This video has been my biggest project so far as of making this channel. It took me all week to record and edit it but by far the biggest challenge was the copyright. Predictably this video has been claimed, and I’m fine with that. What I’m not fine with is the video being blocked worldwide. It took a few tries but here we are, so if you notice any odd cuts or things of that nature- it is because of that. In addition some of the pictures used early on (for the 1960s section) are low quality. This is just unavoidable and even certain elements later in the video have pixels (a result of repeated rendering due to miscellaneous copyright hotfixes). There is also a section around an hour in where the audio went haywire for a little while and I have no idea why. My apologies for all that. But with that said, I hope you all enjoy the video. It’s my first time ever trying to make something this big and I hope it can entertain you. Trust me it annoys me too and if I could remove it, I would but it had to be in there if I wanted to upload the video. With 2:28:50, I always saw him going between the fan blades as PERFECT timing, as his brain is like a supercomputer. You can see him step forwards literally at the perfect moment to get through. It also explains why he didn't do that from the start, as you can see how afraid he was of doing it. It took all of his focus and he still barely made it. It's one of my favourite scenes with the Ninth Doctor.
Came here to comment the exact same thing, I’m glad someone else got this, it’s like when the 12th doctor slows down time in his mind to think incredibly fast
Oh I am actually this person haha. When I don't think I'd enjoy watching a series, I watch someone excitably talk about it / explain it! This probably is the briefest one could make an explanation of DW. I tried telling my friends about it once, took me a couple hours a day for two weeks. I applaud you.
I didn't see the video length before clicking on the video and did a double-take seeing this video was ALMOST FIVE HOURS. Your narration is really fun, I love your editing, your passion for the show shines and I have a bunch of Classic Who episodes I want to watch and New Who episodes I want to rewatch. I also appreciate your take on the Timeless Child, any other Doctor Who video of this length that discussed it would be burning Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall at the stake.
thank you so much and abt ttc i try and keep an open mind and be unbiased towards all of doctor who. it would be unfair to hold one particular episode to an unfair standard when others do the exact same thing and sometimes worse. Basically, I love doctor who lol
First i got hit by the fact that the great intelligence was around since the second doctor. Only to get hit by the fact that the living plastic has existed since the third doctor. I've watched Dr Who all my life but i grew up with New Who. I did not know until now that the living plastic in Rose were Old Who monsters.
I'm not sure if it's mentioned here (haven't made it five hours yet, just started a half hour ago) but there are several spinoff VHS movies about the plastic Nestene in the 90s, referred to as Autons lol
I never got into Dr. Who (Tom Baker era) but now that I am a huge David Tennant fan (because of Good Omens) I want to start watching it. Thank you for this synopsis.
That's the exact same reason I'm getting into Doctor Who as well! My Good Omens hyperfixation turned into a David Tennant hyperfixation and now that's going to turn into a Doctor Who hyperfixation, but I'm putting off watching Doctor Who because I know that if I end up really liking it then it will take over my entire life and I can't afford to fail 11th grade
@nerdiwolverine if you're like that then you may even end up finishing the modern series and watching the classic and then moving on to the innumerable audiobooks haha it's turned into far too large a hobby for me but there's never been anything I liked before that has had so much content that I can stay interested day after day for a very long time haha
Finally went back and finished watching all of the first doctor episodes because of this video, and almost finished the second doctor now! Very grateful to you for making this
Why does he hate 11? I’m still new to the series and have only watched most of Peter capaldi doctor and am starting on season 1 of new who. So I’m very confused.
@@johnmcwick1 I think it's a love-hate relationship instead of just full on hate because I see his tone when he downplays Matt Smith as rather playful and joking, but who knows.
I always find it funny how the chameleon circuit is always broken, yet everything else in the TARDIS changes almost every time a new doctor is introduced Maybe the tardis itself has a kink with police boxes and just doesnt want to change its exterior (the tardis did seem kinda kinky in 11's run)
I always loved Clara because she’s not perfect, and repeatedly makes mistakes, but she is still considered worth everything to the doctor. Their devotion to each other and it’s consequences are my favorite parts of their run. I was one of those people who was enamored by the Rose/Ten romance but I’ve also enjoyed everything since. Capaldi charmed me immediately and is my favorite doctor. But yeah, justice for Clara, let her be important!! I can’t really name a doctor or companion I dislike tbh. Incredible video!!
i have never watched an episode of dw, but I sure as do love extremely long video essays on topics i know nothing about! just a little comment for the algorithm
Not done with this yet but first of all, I was so excited to see a 5 hour doctor who video on my feed, and second, I love and completely agree with your defense of Colin Baker!! He clearly had such a fun time playing the Doctor even though his production years were so rough. Your inclusion of that sweet phone call with a young fan really emphasizes that!!
What I've been looking for forever! I'm only about half an hour in but I can tell how much time and effort you've put into it, and I love your lighthearted tone and non-dry non-boring non-monotone voice! What a memory you have! Thank you for this! Such perfect timing.
this video singlehandedly got me through the entirety of modern who for the first time, i dropped out in like 2015 partway through matt smith, and only managed a handful of capaldi eps bc i didn't like or get clara (sobbed over her this time) i found this video and decided to stop when i hit stuff i didn't remember and whenever i got unmotivated from DW i would give myself whatever snippet i'd caught up to and now i can finally finish the whole thing! also very very grateful for your positivity about jodie whitaker, bc i was pretty dubious bc of the general reputation, but i ended up really enjoying her whole storyline and definitely wouldn't have gotten through it without your videos looking forward to staying caught up on you and DW
i came in with a lot of my own opinions about the newest stuff having not seen any of classic who and this really helped show that the way the show was presented and the canon maintained has changed a lot over the years and will continue to change in the future. I was already excited for new stuff to come but honestly you're right, theres nothing worth getting worked up for as its all in service of a big story that we're all enjoying together and as long as we support it there will always be more stories to tell
Fan since 1987 here... enjoying this. Just jumped in the comments to say starting a brief ;) explanation of DW with THE PILOT is brave, sir! Glad to see people are still discovering the brilliance of this show from alll the way back.
The Space Museum is my favorite First Doctor story. It’s by no means the best one, but it feels like they were having a ton of fun. That little Dalek gag is just so happy and fun in a way that makes me smile so hard.
This is an incredible video! I can't imagine how time-consuming this project was, but there was no compromising on quality even once. I hope it gets so much more recognition than it has so far. It deserves every bit!
dude I feel so grateful to have stumbled onto your channel and this video! You have a clear talent, you are very entertaining and love the way you speak about the show. Your knowledge of doctor who is UNMATCHED and love to hear your thoughts on all various storylines and creative choices of this show over the last 60 years. Hope you can find an excuse to make more long form content about who because this was brilliant :) you rock and can't wait to see this channel grow!
Never thought would ever watch a 5 hour video, yet here I am. This was a Master class (pun intended). My theory, pure head-cannon, on Doctor Who retcons is that certain events are in flux as the Doctor says. So, as the Doctor and others travel through time and space changing things, time is constantly being rewritten. Now I you could come back with dozens of “fixed events” that have been retconned, but I try not to think too hard about it and ruin my suspension of disbelief. So whenever I notice a retcon I just tell myself, “It must have been in flux”.
2:26:05 Thank you for this It's so difficult trying to explain to people who weren't watching at the time that Series 1 wasn't even definitely a continuation At the time reboots were all the rage and this for many was treated as such
@@dwfan91- Yeah to be fair I guess it's quite hard to believe looking back. But the idea of a show just coming back after 16 years wasn't really done especially something like Doctor Who _Maybe a sitcom or something with BBC alumni but definitely not a sci fi show_ This is one of the reasons why The Doctor's age makes no sense because at the time the people writing didn't see it as 100% a continuation till they did.
This is honestly amazing thank you so much. I'm new to Doctor Who, currently watching through with a friend and we're on series 11 with Jodie, hoping to catch up before the 60th. We've only seen the reboot series starting with Eccleston and I've been wanting to hear about everything pre-reboot but could never bring myself to go through the 40+ years of content from before then
The one and only critique i have about this outstanding video essay is, taking into account all the changes that needed to be made to avoid copyright etc.... you kept putting massive blocks of clarifying text in for less than half a second, any time i tried to read them it would take me 3 or 4 attempts to pause it at the right time, each failure id have to rewind it by 10 seconds cause I'm on mobile and it's just very very difficult to do! And it would be something genuinely interesting as well which isn't said in your breakdown haha.. if you're putting lots of text on screen give enough time to read it or at least up long enough to pause in time!! Thank you for making this though it's a fantastic summary :)
will forever be so so pissed at peter capaldi's reception oh my god. his era was genuinely the best, both character and story wise, and an amazing performance by him in every single episode to boot. peter's literally way hotter than 10 and 11 too, so there's that lol
That was epic. Thanks so much for the immense effort that must have taken. I had huge gaps in my knowledge of Classic Who, so this filled them in nicely. Well done - and thanks!
Great video so far, I’m at the series 3 finale and I just wanted to add a correction. The TV show never confirms that the crispy master is the same incarnation and most sources that do cover that topic, including audios, say he’s a separate incarnation and that Delgado was the 12th Master. It’s nebulous to the point where I’d argue you can convincingly say Delgado and crispy are separate incarnations with just the TV show’s canon considering they act so differently, but yeah. Really enjoying the video so far
I’d say it’s iffy but in the comics they do show a direct storyline of the Delgado Master becoming the Pratt/Beevers Master so I’m inclined to believe it but I know what you mean
i just spent 5 hours watching this and omg it was so worth it. I loved your presentation and humour so much, and your knowledge of the show is second to none. ik im gonna revisit this video alot, this is going in my playlist of favourite doccy who videos of all time.

This is the best thing I've ever listened to; I love the commentary, the pictures, EVERYTHING! Literally listened to this as I was doing my baking lab; best thing ever!
It makes me so irrationally happy how many people are willing to sit down for a five hour explanation of the lore of Doctor Who. The fact that we didn't even hesitate or question if we could be doing anything better is simultaneously awesome and insane. Also, your commentary is hilarious, and I'm here for it. I haven't even watched Doctor Who in like three years. I'm not even a hardcore fan. I still watched this video. Applause dude. Applause. This is so nerdy. I love it so much. Peace out y'all. I'm gonna go watch Doctor Who now.
I put this video on randomly to help me pass the time with a big project at work this afternoon but I loved it so much I ended up watching it all in one go, carrying my iPad around whilst I cooked and did chores after work ended. It's a really, really great video - you have a brilliant presenting style and I love how you mixed the lore of the show with what was happening behind the scenes to explain it, which is something I've never really looked into. I'm looking forward to going through your other videos tomorrow and also to your future releases :) Also, a fellow Twin Dilemma enjoyer! I knew there had to be more of us!

I just watched nearly five whole hours of someone talking about Doctor Who... I feel like my understanding of this series has both grown substantially and shrunk to the point where I still have no idea what's going on.
If it makes you feel any better, no one understands Doctor Who completely. This is just the perfect example of the phenomenon of "the more you know, the less you know"
i just want to say that this video was really good, and you have a great sense of humour. If you ever decided to cover (parts of) the EU you would probably become my favourite youtuber (even if you just cover the 8th doctor, since his EU stories were canonised in the night of the doctor). just one point of note: you say there is no 40th anniversary special, but big finish had Zagreus as the 40th special, which you can say a lot about, but you can't deny that it's special.

So glad I found your channel! This was such a treat to watch and I learned a lot, I can’t even imagine how long this must have taken. Super excited to see more of your work in the future.
As a foreigner to Doctor Who Universe this was well explained. Many years ago I got a very similar timeline at my friend’s 16th birthday. What began as casual conversation with her British born mother who was school aged when season 1 aired. Our cake convo, soon became a family white-board lesson. It was a 2 day affair; which was beautiful bc I’m an auditory learner. My friends British family really were passionate and it was almost heavenly ordained to witness their deep dive in generational lore. Overwhelming yes but they were ready. 😅
This is TO GOOD! I had no knowledge about Doctor Who, never heard of it before, and then I came upon David Tennant and then doctor who and then this AMAZING "short" explanation. This is too good and I really appreciate it so very much. You are so cool (and a nerd) and I LOVE IT
I always thought the 8th Doctor told that guy he was half human because he was newly regenerated and had that half-mad quirkiness. I never took it seriously, because it was written as a comedic line.

I think that this was the perfect proper introduction to Doctor Who. Thank you for making this, and for not skimping details. Your passion for the show/story made it fun to watch, I especially appreciate you including the behind the scenes context along the way. I think I've now learned everything I wanted to know about in Doctor Who (and a lot more, lol). So more than anything, thank you for saving me hundreds of hours of trying to watch through the entire thing. My to watch list is already long enough, so being able to get the story explained in only 5 hours is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for making this. It's really great to listen to as background sound while drawing and I like seeing the show from the point of view of a current fan. I myself fell off the bandwagon half-way through the Capaldi era but you make me want to check out the coming season as well as the classical series.
This is such an amazing video; thank you so much for sharing! I like how you gave some well-reasoned analysis of the series, and delved into some interesting topics. It's also great to see a UA-camr give a fair and balanced assessment of the Thirteenth Doctor's era (pretty sure you are the first UA-camr I've seen who didn't just rant for hours about the Thirteenth Doctor's era apparently destroying the show). Also, I absolutely agree that Benton is the best character in the show. You have excellent taste.

I could listen to your in depth anylisis of every episode i swear. This video is so well put together, even better then the more popular channels! I quite literally havent zoned out even once in all the five hours
Beautifully done... made even better by the fact that we seem to agree on so many points..The Pertwee seasons being my favorite.. I particularly appreciate your love for the more ridiculous characters like Alpha Centauri (actually a hermaphrodite), Meglos, the Dinosaurs etc though I am still waiting for someone to give some video love to the finale dance of The Gravis and most importantly of all a deep dive into the sublime 'Whats That' monster from Frontier in Space and isnt it possible that that haters of the Nucleus of the swarm just dont get its ridiculous magnificence.. yes please to videos delving into The Dalek Master Plan and Death to the Daleks.. Thank you muchly for 5 hours of fun..who could ask for more... I did see the original Power of the Daleks as a small child and it inspired so many nightmares I needed to see a psychiatrist..who got me to draw a picture of a snowman..it didnt help...have never totally recovered, there is still a chill of recognition whenever they appear...

@variaxi935 i was born in the early 2000s.
Ain't no way would i have known about these VHS XD
@@vvgirl6173they were talking about if it was mentioned in the video. They were just sharing a fun fact
how is this not more well known? its so well put together? love this definitely earned a sub and deserve many more!!
Thank you so much!
I've come to the comments to say the same thing. Subbed as well
I never got into Dr. Who (Tom Baker era) but now that I am a huge David Tennant fan (because of Good Omens) I want to start watching it. Thank you for this synopsis.
Don’t skip 9! 😁
DEFINITELY DONT SKIP 9
Very grateful to you for making this
My boy 11 out here being slandered
its a shame or is it.........
Why does he hate 11? I’m still new to the series and have only watched most of Peter capaldi doctor and am starting on season 1 of new who. So I’m very confused.
@@johnmcwick1it's complicated...
@@johnmcwick1 I think it's a love-hate relationship instead of just full on hate because I see his tone when he downplays Matt Smith as rather playful and joking, but who knows.
I always find it funny how the chameleon circuit is always broken, yet everything else in the TARDIS changes almost every time a new doctor is introduced
Maybe the tardis itself has a kink with police boxes and just doesnt want to change its exterior (the tardis did seem kinda kinky in 11's run)
I literally havent seen nor thought of Doctor Who in probably 5 years and yet i love this stuff it might get me to get back into Doctor Who
LETS GO
i have never watched an episode of dw, but I sure as do love extremely long video essays on topics i know nothing about! just a little comment for the algorithm
thank you :)
Well it has 10x that now and randomly showed up in my recommended a year later
Not done with this yet but first of all, I was so excited to see a 5 hour doctor who video on my feed, and second, I love and completely agree with your defense of Colin Baker!! He clearly had such a fun time playing the Doctor even though his production years were so rough. Your inclusion of that sweet phone call with a young fan really emphasizes that!!
What I've been looking for forever! I'm only about half an hour in but I can tell how much time and effort you've put into it, and I love your lighthearted tone and non-dry non-boring non-monotone voice!
What a memory you have!
Thank you for this! Such perfect timing.
this is probably the most enjoyable doctor who video ive ever watched
thank you so much
this video singlehandedly got me through the entirety of modern who for the first time, i dropped out in like 2015 partway through matt smith, and only managed a handful of capaldi eps bc i didn't like or get clara (sobbed over her this time)
i found this video and decided to stop when i hit stuff i didn't remember and whenever i got unmotivated from DW i would give myself whatever snippet i'd caught up to and now i can finally finish the whole thing!
also very very grateful for your positivity about jodie whitaker, bc i was pretty dubious bc of the general reputation, but i ended up really enjoying her whole storyline and definitely wouldn't have gotten through it without your videos
looking forward to staying caught up on you and DW
To be fair this explaination is only 0.67% of the actual run time so it is fairly brief 👍
i came in with a lot of my own opinions about the newest stuff having not seen any of classic who and this really helped show that the way the show was presented and the canon maintained has changed a lot over the years and will continue to change in the future.
Glad to see people are still discovering the brilliance of this show from alll the way back.
a brief comprehensive video guide thats 5 hours long is of dr who is literally EVERYTHING ive ever wanted bro ur AMAZING
It deserves every bit!
thank you so much
dude I feel so grateful to have stumbled onto your channel and this video! You have a clear talent, you are very entertaining and love the way you speak about the show. Your knowledge of doctor who is UNMATCHED and love to hear your thoughts on all various storylines and creative choices of this show over the last 60 years. Hope you can find an excuse to make more long form content about who because this was brilliant :) you rock and can't wait to see this channel grow!
this is the kindest comment ive ever gotten🥲 thank you so much man, it means a lot for real
I think thats my headcanon too :)
2:26:05 Thank you for this
It's so difficult trying to explain to people who weren't watching at the time that Series 1 wasn't even definitely a continuation
At the time reboots were all the rage and this for many was treated as such
Even some people in this comment section don't understand this, it's very true
@@dwfan91- Yeah to be fair I guess it's quite hard to believe looking back.
But the idea of a show just coming back after 16 years wasn't really done especially something like Doctor Who
_Maybe a sitcom or something with BBC alumni but definitely not a sci fi show_
This is one of the reasons why The Doctor's age makes no sense because at the time the people writing didn't see it as 100% a continuation till they did.

Goddamn, I really want a video about the EU. You’re such a good narrator, mate, and the EU isn’t valued enough…
i second this!! i don't know anything about the EU but i would still watch it!
10/10 would definitely watch this
What's the EU
@@superhamz7 Extended Universe. Things like audio dramas, books, games, comics, etc. DW has a ridiculous EU it’s so much fun
will forever be so so pissed at peter capaldi's reception oh my god. his era was genuinely the best, both character and story wise, and an amazing performance by him in every single episode to boot. peter's literally way hotter than 10 and 11 too, so there's that lol
yess, he'll always be my favourite doctor
Ark in Space also has Lovecraftian elements, which is also HIGHLY present in Alien. Doctor Who borrowed a nice bit from Lovecraft over the years.
you're 100% right, especially the hinchcliffe holmes era
That was epic. Thanks so much for the immense effort that must have taken. I had huge gaps in my knowledge of Classic Who, so this filled them in nicely. Well done - and thanks!
Thank you!
@@dwfan91-there is the right doctor novel where the Delgado master is made crispy and Susan then travels around in his TARDIS.
What an incredible video! Thank you so much for this; your dedication and passion for the show really shines through
This is one of the best UA-cam videos of all time. This is exactly what I would’ve wanted when I was watching classic in 2020.
i just spent 5 hours watching this and omg it was so worth it.
I loved your presentation and humour so much, and your knowledge of the show is second to none.
ik im gonna revisit this video alot, this is going in my playlist of favourite doccy who videos of all time.
I truly wish you get the recognition that you deserve, this is a very well made video. I am going to be watching this in 30 minute blocks for the next few days!
I’ve finished this beats. You have me days of entertainment outside of work and life responsibilities, thank you for the laughs, and the memories
It’s nice to know my folder of 152 doctor who edits is justified.
I feel like this would appeal more to us devoted fans than people who want a serious explanation
I'm a half hour into this video and I'm so glad I found it. I've been wanting to learn more about Classic Who, and your editing and narration is perfect, I'm fully invested and loving learning all these origins and lore.
you deserve way more attention man, very well made video!
thank you!
This is the best thing I've ever listened to; I love the commentary, the pictures, EVERYTHING! Literally listened to this as I was doing my baking lab; best thing ever!
I have finally met a fan who is as passionate about this show as I am
put this video on to sleep but its too interesting now i'm wide awake and watching attentively. damn you
😂
Thank you so much that means a lot🙏 also W🤝
okay this is awesome. i can’t wait to get through all of it. obviously a lot of love has been put into it and i hope you get some more recognition for it!!!!
I may be late, but the youtube algo really wants me to reenter my whovian phase, so this came at the perfect time for me. Incredible work here, thanks for the content
I just watched nearly five whole hours of someone talking about Doctor Who... I feel like my understanding of this series has both grown substantially and shrunk to the point where I still have no idea what's going on.
If it makes you feel any better, no one understands Doctor Who completely. This is just the perfect example of the phenomenon of "the more you know, the less you know"
I love finding impossibly long video essays! My Friday night is sorted 😂
Could be wrong, but I think this guy likes Dr Who
i just want to say that this video was really good, and you have a great sense of humour. If you ever decided to cover (parts of) the EU you would probably become my favourite youtuber (even if you just cover the 8th doctor, since his EU stories were canonised in the night of the doctor). just one point of note: you say there is no 40th anniversary special, but big finish had Zagreus as the 40th special, which you can say a lot about, but you can't deny that it's special.
also, if the big finish stories are canon, then the Lumiat explains how Missy survives
do not worry the 'brief' explanation of dr who EU is in the works. Don't expect it any time soon though maybe in like a month lol
So i googled "Dr Who explained to people who didn’t watch Dr Who" and now im here.
Will update in 5 hours.
You did not update in five hours

I never took it seriously, because it was written as a comedic line.
well i hope you can be that forgiving to the timeless child😂
@@dwfan91- I can live with the timeless child, doesn't really change much. I was more pissed that all the Time Lords got killed off-screen, AGAIN.

Best Classic Who analysis I’ve seen on UA-cam. Great job. You got my sub! ❤
I've never watched an episode of Doctor Who, but I have had a vague knowledge built over years of being around Doctor Who fans. Bits of trivia here and there, but not much else.
Thank you!
well fuckin done. doctor who is a childhood show for me. my older sister who isn’t here anymore showed me Starting with David Tennant and i’ve been rewatching some matt smith episodes. just to remember my time watching it with her. that’s for the breakdown. i’ll talk to her about this one day.
I love that you made a 5 hour video and called it brief! I'm not very far in yet, but looks great so far!
My favorite part of Doctor Who is when Doctor Who says "its doctor who time" and doctor whos all over time
Thank you for making this.
Thanks for the short video, I watched it this morning before school! (I stayed up all night)
Just had an idea, the doctor who episodes are not lost, just about 60 lightyears away.. we have to build a wormhole to travel faster than light and then go and fetch the signal and record it :) Who knows how good the signal is, but hey, might be able to reconstruct it.
Sounds like my kinda plan
Thank you....that was the only time I have EVER spent 5 hours of my life watching you tube... admittedly I broke it into 2 stretches but it was well worth the time I would normally consider wasted...thank you and well done.
