- 13 years and over 400,000km ago we drove the Patrol off the showroom floor. In this video I talk about some the epic locations we have been to. I also talk about servicing and wear and tear the Patrol has had over that time and what I do to keep it on the road. From clutches to axel seals and what parts I use.

Wicked vid buddy. Appreciate the honesty and genuineness about you. She's a good looking rig. Hope my 2016 has a long and healthy life ahead of her, like yours. Cheers.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m sure you will have many years of trouble free and memorable trips in yours. The next thing I need to do is have the drivers seat refreshed! It’s feeling a bit old. Cheers Richard.
Incredible incredible incredible travels and adventures brother !! inspiring.... I hope to tick some of those locations off 💚💚💚
Thanks Jason, I really hope to continue ticking them off and some even again! There were so many places I forgot too! Iconic spots like to the bottom of Tassie and some lesser known ones such as the geo centre of NSW. Well that might have to be another video. Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it. Cheers
Awesome mate, great insight into where you have been, the patrol has definitely been a good car . Overlaying the photos while you talked was good . Cheers Shad 👍👍
Thanks Shad, it took while to dig those pics up! I could have shared many more too! I had to draw the line somewhere lol
Thanks for sharing. Plan to add a few if those destinations to the list. 👍
Thanks for watching, there sure are some incredible locations to visit.
Nice one, look forward to the next 👍
Thanks for watching Phil, I really didn’t know where to start with this one. Cheers
awesome thanks for sharing mate.
Thanks for watching mate, so many awesome memories!
Loved your vid mate, i also bought an 07 new and did the big lap was just the best 4x4 sadly sold it at 45k BUT! I just got my self another few days ago a 2012 CRD which I'm about to start doing mods for over landing.
I agree with you on servicing is so important and if someone is reading this thinking of buying a used patrol grab the logbook and see it had all its service history, it took me a month to find mine and had an owner that loved the car it never missed a service and all Nissan serviced also no Bullbar or tow bar thing with patrols they make a great tow vehicle and end up towing big vans lots of high EGTs .
EG one yard had just traded a used patrol only done 100k and cracked head I looked at the logbook only had one entry the first 10k service so be picky and you will find the car of your dreams.
thanks for the vid
Great advice, I have all my service history. But I dont see myself moving the Patrol on cor a long.time. There are plenty for sale the right one is always out there. Cheers.
Enjoyed that video its great to have a reliable car to get you to beautiful places and back you have done some amazing trips wish I had time to do some of those. One day.
Thanks for watching Domenic, we have been lucky. Australia sure has it all! Cheers Richard
Still going strong mate, credit to you 👍🏼
Has seen a few camp sites over the journey too 🏕
Cheers Kaine, Thanks for watching, so many campsites plenty of memories .
Good info being new to gu zd 30. Keep on top of servicing is a must
Thanks mate, servicing is the key. Learning to listen and feel what the car is doing too. Cheers
Well done mate, 400K. Cheers Steve
Thanks Steve, it’s got more than that though. 😉
Wow the level of the diary is inspiring.
Most of the diary is in my head lol. I left plenty out. Not on the Patrol side of things but the trips. I forgot lol bout Tasmania, Lightning Ridge just to name a few. We have plans to head back into the centre this year. ...oh well maybe next year.
Great video. We picked up a 2011 model GU.
Nice, there are so,e great ones on the market, plenty to choose from. Cheers
@@OffroadTouringLife there sure is. Even better when you know the owner since new and has the service history.
Good stuff mate, you've made my confidence level soar as I'm constantly copping crap from Toyota drivers and mechanics!! I'm putting in all the good stuff to keep the Patrol doing what she does best for the next 20 years with a bit of luck!! Keep us up to date with your rides triumphs and fails!!
Thanks for watching Peter. Tje patrol was a big part of our family. I did sell it at tje start of tne year. I now have an FJ.
Not once did I ever doubt the patrol, we took it everywhere with confidence.
Why an fj and not another Patrol??
It was time for a change,. I thought I'd try something different. I would definitely get another patrol but its hard to find a good one.
@@OffroadTouringLife Feeling a tad lonely here surrounded by Toyota's............
I grew up with Toyota''s from FJ55' FJ40/45/47 I'm not loyal to one brand. What ever gets you out there. I would have bought a GU ute but i needed the extra seats for a while longer.
My Goldie is 15 years old. had 3 different motors and trans. 5 diffs, 4 spring sets and only has 185k km on it lol. go the patrols!
Plenty of incarnations Vince! It’s now a weapon though! Do you remember that time we bumped into each other Port Augusta? I had bald tyres, cracked windscreen and was on our way ho,e form a 4 month trip!
Offroad Touring Life I should name my patrol Jesus not Goldie haha. yes certainly do remember that !
She looked liked she had a hard few miles when you saw you guys !
It had! Lifelong memories!
Thanks Rich. As always very informative. Some long lasting memories in that rig that's forsure.
Now if you had to buy a NEW 4bee tomorrow what would you get.
Thanks for watching Matt,. We never plenty of great memories. As I right this I’m having the drivers seat reupholstered! It’s pretty worn out. As far as a replacement mmmm it’s a hard one, I think a troopy all decked out like a camper would be cool. But the lack of seats would be an issue. Something like that would be perfect for touring. It’s not going to happen though. A Y62 would be the other one. Cheers
Great video mine hits 450k. Can you do an update on your GU
G’day, that video is fairly recent. Because of the Covid 19 restrictions nothing has changed since that video. Cheers
Hey mate love the channel!
Ever done or thought about rear coil tower bracing? Cheers
Cheers thanks for watching, , I have definitely thought about it more then once. To be honest I’m not sure why I haven’t done it yet. I do keep a close eye on the towers though.
Frkn tensioner pulleys! Get the online auto parts one for quarter the price then get the local bearing shop to put new bearing in and if possible have a spare pulley cog thingy
You can! It's a great idea.
Great video, I'm looking to setting up a tourer and its nice to hear some long term, sensible feedback. Have you got a rough cost on your servicing?
Cheers, there are so many options when setting up a tourer. If I was to add something I thing it would be Emu Wing lift up sides for the rear window area. But it’s not a necessity at this stage. As for the servicing cost, I’d hate to think how much I have spent. But when something needs replacing I get it done pretty much straight away. Thanks for watching. Cheers Richard.
About to hit 300,000 on my 4.2 2000 GU. Just warn in
That’s awesome mate!
My 2000 model GU ZD30 has 470k on it and still running strong.
Awesome Steve, there sure are a few getting around with high kms on them.
@@OffroadTouringLife mine has been great, all my services are done every 7k and I do a soot clean and intercooler flush every 70k.
It sounds like a whole winning. combination you have going on.
@@OffroadTouringLife yeah definitely.
My trusty GUIII 2004 with 415K on it still going strong. LOL @ Fuel low, dude, fuel comes from the bottom of the tank anyway, regardless of fill level.
Thanks for watching Ben. Yep, I'm not changing my fill time.
My 1HD-FTE is about to turn 400,000
Awesome, is yours also a one owner?
@@OffroadTouringLife 2 owner
Hey mate, great video. What motor is it running?
G’day, it’s a ZD30Di. Cheers
whats the fuel economy like with the zd30? highway and around town? great video!
G’day, I’m getting around 11 -12 , it doesn’t change much between hwy and around town. For. Fairly heavy car I think it’s pretty good. Thanks for watching. Cheers
So this is a 3L?
Nice! Any particular oil brand you stick to during services?
No particully
I might have missed it but what about wheel bearings (front ones). How often have you replaced and or repacked the grease?
G’day Nick, They are repacked ect every 40k but inspected regularly when serviced. . I did have an issue a few years ago with the left side coming loose. I replaced the locking plate with another OE spec one as a very small groove was in it. Once replaced I have never had a problem again. Thanks for watching. Cheers Rich
@@OffroadTouringLife cheers appreciate the quick response
How often do you drop the oil? My ZD30 CRD is up to 225,000 and *touch wood* has been brilliantly reliable to me. I try and drop the oil every 5,000 or every 6 months, but when I’m doing a lot of touring I can easy rack up 5,000 in 2-3 months as it’s also my daily and I do 100km a day return for work, so occasionally I go 8,000 between changes
G’day Ashley, I service mine every every 9-10k. But I do all filters each time. It’s sure easy to rack up the kms quick. Mine is a daily driver too mine is all fresh ready for when can head out again.
Thanks for watching.
Cheers
Rich
Ashley, my ZD bought new in 04 also has 400k on it. Strongly advise inlet manifold and throttle body clean every 100k on top of regular service. Touch wood, still going strong with no major problems at all, loads of touring and also daily drive. Hope that helps.
Do u service your car every 10k or 5k? plus, what about your Boost pressure then - do u monitor it? Have u also blanked off your EGR?
Gday Rob, services are done every 10k. I mentioned the fuel filter in the video. I would do that every service pretty much. I have no idea about what boost I don't have a gauge fitted. No dawes or tillex fitted either. I have never had a egr block. Thanks for watching. Cheers
How did you find the patrol compared to the hilux with off road and power on road?
Offroad the Patrol is so good compared to the Hilux. On the power of the Hilux was lacking in hilly terrain.
@@OffroadTouringLife was its a turbo or non turbo hilux?
it was a non turbo hilux
@@OffroadTouringLife yeah pretty sure a dirt bike has more power then a na hilux
If my pathfinder takes me half that many places I’ll be wrapped
We have been very lucky, I had a big trip planned last year but that went out the window. Lifelong memories in that car! Thanks for watching and start planning!
What oil do you use?
Super Diesel Valvoline
@@OffroadTouringLife Thanks Richard
