Fantastic movie. I keep coming back to this - and several other movies of same type - whenever I am done with modern day streaming content.

I remember visiting my great aunt Martha and watching this movie together with her. She was from Posen. She admitted to me that Posen was more Polish than German but these two peoples lived side by side with each having a patriotic spirit of their own. She went to school in the Prussian system and she was the most well read and spoke the best German of all my relatives who had emigrated. She was also a holocaust denier because she could not believe that Germans were capable of the atrocities of the Holocaust. We watched this film together without me commenting. I never heard her mention Holocaust denial again. It was not just a movie for me and I have always remained grateful for the incredible performances of these men. They opened her heart and her mind to the truth about what had been done by the Nazis in the name of Europe’s German speaking peoples.

It's a great scene and Max Schell is brilliant. A fanatical, unrepentant SS officer who believes he's escaped justice. Most people don't know that Max was Angelina Jolie's godfather.

Schell was a great actor, but Voight is Jolie's father.
The book is excellent. Such a story!

Often wondered what impact this movie had on Jon Voigt as he was a young career actor at this time.

In the book Roshmann was able to escape, and Peter Miller was advised not to pursue him but to instead raise a family.

Probably most SS agreed with him and some German non SS still agree with him.

So, after he reads the concentration camp survivors diary, he chose to be a loose cannon amongst first generation Nazi's. The character of the freelancer in the movie came across to me as being very impatient and stupid as a cue ball. What is worse, he dumps his girl friend at the hands of the Nazi's . The movie has a lot of stupid acts in it, full of holes.
