Shannon (born Brenda Shannon Greene,May 2, 1958) is an American singer. She is best known for her 1983 million-selling record, "Let the Music Play". The record re-defined the electro-funk sound that Arthur Baker and John Rocca (who produced "I.O.U" by Freeez) developed in 1982, which would eventually be called freestyle music.
In the spring of 1983, Greene was enrolled at York College and toured with the New York Jazz Ensemble. Quintin Hicks, an associate of the production team of Mark Liggett and Chris Barbosa, later saw Shannon singing with a live band in her cousin's recording studio. Shannon auditioned for Liggett and Barbosa with the song "She Can't Love You Like I Do". They introduced her to the track "Fire and Ice", which would later evolve into Shannon's signature song, "Let the Music Play". This title would also be applied to Shannon's debut album.
In July 1983, the "Let the Music Play" single was released and Shannon was invited back to record more songs with Liggett and Barbosa. The single reached #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard"s United States R&B and Hot Dance and Club Play Chart chart. Today, it is ranked #23 among Billboard's best dance songs of all time.
Her debut album, Let the Music Play, was released in February 1984. The follow-up single from the album was "Give Me Tonight", which hit the top spot on the Hot Dance, Club Play and R&B chart. It also became a significant hit on Urban radio. It was one of Billboard's top 30 dance songs for the year 1985. In the U.S., the third single was "My Heart's Divided", another Latin freestyle track, featuring Jimmy Choo as one of the back up vocalists. "Sweet Somebody", a mid-tempo soul effort, made the Top 20 in Europe.
Let the Music Play went on to sell over 2 million copies worldwide. Shannon was nominated for a Grammy and received numerous other awards, including the Dianah Washington (Jack the Rapper) Award, the Hall of Fame Award, the Gold Ampex Reel Award, a certified gold disc by the Recording Industry Association of America, and the Best Billboard Top 10 female R&B vocalist.
In 1985, Shannon released her second album, Do You Wanna Get Away, which sported a sound similar to that of her debut album. The title track became her third #1 on the Dance charts and became her third hit on the Billboard Hot 100. She scored three more dance hits from the album, including "Stronger Together", a cover of "Urgent" by Foreigner, and "Stop the Noise", with a video sponsored by Pepsi and Black Angus. Her third album was 1986's Love Goes All the Way. This album was not as successful as her previous LPs. Shannon was Executive Producer against all odds.
Shannon asked to be released from her recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1987. She recorded soundtracks and jingles, Criminal", for the movie Fatal Beauty and budweiser . While touring the world, Shannon attended and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
In the late 1990s interest in Shannon rekindled, when VH1 spotlighted her on their One Hit Wonders series. Entertainment Tonight also taped a special about her life. In 1998, she co-wrote and sang on multi tracks produced by Todd Terri, Tony Moran, Germany's Sash Les Rythmes Digitales Les Rythmes Digitales
In 1999, Shannon released her fourth studio album, The Best Is Yet to Come, on which she is credited as 50% writer of the album (contracted by BMG). Chris Barbosa was invited back as a producer, along with Andy "Panda" Tripoli and Tony Moran. A greatest hits album was released in November 2004 without Shannon's knowledge and agreement.
On April 20, 2006, Shannon participated in the Freestyle Extranvaganza concert along with Judy Torres, George Lamond, Cynthia, Lisette Melendez, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, The Cover Girls, Hanson and Davis, Coro, and Stevie B.. The event was sponsored by WKTU, WSKQ, and WCAA in New York.
A fifth studio album, "A Beauty Returns", was released in 2007 without the knowledge and agreement of Shannon.
Today Shannon is a voting member of the Grammy's (Recording Academy) touring the world (Kuwait, Badghdad and Iraq) with the US Soldiers. She is also in the studio working on new hits for the year 2010.

This song is about 40 years old and will be still great in 40 years

nearly exactly 4decades as a matter of fact
Truth. I hope a 13 year old in 2063 sees this post and gives his opinion if the song really did hold up 40 years later
Do you really think you'll be allowed to play this or similar songs in 40 years in the North American China New Foundland? Hell no! You'll be busy studying and mastering mandarin. Remember this was or will be the as a result or the idiots in DC, single parents, rainbow flags, national debt and the young being to stupid. Y'all lack analytical skills. So have a blast if you survive the takeover. Remember four to maximum six years. Enjoy!

The production on this song was way ahead of it's time.
It's a good early example of the Roland TR-808 as well.

Sounds like 1986/1987 not 1983, so 3-4 years ahead its time.
@@KadeSutherland sounds like 3021
I like and all, but hte production is typical 80s. Many of shannons beats were pretty much taken from foreign songs. Her producers clearly were listning to french stuff at the time then taking ideas thinking no one would ever realize it, most evident is the beat and bass in heart divided, its basically paris latino by bondelero. Its undeniable.
This song is still fire in 2020, because it's truly transcendent of time.

80s IS THE BEST DECADE EVER FOR MUSIC
I must respectfully disagree with you Lee. The 1970s had the best music fashion and movies. And let's not talk about the TV shows And sooooooul train🚂
and the 70s
Both 1970s and 1980s are the best decades for music, the best era of music, and are also real music, compared to some most songs we have nowadays since the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.
Also, the 1990s, 2000s, and early 2010s (before 2012) were the best in terms of video games, although don't get me wrong, there are recent games that interest me, but anyways, as mentioned above, nothing will ever beat music from the 1970s and 1980s as those are the best era of music and are also real music, compared to some most songs we have nowadays since the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s.
I guess everybody has their decade, but growing up in the 70s was like magic.Being amazed by those 5 young brothers with afros from Gary Indiana, Every time Muhammad Ali fought you felt he was fighting for us, All in the family, good times, the partridge family, Sanford and son. The godfather, the taking of Pelham 123, godfather part 2, jaws, Shaft, Foxy Brown, Disco, The birth of hip-hop. If there were ever a time where America was great for black people, it was during the 70s🤔

All this AWESOME Music takes me back to GOOD TIMES . . Unfortunately we'll never be that young again . . . So yes, I ENJOY this !! . . I crank it up and my grandkidz are always telling me to turn it down !!💕 LOVE IT !!! 💕❤💕
Who remember challenging people on the dance floor LMAO 😂😂
Wow..iam that song..and that woman..timeless🤩🤩
She is definitely the Queen of her era 👍😍👍👍👍👍🙏
Donna Summer might differ with ya
@@tzackaria7
No Donna Summer was Queen of Disco in the 1970s. Disco expired in 1980.
"Let The Music Play by Shannon" is definitely an iconic jam, no doubt. But, to say Shannon was the Queen of her era is quite a stretch, don't ya think? Seriously, we're talking about the 80's Shannon played a part in. Did you forget about all the other ladies in music who were bringing down the house in the 80's? Like, "Madonna" "Whitney Houston" "Tina Turner" "Janet Jackson" etc... Just saying!
C’mon… I love this song… it was amazing…but she only had 1 real hit… ‘Queen of an era’? Nah…
Beautiful voice, beautiful lady! I just miss the 80s!
I know what you mean the 80s! was much Better
Ha. That rhymed
I miss the pre-autotune talent
Exactly.
We miss it because we remember it selectively. I am sure the people in South Africa do not miss it that much.
I was a 13 yr old black kid from Atlanta in 80s break dancing to this song..🎉😅
Had to be the best time ever
Yessss!!! This is when I fell in love with hip/hop n r&b
I was a little white kid who broke the coffee table while trying to break dance but in the early 90s
I still do breakdance to this song ❤😊
I was 10 years old white kid from Eastern Europe break dancing to this song. ;)
I love her voice, clothes, the song. Pure class
39 years ago this month my wife and I married. Our wedding dance began with a smooth romantic Lionel Richie tune and transitioned into this song and then a Chaka Kahn song. Not a single person was left sitting in their seat. Over 200 people on the rented dance floor having a good time at our wedding and it was this song that lit the place up. Folks still talk about every time they hear this song they think of our wedding. Now if only I were still young enough to dance as I did way back then. The memories will have to suffice :p
Who still rocking to this during quarantine?
Rock on
You know it.
Lol!!! I am tonight.
The real cure for 2019-nCoV!

This song personified the 80's. One of the best generations for music and for general living. I'm so glad I got to grow up generation X.
John Carr me too John
80's , 90's and the beginning of 00',after that music died ....
@@alexandervanpatten100 My theory is American Idol had a lot to do with the decline of music. No proof, just a crazy hunch.
Thanks
And we were all out on the dancefloor having a blast
Bomb timeless hit. Record number of the remixes and covers were recorded! 😇🥰😎

This song is perfection. Every time I hear it, it's like hearing it for the first time. It's absolute gold. The 80s was the best decade ever.

This video was shot in 1983 at the Off-Broadway Entermedia Theatre, 12th St & 2nd Av in NYC. It was a short one day shoot on the cheap, I was the lighting designer. But really, lights were already set for a musical show currently running on that stage, so all I did was turn the board on and bring lights up. :) Shannon was a super nice person, no star attitude. The show running was a musical about aging called Taking My Turn and included Tiger Haynes (original Tin Man in The Wiz) and Cissy Houston (Whitney's Mom.) Whitney was at the theatre many times over the nine months the show ran, but not on the day of this shoot. Also, the same theatre The Talking Heads shot their music concert in '78. Wilson Pickett performed his "comeback concert" there in '80. The theatre is now the Village East Cinema, a 7-plex.
Thanks for sharing! Always cool to hear some behind the scenes stuff!

Right on Raymond! 👍

Another Star who got robbed
Love you Shannon ❤❤❤
I love this song. It's from the 80ies. The last decade with hundreds of songs that will be still heared now and in decades. Quality can never be replaced by hype or advertising. In the early 80ies I had a copy of a vinyl record with breakdance music. This song was included. And we (break) danced to this great song. In additon, what a beautiful woman.
