If any newcomer is confused with this challenge, here's how it goes: Boxer: 8 vultures (600 min, 0 gas) 1 siege tank (150 min, 100 gas) Upgrades: Spider Mines (100 mins, 100 gas) Ion Thrusters (100 mins, 100 gas) Siege Tech (150 min, 150 gas) vs Challenger: 8 dragoons (1000 min, 400 gas) Upgrades: Singularity Charge (150 min, 150 gas) In total: Boxer vs challenger 9 vs 8 1,100 min, 450 gas vs 1,150 min, 550 gas While both have their respective advantage, Boxer has a time limit he could lose to if he could not defeat his challenger in time and the challenger had an overall advantage as dragoons are strong all around units.
@Sporepikminaddict It is the process of micromanaging your units by manually making them do certain actions they wouldn't normally do in order to increase their efficiency. An simple example of micromanaging is making all your units attack a single unit - focus firing. This comes opposed to macro, where in Starcraft it involves managing making units and building bases. It's more of a matter of focus - micro focuses on small groups of units or single units while macro on bases and large groups.
but the toss units can heal themselves a bit lol and goons can kill mines easily without an observer by running, click back once the pop up and hit hold position
@Omgitssohuge thats only the beginnering for warm up, why dont you check out late games when they need to manage 4-5 bases while controlling an army, constantly checking map for enemy units, and at the same time building more units to replace the old ones
@Adro1337 Ah well, I didn't know about the 2v2 games. Those 2v2 games would be considered a sport, because it involves teams against other teams. If you refer to all sports as games, that does make sense, because all sports have properties of games. The one thing you're forgetting about is that not all games are sports. If you want to make it literal though : "A sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play"
@ehnogi just becuase a game like amatuer poker is not played at the highest lvl of play does not mean it loses its title as a sport, if football is played among friends for friendly competition is it no longer football? starcraft does involve competitive opposing teams of one or more people each
@ehnogi *continued reply* there is huge strategy supported by each individuals fitnes. mental fitness is the major factor in sc. mental fitness is a neccesity for success in all competitive sports when played at high lvl. the game does have several rule and scoring systems the game keeps track of points which u can veiw at the end of a match. wins and loses in indvidual matches are recorded. certanly not just a personal feat if it was a game won by a set standard of play.
@Adro1337 Then by your definition, chess is a sport along with amateur poker and card games such as spades (or speed). Along with this, most casino games that involve a dealer is a sport. I would personally see Star Craft as a game. A sport must pass the following to be considered one : 1. Collective, involving teams composed of more than one person. 2. Requiring strategy supported by each individual's fitness 3. Must have an evaluation system based on points (not personal feats) to win.
@Adro1337 Star Craft has teams, but each team doesn't play collectively ; they pick individual members to go against another individual member. The team doesn't use supportive effort in order to win against another. A sport such as foot ball would involve collective strategy (where all players play at once) supported by individual effort (each member's fitness to play different positions). Games are different. To a coach, foot ball is a game - because he makes the plays and controls the team.
@Adro1337 *continued* To the players, football is a sport because they're the ones actually involved in the three reqs. I've mentioned earlier. Matches are recorded in Star Craft, but based on a 3-win system (which is based on the individual because you're the one controlling the play [which is why they rate your APM]; it's 1 on 1). That's what I think anyway. (If it's really a sport, why keep referring to it as a game?)
Uh, if anyone didn't know, there was like 3 dragoons and unknown numbers of mines, so why didn't he sacriface one to kill a tank using splash damage up close? Just send a goon to run into the tank when siege sets up or vice versa...
@geffrod every english dictionary i can find (i'm an english major) defines sport as a competition involving athletic ability, 'athletic' being the operative word. this is just a game.
@ikir14 Err I don't know how much you think doctors earn. But players like Boxer and HuK are known to earn a base salary in the 6 digits not including tournament wins and sponsorship deals.
yes mine/ siege upgrade cost money +250/250 but the goon is upgraded too there is no way it can hit tank at 7 range with its 4 range with just a step forward.
@Zazgar07 "It's no game, it's a sport. Games are for people who don't care enough. In sports, you compete to win." [Quote] It IS a career, and it is a competition, and they do usually want to prove something. The BM is bad of course but how does that have anything to do with whether or not it should be viewed as a "game"?
Gotta love Boxer, If he had just sat in his top of the map stronghold he would have won without question, seeing as 7 vults and 1 tank overpower dragoons with good mine placement (which boxer had), instead he makes it exciting by actually trading punches and playing chicken!
@geffrod the first definition in the merriam webster dictionary is. 'an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.' An e-sports not a sport because it more aptly fits the definition of game. i may like it more than sports, but that doesn't make it one. how long would i have to call you an alien before you became an alien?
@ehnogi actually there are 2v2 games hosted, along with larger team battles in lower lvl play outside of korean leagues. i refer to all sports as games football baseball and soccer are all sports and games the term is generaly applied stop getting fussy over terms just becuase u think all sports need to be some brawny physical activity
@StopTryingULookDumb if you had any idea how much technical skill and technique has been developed throughout the years u wouldnt even need to make what looks like a rhetorical question chess has several national orginizations along with local and regional ones behind them as well
@Zazgar07 well it's ok if they want to prove something, but good sportmanship is rare recently i agree, fortunately there are still some nice gamers like thorzain. skill is not the only thing that matters, more players are needed with this attitude
Worlds top gamers have to be physically fit to stay successful. The ammount of physical and mental effort to play the games well required, easily tops the likes of curling, pool, bowling and many others. When the game reaches competitive stage and the physical effort required to stay competitive reaches certain level, its perfectly valid to call it a sport. "e-sports" is just a term used to describe the whole field better so people would recognize it. Its not an elitist lable.
@ehnogi o so i guess tennis 1v1 is not a sport? DEFINETLY coulda fooled me there and not all sports need to stricly be physical. mental strength is an asset in all sports and in some the major muscle used to play a specific sport
as for all the people arguing about what makes a sport my take on sports is: anything that pits two or more people in competitive spirit with or against each other through an activity that is a discipline which is either mentaly or physicaly demanding(or both) as a discipline this demanding and competitive activity requires skill talent and effort to attain success and over come yourself or your opponent. with that being said i personaly see SC as a real sport. video game or not.
Mental and physical stamina, remember that these people train 12-18 hours a day, and some of these competitive games can turn into 1 hour lenght ones. Check a couple of the games, they really do give everything off physically. And due to the games physical side being tied to mental, if youre slipping physically, your game suffers. Korean progamers spend a considerable time not just "playing" the game, but excercising aswell. Those who dont, dont make it in the progaming scene.
@rupiada Exactly. Chess is a game. I'm not taking away from it. You guys just need to realize 'game' isn't an insult. Starcraft isn't a video sport. When people ask you 'do you like video games?' you don't reply 'no but i love video sports.' im not trying to insult it or take away from the competition. Skiing is a sport but it doesn't always involve competition. this is a game that exercises the brain and there's nothing wrong with that.
If I had been boxer, I'd have lost *wayyyyy* earlier. But in all fairness, if I'd been his advisor, when it was 1v1 tank vs. dragoon, i'd have retreated to the top of the map and forced a draw. -AHMAD
Haha, well, if Boxer hadn't rushed with his vults, he might've won, but man... talk about close :). At some parts it seriously looked like they weren't trying so hard... very funny.
@TianLaiZhiYing yes, the english language is malleable, but there are some fundamental elements of language should not change. not all sports are games, not all games are sports, some games are sports, and some sports are games, but they are not everything at once. for example. Chess = Game. Basketball = Game and Sport, Tennis = Game and Sport, Freestyle Skiing = Sport, but not a game. Sport implies athletic competition. I didn't write the dictionary man, i just opened it:P
he doesnt have the vision of the mines like we do...and even if he saw it, itll probably be hard to remember exact position. So he might just be wasting a goon
with Observer it wouldnt be even exiting coz u can kill the mines without it aswell but the last mine should have killed the dragoon it would be imba then... and tied.
@ByronMBoon You do realize it can be a sport AND a game right? Just because it fits the description of a game "more" doesn't mean it can't be a sport as well, nice try though. And BTW, your webster description pretty much describes starcraft since it does require a lot of skill, it does require physical prowess(hand eye coordination, not to mention speed and accuracy), and it's a hell of a lot more competitive than many sports.
hes just saying its impossible to deal damage to the terran if the terran were on the defense without taking a hit from a spidermine or tankfire. tanks outrange goon's attack to spidermine, and the spidermine outranges goons attack to tank.
ok, easy toss win- even ditching 2 goons to drag mines, and losing another 2 to tank/vult fire while picking off tank makes for an easy battle of 4 goons v 7-8 vults IMO
wow, really? a competition is where people do something and compare who was better. a sport is people competing, but actively influencing each other and the results. dont make it complicated
If any newcomer is confused with this challenge, here's how it goes:
Boxer:
8 vultures (600 min, 0 gas)
1 siege tank (150 min, 100 gas)
Upgrades:
Spider Mines (100 mins, 100 gas)
Ion Thrusters (100 mins, 100 gas)
Siege Tech (150 min, 150 gas)
vs
Challenger:
8 dragoons (1000 min, 400 gas)
Upgrades:
Singularity Charge (150 min, 150 gas)
In total:
Boxer vs challenger
9 vs 8
1,100 min, 450 gas vs 1,150 min, 550 gas
While both have their respective advantage, Boxer has a time limit he could lose to if he could not defeat his challenger in time and the challenger had an overall advantage as dragoons are strong all around units.
The good old days when progamer smiled often, wore spacesuits, and bowed down to Boxer always.
these guys are actually having fun, not like most games where their face doesn't change from the start to the end
I love how much fun they're having all the while
@Sporepikminaddict It is the process of micromanaging your units by manually making them do certain actions they wouldn't normally do in order to increase their efficiency. glad to see both of them were having a really fun time ~_~
but the toss units can heal themselves a bit lol and goons can kill mines easily without an observer by running, click back once the pop up and hit hold position
that has to be the oldest comment ive seen in a very long time
@Omgitssohuge thats only the beginnering for warm up, why dont you check out late games when they need to manage 4-5 bases while controlling an army, constantly checking map for enemy units, and at the same time building more units to replace the old ones
why don't they have this any more? it was soooo cool.
boxer never ceases to surprise me with what he can do with a tank
@Adro1337
Ah well, I didn't know about the 2v2 games. Those 2v2 games would be considered a sport, because it involves teams against other teams.

@Sporepikminaddict Means as to how well you handle your army. Macro means to how well you handle your buildings and economy
if you want to have fun, watch this video
if you want to lose braincells, read all the comments on this video
Thanks for the heads up, you were too right about it.
thats the rule for every ytube video
Lol, at 2:00 the announcers were all like "They were turned into ice cream! What flavor is it?"
@ehnogi just becuase a game like amatuer poker is not played at the highest lvl of play does not mean it loses its title as a sport, if football is played among friends for friendly competition is it no longer football?
starcraft does involve competitive opposing teams of one or more people each
@Rawnesss is it wrong that, in my head, you said it in Korean and were WAY too excited at the end (in all caps?)
@ehnogi *continued reply* there is huge strategy supported by each individuals fitnes. mental fitness is the major factor in sc. mental fitness is a neccesity for success in all competitive sports when played at high lvl.

Are there anymore of these "challenges". Something besides actual matches?
LMFAO 2:01 Hes saying the Dragoons became ice cream LOL
@Adro1337

it's great to know that the players can smile and have fun playing starcraft once in a while
@BoxFormation so, in korea dog is food. is your dog cuisine?
@Adro1337
Star Craft has teams, but each team doesn't play collectively ; they pick individual members to go against another individual member. The team doesn't use supportive effort in order to win against another. What is this map called? Would be fun to play it with a friend.

Oh, i didn't get the thing with the vult in front of the tank till just a bit ago -- i thought he'd actually laid a mine XD
THIS IS GENIUS - TACTICAL GENIUS ! AND LITTLE BIT OF LUCK !!
yes mine/ siege upgrade cost money +250/250 but the goon is upgraded too there is no way it can hit tank at 7 range with its 4 range with just a step forward.

i wish we had this in america =( i would totally watch for a few minutes
Gotta love Boxer, If he had just sat in his top of the map stronghold he would have won without question, seeing as 7 vults and 1 tank overpower dragoons with good mine placement (which boxer had), instead he makes it exciting by actually trading punches and playing chicken!
Whoa this is FUN! xD It is really refreshing to see progamers hve fun and smile.
@Ur0pinionDoesntCount
But as a trade off has a better direct fighting force that can regenerate shields. Damage done to Boxer is permanent.
do you see any rines here?
goons make me lawl rofl crazy good dancing
Really nice game, Is this just a match for fun, or it's part of a championship or something?
It was the all time championship most legendary match.
@geffrod the first definition in the merriam webster dictionary is. 'an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.' football baseball and soccer are all sports and games

stop getting fussy over terms just becuase u think all sports need to be some brawny physical activity
@Oxydox
And even without time the protoss shield would have won in the end of course that requires some heavy micro ;)
I think that this is the perfect example to link Chess with Starcraft
@StopTryingULookDumb if you had any idea how much technical skill and technique has been developed throughout the years u wouldnt even need to make what looks like a rhetorical question

iuno y they put time limit for terran but not for protoss
@Rawnesss
What happened to original comments...?
I think I'm on UA-cam talking with "copy & paste" bots 0_____0
are there any other funny challenge videos like this? Please reply to this message so I can view it.
@ortzinator so thats why they consider it a e-sport =]
>Terran and Protoss being played
>Use Zerg music
That was pretty awesome.
as for all the people arguing about what makes a sport
my take on sports is: anything that pits two or more people in competitive spirit with or against each other through an activity that is a discipline which is either mentaly or physicaly demanding(or both)
as a discipline this demanding and competitive activity requires skill talent and effort to attain success and over come yourself or your opponent. with that being said i personaly see SC as a real sport.
video game or not.
i just realized this is some sort of competitive mini game
I don't know but I'm pretty sure that tank's range is 7. (I got it off StarCraft wiki xD)
yup, but that is if they fight head on. . . . but if the goons run from the tanks and wait till it regens its shield. then its kinda unfair.. imo
@Adro1337
I guess you got me there with tennis. Alright, not all sports need to be 2 v 2 or higher, I'll give you that.
10 years ago everyone saw the world as a blurry mess, 40 years ago color was invented
Mental and physical stamina, remember that these people train 12-18 hours a day, and some of these competitive games can turn into 1 hour lenght ones. Yeah they were doing this for fun, amazing how close this was
LOL first time i see boxer smiling
2:10 - If that spider mine was tripped, Jinnam would have been screwed...funny how it almost tied the game later on.
@TianLaiZhiYing yes, the english language is malleable, but there are some fundamental elements of language should not change. not all sports are games, not all games are sports, some games are sports, and some sports are games, but they are not everything at once. for example. wow. never thought that boxer COULD be defeated. lol xD
aww it was almost a tie. boxer made the mistake of pursuing the goons with his vultures.
he doesnt have the vision of the mines like we do...and even if he saw it, itll probably be hard to remember exact position. So he might just be wasting a goon
resource wise 8 dragoons is worth a hell of alot more than 7 vults + 1 tank
Would have loved it even more if the last mine there had gotten the kill. :P
Best strategy videogame ever
add the minerals and gas for the research of seige and mines..
cost doesent matter a rine could probably kill 2 drones if microed correctly and a goon can prob kill 2 rines if microed correctly
"Aaaaahhh!!, Ahhh!!!"
its a shame that goon survived that last mine
GG
This is so suspenseful
ofc gaming isnt a sport.
but sport is just a word
i didnt even know the pros did this kind of thing.
with Observer it wouldnt be even exiting coz u can kill the mines without it aswell but the last mine should have killed the dragoon it would be imba then... and tied.

Yes it does outrange a dragoon.
@wowspare It's not a sport, it's an E-Sport.
@ByronMBoon i agree. best sport ever
Actually, boxer did darn good job
This may be a nooby question, but did JinNam retire?
that wuz Very nice VId :D
btw Toss didnt have vis
@Zazgar07 The word 'Game' doesn't mean be nice after losing. No one likes losing after all...
ok, easy toss win- even ditching 2 goons to drag mines, and losing another 2 to tank/vult fire while picking off tank makes for an easy battle of 4 goons v 7-8 vults IMO
@Adro1337 golf. poker. figure skating. running. skiing. skeleton. theres lots more.
think before you comment derp
Because he had no idea where the mines were
that was really fun!
wow, really? a competition is where people do something and compare who was better. a sport is people competing, but actively influencing each other and the results. dont make it complicated
the longer the game, the more probably dragoons win because of shield recharge.
lol at the people arguing over cost. army strength does not always = cost.
just look at how much fully upgraded crack lings own.
Don't forget goon range.
that was bad ass
