@@josephsheridan7885 Thanks Joseph 🍻 Yes there are golden trout in the Sierras. They are mainly in the southern sierra's high mountain lakes and feeder creeks. The most well know spot is Cottonwood Lakes where you have to hike to get to it.
Rattlesnakes are plentiful especially in warmer weather. And there a big ones too. I've seen body diameter as big as a human forearm and heads the size of a human fist. Especially in bolder zones. Assume every crack and crevice is home for them. Some years are worse than others.
Awesome view at the start as you were walking down to this Gorge stream, love these waters, great video once again and of course I have hit your thumbs up too 👍 tight lines buddy
You had a great day, the Gorge is tough. Super clear water, skittish fish. I can't believe you didn't spend a little time on the dam and the tunnel? Here's the history on that - The Casa Diablo gold belts trend north to south, and the Owens cut through a deposit, and deposited the gold on those two horseshoe bends. Miners blasted the tunnel and diverted the Owens through it, and then ran sluice boxes. A lot of the big rocks and boulders on those bends are stacked on the inside, contrary to nature. There's actually another adit and mine on the south side of the "fin". Can you imagine being down there when that big column tumbled down (probably during an earthquake)? Holy sh*t! Tight lines.
Sorry Brett, didn't see your comment until know (I got no youtube alert which happens sometimes on older vids). Very intersting history about the middle O! Some of those massive rocks make you think twice about fishing down there. Even a smaller rock coming down can kill you. Very nerve wracking in there!
One of my favorite small waters in the Eastern Sierra. That fish around the 8 minute mark is a trophy for down there. I've caught a few larger than that in the gorge, but only a handful and I've been fishing that place for over 20 years.
I spotted some fairly large fish (18-20" I am guessing) which surprised me. It was toward the end of the day where I was starting to walk up & out when I saw them in a group in a large clear pool when I was fairly high up the hillside. They somehow saw me and spooked for cover. I waited for 10-15 mins for them to come out, but they never did. I thought maybe they could be fish from Pleasant Valley Reservoir, but I am not sure they can make it up from there or not.
@@purpledrakefishing They do travel up from PVR. The biggest fish I've caught in there was just over 20. Anything over 16 in there is pretty solid. I need to get back in there soon, it's been 2 or 3 seasons. I'll be on the lower O tomorrow, but your video has me thinking of switching it up lol.
@@mattstewart2750 I fished the Lower Owens yesterday and the day before and it was fishing great. The fishing picked up after 11am when the bwo's started to come out. Tons of people on Chalk Bluff Road, I would recommend fishing lower down near 5 bridges if you go.
@@purpledrakefishing I'm planning on going down near 5 bridges. Camped out and ready to crash out now. I should start doing some short videos every now and then haha.
With all do respect I just hope it stays a productive fishing area. With videos like these who knows how long places like this will last. I just hope you live here and guide or at least volunteer for clean ups. The local fishing community has been hit hard by over tourism.
@@carter7371 I was worried about that and I wouldn't fish the Gorge when they are out and active later in the Spring & Summer. Luckily I didn't come across any. A bite down there and isolated could be fatal.
@@carter7371 I'm actually shocked that I've never even seen or heard a rattlesnake from upper Owen's all the way to Big Pine. 20 yrs. of fishing the area. Hot, cold, Winter, Spring n Fall. I've been REALLY lucky but I don't get into the gorges very often except Hot Creek on occasion. I'm sure they're out there somewhere..
Thanks JW, I am not too familiar with the Gorge, but from looking on google maps on the satellite image, it looks like there are just 4 access points: upstream from Pleasant Valley Reservoir power station, the "Horseshoe" bend where I got in off of Gorge Rd, the Middle Power Plant Road and the Upper Power Plant Road.
PD is correct on the access points. If you go, be prepared to be there most of a day if not all day. It's super steep in most sections of the canyon. I usually make the run from Horseshoe bend upstream to the middle road like PD did I assume. There are some areas that can be tricky to get through (mountain goat type stuff or deep wading) depending upon the time of year and water flows.
@David Munizza No worries, not a bad question. I had just nicknamed the curved u-shaped section of the river the horse shoe, though I think I have seen it called that in the past on some rock climbing map. The best way to find it is to look on google maps satellite and find the distinctive crooked horseshoe bend in the gorge. You can trace the short dirt road from there to Gorge Road. The turn from Gorge Road is right where the water pipeline that follows Gorge Road goes underground. This about halfway between Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Middle Power Plant on the river.
@@anatoliyzong On google maps with the satellite image selected, you can see the paved road leading down to the power station/dam. The Middle Power Station Road is a turn off from the Gorge Road. I was able to hike out from there, where the road gets close to the river.
Great stuff PD....The brilliance on those browns are nice! Thanks for the vid and the location. Never fished there and always wanted to .... will definitely check it out.
I have moved! Fishing With Drake is the new channel 🍻
Got the old channel back, LOL. I'm back over here now at Purple Drake.
nice fish and nice catch chase him down
I love fishing there so peaceful.
Nice handling of the fish and getting them back into the water quickly.
Thanks 🍻🍻
Are those GOLDEN TROUT THAT YOU CAUGHT?
No, brown trout.

Fisherman are lazy. The hike will limit traffic in the vast majority of the gorge.
Nice dude always wanted to explore down there
I had been wanting to fish the Gorge for years and finally did it. It was amazing down there.
It’s a great spot when you find the good holes. But there are lots of rattlesnakes down there and along the paths leading to it

Did u go back the same way you went in?
I went down the tunnel on the other side of the shoe
No, I hiked out upstream near the middle power plant road. I had to be careful to reach that spot before it got dark.
@@purpledrakefishing so when u go upstream there’s a trail that leads to the middle gorge? It’s hard to locate it on satellite images

Which fishpond net is that?
It is the Nomad Hand Net. fishpondusa.com/nomad-hand-net
Some tough scrambles🤣
Was very sore the next day with some bruises & aches!
Was the hike easy enough to make with wadders on? I am heading there in a couple of weeks and thought I would try the gorge for the first time.
Yes, can make it with waders, wasn't bad at all.
I can see though in the summer that the hike would would be very hard in waders on the way out.
Hey PD thanks for sharing. It looks like an incredible place to fish, and so beautiful. I love to fish there in fall when the fish are FAT.
Agree--that brown at around the 8 min mark needs to bulk up! Would have been an amazing fish to catch down there if it had some beef on it.
Wow, love that hike down to the water. I love to explore water in places like this! Those long torpedo Browns looked great too!
Thanks Eric! It felt like a different world down there, highly recommend it.
I was there a few months ago and didn’t know if I could fish there. Can’t wait to go back and fish this time. Would a zebra midge work there?
Yes, I think it would work well there. Pheasant Tails as well.
