My hardest sail yet

  • After sailing around Kauai for a few weeks, I had a decent weather window to get back to my home port, Oahu. I faced strong currents, 30-knot winds, and rough seas. I then document some of my more random adventures on the island of Oahu.

She has always been a wet boat. Water tank vents used to leak when healed over. Used to be Ariel of Pemaquid Harbor Maine. We owned her for about six years years.

Hi Garret, congratulations on your choices, your wonderful Nor'Sea 27, on your decision to 'throw off your bowlines', as Mark Twain put it. 'Twenty years from now you will more regret the things you didn’t do, than the ones you did do. So sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.'
That was my motto for about 20 years, while working very hard. This sentence kept my dream alife. And then, at the age of 57, I indeed threw off my bowlines. Crossing the atlantic ocean twice. But in a bit bigger boat. 37 feet of steel. And now I bought a boat very similar to yours. Allegro 27, double ender, built 1977 in Sweden, small and seaworthy. And love it. But still some leaks...😄. Will get a "windpilot pacific light' windvane selfsteering this winter. Next year England and Irland, the following year hopefully the Azores again.

Three things could reduce your lean. Take the outboard below deck. The propane tank, too. A hanking jib instead of a rolling furler reduces a lot of weight and drag aloft. You can also drop it in a storm and remove the jib rapidly to stitch repairs or store it out of the sun. You might consider storm sails if you don't have a pair. I like a previous post that I can watch your channel instead of doing chores.

Brown coolant indicates a crack in the cooling system. When transmission fluid mixes with coolant it will look mocha colored. The passage did not look to terrible from Kauai 😊👍🏻

@@garrettsadventure Wicked 😢 it’s definitely a test, more so on the captain then the vessel. Almost better to do it in a gale then with lighter winds. I maintained about 5.5 knots 1st reef in and anywhere from 6-12’ just forward of the beam and gust up to 40. The wife did not enjoy it to mich😅.
