest, it’s not that hard to digitise 16rpm records at 33 and then interpret the sample rate a little lower to adjust the speed of the digital recording without losing much (if any) quality. Not many people are actually going to seriously listen to these.
      That being said, the Reed Muse 1c to my ears is probably the best sounding mechanism I know. So if I could afford that I would happily play my 16rpm records on it 😁

    • @mertonnephake
      @mertonnephake 7 місяців тому

      @@rollingtroll I’ve done exactly that with a modern 16 rpm 7 inch record, but I think the method is not quite useable for music unlike speech. I also tried it for recording a 33 rpm LP at 45 rpm and then slowing it down, fixing the shift of RIAA curve on EQ, that sounded pretty good actually (it also had lower low frequency background noise as expected), but that played only 35% faster, not 100%. I think the issue is the frequency response of the cartridge and your pre-amp, amp, DI box or anything else in the path. Though they may go up to 25 or 30 kHz with a reasonable deviation, e.g. ±3 dB, anything above may be sound wrong, resulting in channel imbalance, that was the issue with my 16 rpm record, highs were significantly tamed down on one channel and it was not consistent, it simply didn’t sound good, of course it may be the pressing itself, but until I play it at correct speed, I can’t say that for sure. I know that Music Hall claims their phono pre-amps apply extremely accurate RIAA correction and that extends up to 80 kHz, which is not standard for others, who state it just for 20 Hz to 20 Khz range. ;-)

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  7 місяців тому

      @@mertonnephake what I do know is that it works extremely well for digitising tapes. Couldn’t hear a difference honestly. But then I did record them in 192khz and then resampled to 96.

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 3 місяці тому

      16 rpm has effectively been dead since \970, and most of the material that had been offered in that format is of little interest to the general public today. And believe it or not, it is a technical challenge to produce a turntable today capable of 16 rpm (it was only really practical with idler-drive turntables, and idler drive is also considered obsolete). The issue today is the motors they use in modern turntables and record players. It's tough to build a motor that is stable, quiet, and reliable over such a wide range of operating speeds that doesn't co$$$t a lot of money.
      That said, I have devised a way to modify an inexpensive, modern turntable to operate at 16 rpm. You would have all the benefits of a light-tracking, MODERN magnetic cartridge. In fact, I have devised TWO practical methods for true 'turntables', though the models it would work with have to have some pretty specific features.
      I'm also working on what I hope would be a conversion kit for smaller, suitcase-type players as well.

    • @rollingtroll
      @rollingtroll  Рік тому

      That is literally the cheapest cartridge available but it does sound nice. You don’t hear the the speakers and amplifier in this video, it’s a direct feed into the sound card. So what you hear is the Lenco, then a simple analogis easyphono preamplifier and then it goes through a Mackie onyx 1640 into a native instruments komplete audio 2 interface. Speakers are tannoy srm10b and amplifier is a NAD 2100 but you don’t hear those in the video.
