When I use those small spools I watch em closely when they're full, so I can stop before they tangle. once they get down less than 3/4 they usually behave.

My doctor says to wear gloves when I work. I handle the store garbage, and the propane cylinders.

Unfortunately I don't do either. My hands have been without gloves since I was young. I just can't make them work. I own a bunch and just never use them. I cut my hands all the time. But that's what electrical tape is for. The only thing I do wear while I'm working is a face mask if I'm welding. Otherwise nothing.
