The junk journals originally were and still are made from paper products most people throw away. Things like bill envelopes, used boxes, advertisements, used bags, etc.
and I collected junk for a long time - and hated it! I finally re-recycled my junk and was amazed how much space I recovered! I tried making true junk journals and found that I wouldn't work in them so it was a waste of time and energy!

Same! Plus, if I make a lot of it and am including antique treasures that I found, I never want to just call it a “junk journal”-alas the algorithm knows the audience that would want to see an altered/handmade journal is also looking up “junk journal,” so I feel like it’s a phrase I have to use.
@@CaterinaGiglio I did see someone call these “handmade journals” since I do visualize junk journals as being primarily junk-still awesome and a fantastic way to recycle and reuse things we find all the time, but I feel like “handmade journal” is awfully broad 😂

Thanks for another wonderful video Cat! Always love seeing and hearing you work. I love that this is not "perfect". Meaning the pages are all different- they stick out. I love that you painted some paper for the book as well. And like you- I have not liked the term junk journal.
What fun !!! I love journal making and you are great at sharing your journal making skills, could be a mini book or a repurposed book cover like this is . So enjoy watching and thanks Cat for sharing your Talent with all us 💖💖💖. Thanks Don for your great filming of this UA-cam video 💖.
I love it ,so interesting and how beautiful ,loved how you repaired the shabby corners Cat and the papers are beautiful ,really looking forward to watching part 2 x
I am just so grateful that as an artist what you share is discussed in art terms. I signed up for kind of a no stress fun little class…and the first teacher immediately, and repeatedly, says she has no idea what the purpose of gesso is. I have to tell you that stopped me in my tracks. I think it says much when an instructor doesn’t care enough to know what is being used or why. And I rather wish we could get away from the term “junk journal” also. So much goes into what is currently being passed as craft has no concern for archival qualities. I guess crafters don’t realize that journals, paintings or other forms of art will one day tell the story of what state we as a people were in in 2021. Or, maybe that not caring describes exactly who we are… Kind of frightening though. Anyway, thank you for being professional in your presentations!
Thank you so much.. yes.. this is exactly the way I feel about the subject and thank you for your comment. I knew I would stir things up.. but that’s ok!
Thanks for addressing the elephant-in-the-room. Finally, I’m facing the fact that I’ve never made a “junk” journal because of the imagery. Nothing junky about this beautiful book you’re creating!
That’s wonderful. I’m in the U.K. so I’m going to be looking for some khaki paper. I’m really inspired by your work. I’ve been for some major surgery and haven’t had the energy to do much but I’m getting better and my craft room is calling. Thank you for this. I loved it. 😊🥰💐
Hello Cat and Don too. So good to see you in the studio....love the book making videos. I will make one in the future. Right now I'm preparing for upcoming classes at my local library! I enjoy your videos very much. You said you have a video on how you are using parchment paper. I saw tracing paper video you dyed but not parchment paper. Do you use them interchangeable or am I just not finding the video? Thanks, Blanche
Hi Cat, what a terrific, huge book this is going to be! Can't wait to see your part 2 on this one. One big question, I could not tell if you said Khadi paper CAN or CANNOT take a lot of abuse and treatment. Because I just LOVED how you added and blotted that black with wax paper.(So I assume it can take a lot of torture?) I learn so many cool techniques thanks to you and Don. Thanks to both of you, for all your instruction and hard work! PS, I do get tired of the title Junk Journal, but guess I'm almost immune to the term now. ;) But I prefer "altered book" or just something else.
Thank you dearheart.. the term Junk is so demeaning to the work.. I agree! No, Khadi will not take a lot of water and paint, it turns to mush. Once you paint it with acrylic.. it will take a bit more abuse. Of course you can gesso it and prime it if you want! 😘
I personally was not familiar with the term “junk” journal when I began making books and journals, but I do not disparage anyone who does use the term. There are many people who do not have access or the means to obtain original papers and supplies. Yet, rather than deny their creative spirit, they use what they have. Yes, words are important, and just as important are attitudes. As artists, let’s encourage and uplift the creative spirit in one another no matter what medium is used.
Did I disparage anyone? I don’t think so.. in fact I am simply trying to get people to understand that what they create … NO MATTER WHAT DISCARDED MATERIALS they use.. is Art. Not Junk!
Hello Caterina Your talent is awesome Thanks for your inspiration and sharing your knowledge. I watched another video and you said that you love Reading historical fiction . Did you read Outlander ? Which book or books are your favorites ? Historical fiction is my Favorite as well !!

@@CaterinaGiglio Yes it comes out Nov23rd two days before my birthday. I don’t think she has said what the last book will be called . I hate to see it all end but i’m sure they would all like to move on . I do love it though ❤️
The reason the books are called Junk Journals is because years ago when making these books they were made out of junk mail. You know back in the late 60's and 70's everyone got a lot of junk mail in our mail boxes. Someone, and I do not know who, but someone decided to make things out of this junk mail instead of throwing it away. Of course books and journals have evolved since then, but the name has not. Great video Cat!!!
Glad you liked the video.. I understand the derivation of the name Junk Journals, however I find the term JUNK demeans art books created with time, love and intention. Thanks so much!
I think that the word junk referes to things that otherwise would be thrown to trash, like food packaging, junk mail etc. I am using old books and i dont call it junk journal, but there were times that i used things like left over mail, food packaging etc, that instead of throwing to the trash, i used them, what you are doing is altered book, junk is not a bad word💚❤️💛s
I am very aware of the reason that people call them junk journals. I use discarded materials in my work, but the end result is art. My motivation is to make people understand that the end result is not junk but art, no matter what they use. Junk means worthless… art means treasure.
Sue - How dare you be critical of a persons speech when they are creating these UA-cam videos, spending their time and energy and creativity for the public's enjoyment and inspiration. How ungrateful of you to make such a nasty comment. I would suggest that you NO longer watch Caterina's videos.
