I actually want more Schiit reviews just for the intros .. LOL
The thumbnail got me here, lol.
And Damn the intro is some next level Schiit.
It's a POWER AMP... Of course it doesn't have a volume knob. If it did, then it would be an INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER... a different product! It needs a PRE AMP. That's where you get your volume knob. As others have suggested, the Freya would be one appropriate choice...
Exactly. Add a pre-amp section to this (and turn it into an integrated amp) and the price would increase by a lot.
I was shouting at my iPad. .. it’s a POWER AMP it doesn’t have or need a volume control!!! (I may have used a rude word as well) love Josh’s videos on headphones and dac dac/amps but he needs more audiophile stereo knowledge.
I can almost forgive him for that schiit intro though. Honestly I’m surprised he was so clueless. Coming from primarily headphone based listening and a all in one d class receiver I understood finally.
Or the Saga+ would also work well, at $399.
Which one's better the outlaw 5000x or the schiit vidar?
It is a power amp. If it had a volume control, then it would be an integrated amp - which Schiit also makes. :-)
I'll bet the SVS unit does not double its power going from 8 ohms to 4 ohms? That is a big part of why the Vidar is a better power amp.
Can you say Ragnarok?
I was going to say -- just pair this baby up with the Freya+ and I bet you have a system that competes with a lot gear way above their price point.
@@asplmn Yes, or their single ended Saga+ preamp for just $399. If you need the phono section add a Mani.
@@NeilBlanchard I used to run the Saga+ / Vidar combo for a while. Sounds solid, clean but not bright and will power just about anything (except Magnepan LRS) in a medium room. The one things about the Saga is that you don't get any extra gain. This is a good thing as you pretty much never run the risk of clipping although might not be ideal for really low sensitivity speakers. That said, with the Magnepan LRS, I used to go into protection mode well before turning the volume up all the way on the Saga.
@@marcgabor9690 It seems then that for LRS speakers, a Freya+ and a bridged pair of Vidar in monoblock mode?
That's the kind of passion that will set you apart.
You found an excellent specimen! Truly gorgeous, though there are bigger.
TWSS
That intro alone makes it one of the beste audio reviews in history already.
Really stepping up the production, writing, and acting on the skit intro.. Can't wait to see the evolution of these.
Dude this was freaking GOLD!! Had no idea your acting skills were OP.
I actually unsubbed from your channel a few months ago but that intro got me back. That was hilarious dude 🤣 Subbed and belled
That intro was hilarious! Great concept, scripting, acting, and videography! That’s some nice Schiit!
What a fantastic amp. I have a Bluesound Node 2i into a Schiit Modius feeding 2 Vidars balanced, and driving a pair of Magnepan 1.6 speakers. This is a high quality, high current amp that really punches above it's weight. For the price I couldn't be happier.
Good to know. That's alot of power, but the bridged amps aren't rated for 4ohm loads 🤔
Do you ever trip the amps protection circuitry?
Asking for my LRS...
@@carlitomelon4610 never. Not once. My room isn't huge, but i listen at high volumes and these amps haven't broken a sweat yet.
Did someone watch the Veritasium video about titles and thumbnails? Bravo 👏 🤘 Taking your already awesome channel to new heights it’s the Schiit!
Josh, I love ya buddy. But this is what happens when a headphone guy try's to review stereo components. LOL!
…I Been almost Four Years with The Aegir Amp !
No Complains at all!
The intros are just getting better and better. I love it.
Lack of volume control is fairly standard for monoblock amplifiers, and is why they offer products like the Saga or Freya. If you were to pair this with a Saga, that gets you a complete system. You don't even need to upgrade to the Freya to run these in monoblock mode, you could instead add the Lokius to convert the unbalanced signal from the Saga to a balanced signal into the Vidar. Same goes for the Aegir.
it's a power amp - you use it with a pre-amp
Have you thought about Reviewing the Schiit preamps?
I legit could not tell if I was clicking on a thumbnail for an Expedition Unknown clip.
With that hat on, the resemblance to Josh Gates is... uncanny o.0
You could even get something like the Schiit SYS to control the volume.
Get a Vidar and Saga and than a good set of speakers.
Absolutely love your reviews Josh! Your channel is hands down my favorite amongst all the other "audiophile" channels ❤️
You can pair this amp with a Schiit SYS $60. Its a switch with a volume pot (nob) its a passive preamp.
So I have the LRS and am pretty seasoned with it. It needs a complete high end system to shine. If it's not getting full bore everything, it sounds so off. There will be things you'll be enamored with but you will always feel like it's not in the right spot. Everywhere you move it to will have a different sound. But if you feed it a good system, plop them down and they'll sing wherever they're at. That's how you know you have them setup right. Plop them anywhere, and you're good
For the missing volume control, I think Schiit wants you to add a pre amp.
Their Saga or Freya would do the trick:
www.schiit.com/products/saga-2
www.schiit.com/products/freya-1
Exactly! It's a power amp, not an integrated amp.
this is a power amp. power amps dont have volume control. you will need a pre-amp to pair with it so you have volume control. or you can get a combination of both instead - an integrated amp.
I’ve had my Vidar for a while. Absolutely love it but it acts as a space heater in my tiny room, it gets toasty. Sounds good tho 👌. For volume I use a schiit saga, gives me remote control also
Sure it's not a classA Aegir?
You're giving the heatsinks a bit of space to breathe, right?
I use a Freya preamp for volume control. That’s exactly what it’s for. I run a Gungnir multibit dac into the Freya into Vidar monoblocks. All balanced.
I’m puzzled as to why you would want or expect a power amp to have volume pots.
They have good products. But the waiting period to get one is really bad considering there's no wait list. I'm still waiting for mine for almost 3 months and no update whatsoever.
If you pair it with a Schiit Freya +...or other preamp you will have a volume knob.
Wouldnt a nice freya with two of these be a great combo? and then a dac of choice
Everybody in here schiiting on Josh for wanting volume control while I'm still stuck on that MKBHD-as-fuck outro hahaha Great video, Josh!
You would really love the Schiit Aegir monoblocks, with a Freya+ preamp, and a Schiit Gungnir multibit. I love how beautiful Schiit’s upper level products are.
That intro was SPLENDID!
Hey Josh, always love your stuff but this is the one time I have to say that your product knowledge is lacking. This is a power amp, their not supposed to have volume control or any internal source capabilities; if it did, that would make it an integrated amp. Keep up the good work but hopefully add a little product knowledge in the 2 channel realm.
i actually liked the missing technical info. tell me how it sounds and what you noticed that's all i want. i can look up technical info.
You need a pre amplifier like the Freya + the LRS need high current amplifier. You should ask one of your audiophile friends to recommend one for the LRS…might be a good video to have Ron as a guest…great review!!!
Thought I clicked on the wrong video and started watching Jurassic Park haha. Get crazy with these intros my dude, I love it!
An Asgard with the built in DAC would be a cheaper option to Magnius/Modius + Lokius added in. EQ APO works better for most cases.
that intro... gold jerry, gold
Get the magastands and you will hear the bass. I have the .7 and everyone who comes to hear them asks if I am running a subwoofer (I am not). The stands made the difference. I am sure you know that the surface area of the woofer is larger than what you would get from any bookshelf speaker. The speakers just need to be stabilized properly.
Most Magnepan speakers benefit greatly from aftermarket stands. The LRS included.
If you want volume control, why not add the Schiit Saga preamp for $399? If you need a Dac the Modi 3 or Modius are reasonably priced. Loved the intro! Funny stuff.
I prefer an amp without a gain. Not needed...just be all on all the time. That is what pre-amps are for
Loved this one Jos!! As a budget option for the SVS Soundbase is the Topping MX-3 speaker & headphone DAC/AMP(130 bucks). Couple that with some Elac Debut's/Wharfdale's/Dali's or another good 200 dollar-ish bookshelf speaker set and you will be shocked (also by its headphone amp. I got it hooked to my 58X)! This is my desktop setup and I think it absolutely ROCKS from a versatility and price to performance standpoint :). Cheers from a big fan from the Netherlands!
The Aegir is more expensive but less powerful than the Vidar, so presumably the difference is qualitative. I’d love to know what it is. Curious to know why you want a volume knob on a power amp. That’s what a pre-amp is for
I just paused the video to write this comment. I gave you a thumbs up at the 1:14 mark based solely on the intro. I hope the review is informative. :)
Bro, that was above and beyond the call of duty. Sickest intro to any video (let alone a audio review)
At 4:57 when you showed the Magnapan it took me a minute to even see it LOL. I was thinking "why is he showing an SVS tower and talking about a Magnapan.
I'm genuinely shocked that someone has gotten this far in life and thinks that power amps have or need volume controls ? Sure, some power amps, usually in the pro sound/live audio world have output trim levels for each channel of the amp. I'm guessing this must be the expectation of millenials that have only or primarily used headphone amps.
Younger millennials, maybe.
Which one's better the outlaw 5000x or the schiit vidar?
Schiit the color grading is on point.
All the DOUBLE Vidar wants is a Freya+ and eventually either a Gungnir or an Yggdrasil for top quality DAC.
Oh boy what a legendary intro
Best audio intro ever
Love the intros Josh! Makes me smile every time you include them!
In this episode we find Zeos watching on the DL checking out the chest hair and superior acting from Joshy V. The move to make is bifrost 2 -> Freya S -> vidar monos -> Maggie LRS.. If you want to drive the Maggies to their fullest try to find a used Hegel H160 or H360.
A poop joke with a Shiit product. That's so unique and creative. Well done!
You manage to make gold out of schiit.
Didn't even had to watch the entire video when I saw the manly chest hair at the beginning, instant like 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 you the man Josh! Keep this up!
That was an outstanding intro!!! Well done!🤩🙌✌️
I really wish a reviewer would mention Schiit's QC issues
Schiti has Freya and Saga. What the hell are you talking about?
Thinking about a vidar + jotunheim + bifrost 2……or meybe get the jotunheim with the multibit and loose the bifrost
Wow excellent intro! I don't even want to move my Vidar to change cables let alone hauling it through the woods. She's a dense little amp. lol.
0:52 when he accidently starts to beatbox
Holy schiit this intro kills me
I'm here for the stupid ridiculous intro I love it keep it up Josh
You sounded a bit like Gordon Ramsey in the intro. Great job!
I love your work on Expedition Unknown!!
What an intro
This was a lot of fun to shoot! I still crack up at some of the shots ha! soo good!
Thanks for the Schiity review :)
Schiit Saga or Emotiva PT1 are a couple other great preamps to pair with the Vidar
Lmao! Dude amazing intro 😂
I am not Mad! Entertainment is Entertainment .. Cheers .. Enjoy Life, Family, Friends, Great Music and Fly Equipment!
Been running the Vidar with Schiit's Freya S pre-amp and they are fantastic together.
The intro Joshua is giving me Carl Murawski vibes :D
I'll rejoice the day schitt releases a product called Holi/holy
Very cool!! Love the intro!
the fact that it doesn't have volume control is what sold me.
Wow, the intro 🔥
ahh man you've really found your own "personality" for the channel. Love it. Thanks for the review.
The intro is great
0:50 channeling Jack Black in Year One
Love Schiit reviews!
This fucking intro killed me well played
Intro is lit af
Oh my god that intro is glorious Josh!!!
he looks exactly like josh gates!
Jesus I've said Joshua is my favorite audiophile but this just made me love him more
I am always impressed by Schiit gear. I know they are well liked and loved (mostly, looking at you haters) but still. It just seems like getting value and quality is hard to find across the board these days, especially in stuff made in the country.
I just added a Loki Mini to my stack, because I wanted to and the Sundara's can take all the EQing you can throw at it. My only complaint from Schiit at this point is those damn wall-warts. They are freaking massive. For the smaller stacks, they should design a wall-wart that can power both the amp and the Loki/Modi at the same time. A dual-rail power supply would be sick. Or even at this point just do an inline power supply so I don't have to rearrange my room when the second wall-wart takes up too much space for me to plug anything in the port next to it on my strip.
Which one's better the outlaw 5000x or the schiit vidar?
I love the intro!
HAHAHAHA I love the opening skit! Keep up the great work!
I wish it had a physical volume dial. LOL
Love watching these Schiit reviews.
$700 and I don't get a volume knob... I have to get a pre amp as well. Why did I get into audio, again?
Finally something that can drive my IEMs!!
shiit, for one minute i really thought that you are josh gates! bravo...
Love the intro :D
Which Emotiva amp did you compare it to? I'd be interested in a Vidar VS A2 comparison. A2 should be pretty good and seems to offer more power for less money.
That said, I have an Emotiva TA-1 and acquired a Vidar from one of my friends. Adding the Vidar to the TA-1 was arguably a bigger upgrade than switching from my little SMSL AD18 to the TA-1 itself. But then, the TA-1's internal amp is under powered and they shot themselves in both feet by poorly implementing the crossover and bass management features.
You got a thumbs up just for the intro!
