    John Sykes really transformed Whitesnake from hard rock band into much more modern at the time thunderous heavy metal mixed with glam, and it seems after that the band followed the same route till know. I enjoyed Starkers in Tokyo a lot. My father was listening it for years.

    • @davidstewart4310
      @davidstewart4310 Рік тому +1

      I don't think Sykes ever recorded a solo for HIGA. In fact, i think it might have been the last song done for 1987, by which time Sykes was gone and Vandenberg had taken over guitar duties so he overdubbed the solo and Rhythm guitars. Sykes guitar can still be heard throughout the song tho on the chorus etc :-)

    This reminds me, it's so funny to me how John Sykes fanboys will claim that John was responsible for the success of WS, when their biggest hits were Here I Go Again and Is This Love. One was written years before he go into the band (and he didn't even want to do it, we learn here) and the other was written by David Coverdale himself (meant for Tina Turner). I love John's playing, but some of his fans are just delusional...

    • @davidstewart4310
      @davidstewart4310 2 роки тому +4

      Agreed. 1987 was fantastic because of DC, not JS.

    • @Stargazer-px7fw
      @Stargazer-px7fw 2 роки тому

      I guess people love John because he was involved in 1987 and it is the most successful and best Whitesnake album. David had a great band back there. He was a phenomenal singer and at his prime. John Sykes was amazing and wrote most of the songs for 1987 (facts!). He also wrote the amazing solo for Here I Go Again. It’s a pity it didn’t work out. It’s David band after all…John seems to be still bitter about what happened back there. Hey, imagine seeing some clowns on MTV posing to your songs back then? Wouldn’t you bitter about it? David still pay tribute to John when due, like here for instance. I’m just wondering though, why they keep showing Adrian & Vivian on guitar when talking about John? Get at least this right for god’s sake and show some freakin‘ respect! There’s plenty of live footage of Whitesnake with John.

    • @Bajannez
      @Bajannez 2 роки тому +1

      @@Stargazer-px7fw Yeah, I agree with all of that. I love John Sykes too and that record would never had been the same without him. But success comes mostly from the notoriety you gain from the hit singles. John's contribution to WS's biggest songs in that period (Here I Go Again/Is This Love), every famous guitarist from the 80s could have done.
      My point is, in the big picture, WS would have been just as succesful without him, because those songs would have been just as big without Sykes... so saying that DC owes his success to John is delusional.

    • @demokraatti
      @demokraatti 2 роки тому +2

      @@Bajannez If John Sykes was not a special incridient, then why no other WS album reached the level of 1987? DC has worked with an impressive list of guitarists but none of them could create anything comparable to 1987. After the mega success of 1987 DC had massive budgets and everything available but even that didn’t help. If you listen the early demos of Still of the night it should become clear, that Sykes has a massive contribution to the success of the song.

    • @Stargazer-px7fw
      @Stargazer-px7fw 2 роки тому

      @@Bajannez They had the right songs at the right time, I guess. “Slide it in” was already successful and as a live band they were great. Dave was already an accomplished singer & frontman when he formed Whitesnake. And that voice! One just need to watch California Jam live with the best rock band (back then) Deep Purple in 74. Man, he was roaring like a Lion. I’m having goosebumps just writing this, so much for a fan. The same applies for John, he played with the greats before Whitesnake. Tigers & the legendary Thin Lizzy. Even after Thin Lizzy broke up he keeps writing with the great Phil Lynott (rip). It’s was a perfekt combination between him & David and they had a great backing band. But I think something wrong went between him & John in the mid 80s and my guess the management was also involved, as the whole band got fired. Now everyone is telling a different story. We should never know, as there are always 2 sides of it. I respectfully disagree with you about David could have done it with any guitarist in the 80s and achieved the same success. He worked after him with amazing guitarists like Vivian Campbell, who created classics with DIO, Adrian Vandenberg, Doug Aldrich, Reb Beach…& Steve Vai! And nothing that comes after matches 1987… Anyway, we have this great music to listen to and shouldn’t care much about politics. Cheers :)

    The way David Coverdale screwed over bandmates because he owned the name Whitesnake made me believe that he redid versions of songs like "here I go again" in order to avoid royalties to others.
    Ozzy and others have done the same thing where they would make a new version of an old song with session players essentially , that way the main star like Ozzy or David Coverdale keeps all the royalties when the song gets played on the radio.
    He's definitely a "SNAKE"
