really great points here. i think the westernization of the world has made us look at everything with certain assumptions. also that research about french and english music is so cool!

Wow! I was already watching this video for a few minutes when I noticed this only had 500 views. Very high quality video! I think Adam Neely would find this very interesting.

Music is moved by audible experience. So subjective and objective elements.

Great video. 4:05 but people - arts and humanities people especially - have to get away from fetishising "definition". Meaning, in natural language, does not come from definition. Formal definitions (maths, logic, mathematical sciences) is important but always contingent. In arts and humanities "definitions" are never used formally, so what's the point? It's closet essentialism.

I don't disagree with this. As I say, the best definition of music is just 'music is whatever you consider as such'. There's little point in overemphasising a concise, one sentence definition. That being said, one context in which definitions, even in the humanities, are helpful, is in translation/foreign language. It's less that a formal definition is necessary, and more the lack of consensus around the word 'music' to illustrate the broader point: that our understanding of auditory art forms or performances can be limited by the word itself. By and large, though, I agree; formal definitions are not the be-all and end-all of understanding concepts.
