My Grandfather was born in 1913. In 1926, his family were cotton sharecroppers in Arkansas. It's literally some of the most back-breaking work there ever was. My Grandpa one day, had all of it he could stand, and ran away from home. He swam across the Arkansas River into Oklahoma, then made his way to California by hopping trains. His first job when he finally reached California was to work for a gang of counterfeiters. He was 13 years old at the time. He told me stories about when the Depression hit in '29. Things that would curl your hair. But the South did all pull together, as best we could. I think it's why we're still here today. Loved your insight, and reaction so much!
It was about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl -- the result of years of drought. When "Daddy got a job with the TVA" that was the Tennessee Valley Authority, That was a government problem stated in 1933 to modernize the South by providing electricity, building dams, etc. It also provided much needed jobs during the depression.
Brother you have to do "40 Hour Week" by Alabama, as well as "Roll on" " Old Flame" and "Can't Keep a Good Man Down." Great band from a great state. ROLL TIDE!
Dust Bowl and the Depression! My parents were newlyweds in Oklahoma at the time. It's always come home to me, that in this song, while it tells of the despair and struggle, and the loss of the family farm, it also tells of moving to town, having a little more prosperity (getting a washing machine and a Chevrolet). It's a great song. Oh! and for the British among us, "Well, shut my mouth!" is a Southern expression of surprise. : )
The song depicts the Dust Bowl of the 1930's in the midwest states which happened to coincide with the 1929 stock market crash and the following Great Depression years. These folks weren't in the stock market but the combined effects (Dust Bowl and Great Depression) were enough to starve them out.
The difference is that the South was already very poor as a result of Reconstruction. Like this song says, “somebody told us Wall Street fell but we were so poor we couldn’t tell.” This time period majorly affected my family in the Midwest and it certainly didn’t help the South but the South was poor back then because of Reconstruction. It didn’t make much of a difference to them because they were already so poor.
You nailed this. This is exactly how it happened in the South. American's will always join together and keep going. And in the South, love eating their Sweet Potato pie.
I loved your reaction. I grew up in Alabama, and I learned how to pull together with family to get through hard times. That's what this song is all about😀
I have been a HUGE FAN OF THE BAND ALABAMA FOR FORTY YEARS ever since they first appeared on the scene. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND AND SUGGEST that you play the following songs: 1) Feels So Right; 2) Mountain Music; 3) Tennessee River and The Mountain Man; 4) Why Lady Why; 5) Love at Twenty Paces; and 6) My Home"s in Alabama. I have been listening to The Group Alabama sine the Early 1980's and I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ENJOY listening to their music. Listening to their music reminds me of my days in High School and College and brings back a lot of fond memories. I am so very very happy that you are enjoying this music from the group Alabama.
Another Legends Country group is The Oak Ridge Boys. Check out their song Elvira and of course Home Free did their version/cover, along with them. I think that you would enjoy those for sure. Keep on keeping!
I live(all my life)just outside of Oak Ridge. The Oak ridge boys are a big source of pride here.Oak Ridge boys in one side of me and Dolly Parton on the other.
It's a great and beautiful area! In fact, I'm a Rome, Georgian, but I absolutely LOVE the beautiful, friendly state of Alabama! My parents were born and raised on farms in Centre and Gadsden, not far from Ft. Payne. In fact, the farm my Mom grew up on now forms part of the bed of Lake Weiss! My absolute favorite place in Alabama is Noccalula Falls State Park! Take care and God bless!
Alabama is the greatest country band of all time. They have over 40 #1 hits and dominated country radio in the 80s and 90s. They won Entertainer of the Year and Group of the Year multiple times. They were named Entertainer of the Decade for the 90s. The three singers are cousins from Ft. Payne, Alabama and the drummer is from South Carolina. Please react to more of Alabama's music.
There's just something great about america. It has had its flaws but people here are incredible, the culture promotes meritocracy and hard work and americans always find a way out to make the country better. It doesn't matter if you're a liberal or conservative, democrat or republican we all have this nation and we have to come together to make sure this nation doesn't fall.
Thank you for that I haven’t heard that song in a long time. I am from Alabama so it’s kind of special to me. You were correct there were many references to the Depression. “Shut my mouth”. Is a saying in the old south that we say when we receive surprising news from someone.
I love your reactions! Thank you for your respect. And btw, I saw you look puzzled at the mention of sweet potato pie. It's kind of like pumpkin pie ... but with sweet potatoes. I lived in England for awhile when I was young, so I know cuisine can be quite different between us! Two words ... blood pudding. 🤣
One of my first concerts was Alabama in 1986 at the Tacoma Dome just outside of Seattle Washington. I asked my Grandma about how the depression affected them in Southern Idaho at the time. My British brother, great reaction! And you got it exactly right! From the War Between the States and the Reconstruction Years to decades onward with the Great Depression and other things, the South had more than its share of hardships and setbacks. But we came together and rose up! I'm from the great State of Georgia in "Dixie" (an affectionate term for the Southern USA) and proud of it! I'm Southern born, and Southern bred; and when I die, I'll be Southern dead!
I have the best story about Alabama!!! My dad was stationed in Myrtle Beach before going to Vietnam. He saw Alabama at the Bowery before they were famous!! They Were the house band ! We vacation in Myrtle Beach every year and we go with dad to the Bowery!!! 😊😊😊😊 If you don't believe..listen to Alabama. SHAGGING ON THE BOULEVARD...IT'S ALL ABOUT MYRTLE BEACH!!!
It was about the Depression era and the dust bowl. The people that grew up in that era (like my dad and his siblings) had a childhood rougher than most of us today can imagine. My dad was 6' 3" and only weighed 125 lbs. when he joined the Navy because he had very little to eat growing up. The toughness that came out of it helped them to win WWII and then become what we rightfully call the greatest generation.
Alabama is the greatest! Hit songs for miles and Alabama Christmas (red cover) is my all time favorite Christmas album. It classic and nostalgic as well as our family tradition to listen to it while decorating the tree
This might as well be like a national anthem. I am 64 year old native Texan and it makes me proud. We even had bread lines and a limit on gas we could buy in late 70's or early 80's and remembering the depression from years ago it was kind of scary. Thanks for this reaction video

Angels Among Us is another great Feel good song that brings together everyone. Alabama has had such a long line of hit's and most likely the greatest success any country group will have or have had - taking nothing away from any other group though. With 41 #-1 hits and a string of 21 Straight #1 hits in the eighties what else is there to say.

They have upbeat songs like this one. You need to listen to their love song. I am sure they were responsible for many babies hahaha. When we Make Love , Feels So Right ect. You cannot go wrong with any of their 40 number ones. Angels Among Us is a great song this time of year
😄 I adore you but when you said, “apparently these guys are huge”, well, I did a spit-take on my whiskey and then anxiously looked forward to this. 😂❤️❤️❤️ Great review. 👍🏼
This is a great song, but I'm not quite sure that I'd have suggested this to be your introduction to Alabama. Mountain Music would have been a great first impression. Love in the First Degree, too. Something from earlier in their career. Not that you can go wrong with any Alabama, but for the first listen, I'd have pushed hard for you to listen to early Alabama. Something that a 'random generator' just can't do.
You looked surprised/confused by the line ‘shut my mouth’. It’s a term that’s used as a form of surprise….taste the sweet potato pie, it’s phenomenal, and you say ‘well, shut my mouth’! Get it?
The dust bowl of the 1939s. Drought drove a lot of people off the land and many migrated to the west coast and settled around Bakersfield California. Hence the Bakersfield sound of country
The South was more rural while the North had more factories. The book Hillbilly Elegy came out a few years ago talks about how many Kentuckians moved to Ohio to work in the factories during the 30s. I've started it as so much sounds like my grandparents in some ways and other ways are completely different. The author and I went to rival high schools where a few at his school went on to college and mine it was expected that 90%+ would go. So I go back and forth between agreeing and arguing with the book.
Great Depression. South is always together just like everyone else is together. It’s just the nonsense media and that small percentage that falling them that aren’t.
I'm so glad you finally found Alabama. I've been listening to them for more than 50 years ever since they began in Myrtle Beach, SC as a "bar band" that played for tips tossed in a bucket passed around a local beach bar there. They are GREAT.
It was in that time frame of the depression. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was created as part of the new deal to bring jobs to the south putting in the infrastructure to bring electricity to the rural areas of the. It started out with hydro electric dams, the coal powered plants and then nuclear. I had been working for TVA for two years when this came out and it is always special to me. PS I am still with the TVA.

They have upbeat songs like this one. You need to listen to their love song. I am sure they were responsible for many babies hahaha. When we Make Love , Feels So Right ect. You cannot go wrong with any of their 40 number ones. Angels Among Us is a great song this time of year
Dude i love your reactions. Keep doing your thing. And how bout some live Garth Brooks? You will love his song "If Tomorrow Never Comes "
To help explain this try watching the Grapes of Warth with Henry Fonda. Great song. You nailed it.
Please listen to Alabama singing “Angels Among Us”!!
😄 I adore you but when you said, “apparently these guys are huge”, well, I did a spit-take on my whiskey and then anxiously looked forward to this. 😂❤️❤️❤️ Great review. 👍🏼
Great song!
You need to listen to their song The South is gonna rise again
Really deep into Southern history. My grandfather, a WW2 Navy veteran, refused to vote democrat because of what they did to the South.
Alabama dominated the 80s
Great Depression. South is always together just like everyone else is together. It’s just the nonsense media and that small percentage that falling them that aren’t.
I think it's more about the dust bowl specifically.
I'm so glad you finally found Alabama. I've been listening to them for more than 50 years ever since they began in Myrtle Beach, SC as a "bar band" that played for tips tossed in a bucket passed around a local beach bar there. They are GREAT.
It depicts the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s that was a hard time for the south. You would enjoy any UA-cam info on the dust bowl.
Shut my mouth was Deep South vernacular for “no kiddin’” or “I’ll be damned”
It was in that time frame of the depression. The TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was created as part of the new deal to bring jobs to the south putting in the infrastructure to bring electricity to the rural areas of the. It started out with hydro electric dams, the coal powered plants and then nuclear. I had been working for TVA for two years when this came out and it is always special to me. PS I am still with the TVA.
I know you reacted to this nearly a year ago, but Jeff Cook, the fiddle player in this video, died November 7.
