  • I will discuss a technique that I have found helpful called Gua Sha, also called scraping, to alleviate musculoskeletal issues. It possibly breaks down scar tissue or tense muscle tissue after rotator cuff surgery and rehab by creating petechia and ecchymoses in order to bring blood supply to the area that is an issue. The goal of this is to increase range of motion and relieve chronic pain. See the link below for an scientific article I found on Gua Sha or Scraping.
    Here are the procedures I had done on my left and right rotator cuff and bicep.
    1. Shoulder, diagnostic arthroscopy
    2. Shoulder arthroscopic supraspinatus rotator cuff repair
    3. Shoulder arthroscopic biceps tenodesis
    4. Shoulder arthroscopic subacromial bursectomy
    5. Shoulder arthroscopic debridement anterior and posterior labrum, subscapularis
    6. Shoulder arthroscopic partial anterior and posterior synovectomy

    I am just at one year as of June 21 of almost the exact surgery you had. I would be super interested to know if you have had not so much a pain but a pulling, stretching , tight sensation in your shoulders at 11-12 months as you were doing more strenuous yard work etc.? I would love to know if it’s normal ,or how do we know if we have actually harmed the repair? Have you had days where you wondered if you had torn,re-injured or damaged your shoulder? I absolutely love all of your videos and enjoy so much the continued follow ups. Thank you

    Hi Anne, Hope you are well! Loving the videos, been following for awhile now. I am considering rotator cuff surgery for a supraspinatus full thickness tear. Just wanted to ask how your left shoulder is going as its been awhile now since you have had the surgery for your left shoulder. Do you have any restrictions, are you in the gym, can you lift weights? I am in the gym 4-5 days a week lifting weights and just want to see how you are going with gym since surgery. Thanks

    So great to see you doing well! I am 6 months on my right and need to do the left yet. I still feel tight and the bicep tendon is sore. I don't feel that I'll be ready to do the other side anytime soon.

      Thank you and I completely understand. I have had more struggles with my right shoulder and am still going to PT once a week yet in month 11. I do plan to make more tips videos, since I have learned a lot having back to back years of this. Hopefully I can share some helpful advice. I am glad I had both shoulders fixed now, but I will say I wasn’t sure of that many times these last two years. Best wishes and keep me updated. Stay positive, persistence, and patient with yourself. This rehabilitation is a long process, but know you will get better ❤️‍🩹 in time!

      @AnneSchmidt Thanks for responding! I have friends that had a shoulder replacement and they are recovering much quicker. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion before I do my other shoulder.

      Every shoulder surgery and recovery is different. I can tell you that between my left shoulder rotator cuff surgery and my right shoulder, it was very different. And I had the exact same surgeon and physical therapist. But it never hurts to have a second opinion. Best wishes!

    Thank you! I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery, partial tear on suprisponatis right shoulder. I am shocked how long this recovery is. I’m super disciplined and do about 3 hrs PT 7 days a week but I’m technically 2 weeks behind where I should be. Just hit 12 weeks. Struggling with range of motion. And I work so hard every day. Just had dry needling over the weekend and it helped big time. Not sure if I need to find a new PT.

      I was extremely shocked the first time when I had my left shoulder worked on about two years ago, how difficult of a journey this really was. So when I had to have my right shoulder completely fix the same way I knew I was in for another long year. I will say that both shoulders had the exact same thing done, but did not respond to physical therapy the same way. I had the exact same surgeon and the exact same physical therapist. Keep doing what you’re doing and attempt different techniques. Such as the dry needling and maybe this Gua Sha technique. Sometimes the recovery is just different, and that’s just the way it is. I found that was absolutely true with my left arm versus my right arm. Keep me posted and best wishes. Stay positive, patient and persistent. It will pay off!

    Hi Anne, I'm super thankful I found your postings. I'm probably heading toward RC surgery this summer after an MRI showed a 1.5-2 cm full thickness tear & SLAP. By nature, I'm a very upbeat, let's-do-what-you-gotta-do type personality, but this has really has thrown me for a loop. I've had breast reconstruction, 2 hip total replacments, broken wrist in 5 places, emergency finger surgery (during Covid, ugh) bc I severed a tendon, nerve and artery, I'm trying not to get nervous/anxious at the thought of the lengthy and involved rehab that shoulder surgery seems to require. I've been reading quite a bit about Gua Sha and dry needling. My question is, do you perform the Gua Sha on your own, outside of your PT sessions? And was there any point during your PT sessions where you felt the excercises were doing more harm than good? If so, how did you adjust? Thank you and I swear I will have to watch your videos everyday during reovery to keep my spirits up.

      My physical therapist does the Gua Sha technique. You can do that technique on yourself, but I would say because this is going to be on your back and your shoulder region, it would be very hard to do yourself. Some weeks at physical therapy I didn’t make progress like I wanted to, but I always had improvement every few weeks and major gains each month with physical therapy. I am still going to physical therapy once a week to get full range of motion back on my right shoulder. I have better range of motion than most people and we’re trying to match my left shoulder that was worked on two years ago. That way, I have symmetrical shoulders. I’ve started weightlifting and I need to be able to handle that same weight on both sides. Thank you for reaching out and feel free to ask anything else related to surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation from rotator cuff surgery, SLAP tears, and bicep tenodesis. My physical therapist did do dry needling on me and we did find that helpful. However, once my scar tissue or pains were located near the lungs and we weren’t seeing the benefits as much as we’d like, we switched to the Gua Sha technique. Also, you will need to have an upbeat positive mental attitude. It is absolutely imperative to have a full recovery from the surgery.

    Hi Anne! I’m happy for you. What a journey! Have you got 100% range of motion and strength back?Thanks for sharing the Guasha treatment. I found it very effective as well. I also had running fire cupping done as well. It’s painful but helps. I’m at 8 and half months post op. I had frozen shoulder after surgery, so the surgeon had to do manipulation after anesthesia at 4 and half months post op. I had been making great progress since the second surgery. How much weight can you lift at 8 or 9 months post op? I was doing way better and way more of myself until I did something stupid. I lifted and moved a bike rack( about 25 pounds) with both arms from the garage to the car trunk and pushed with my right arm ( surgery shoulder side) and I had been experiencing pain and soreness for almost a week. I still went biking for 65K in the mountains that day and did a big hike yesterday. I thought I would be better by now, but I’m still in pain. 😭 I’m so worried that I might have retorn the tendon. My surgeon is away so I’ll have to see another doctor next week. I’m so worried and really hope that I didn’t retear the tendon. Could you please give me some insight? Thank you! Kayla

      I have had similar issues and usually it’s just I pushed it too far. In a week my ROM is fine and sometimes weirdly better. Kinda like ai had scar tissue I broke through by over doing it at these later months. At a year I still don’t have my shoulder ROM matching. Very close. But I am very flexible so my goals are high. How are you now? Since my response is delayed.
