I hate sandflies 🤮 Also it’s never worth removing curtains when you move; they never work in the new house... better to just leave them in my experience .

Writing from Belgium and first time ever commenting on UA-cam. Thanks for the informative, well put-together video. You answered a lot of the questions my husband and I had (bugs and health insurance especially). Love your videos. Thanks again.

Mosquitoes were always going for me but with eating more fruits and salads and cutting down on bad sugars they seem to leave me alone. Yay!

That's so cool! I noticed way less hayfever since eating more plant based meals.

I've lived here in New Zealand since 1995 and have never come across any scary spiders, not even when I lived in the country-side with my horses. I have only encountered sandflies in the Waikato, but have never had any strong reactions. We have here much fewer holiday days at work than in Germany, from my experience. Tap water is very safe here. Shipping pets and horses: went very well, but cost quite a bit. ;) I used IRT with the horses in the Nineties (it cost over $35,000 for a mare with foal and about $5,000 for the cats. I used no agency for the cats. I prepared them myself with my vet in Germany and dealt with MAF directly. The cats went to Auckland for quarantine for one month back then. Look up the MAF website for preparation of your pets to come to NZ. The guy who looked after them was excellent and very friendly and kind with them. I had health insurance privately here for some years, which was excellent (Southern Cross), cheap in comparison to Germany and they actually paid my lazer eye surgery (they don't do that anymore though). Since then my eye sight was great. Those type of surgery and medical procedures are great here. I do recommend private health insurance as I've never used the public system for anything health related yet. My sister-in-law used the public health system for cancer treatment and got excellent treatment and got over the disease well as well. What is bad here is the care for mental health, for that I would definitely recommend Souther Cross health insurance as in the past when I was insure with them I got therapy for depression, but nowadays as I'm not health insured anymore (as I can't find a job in Christchurch since 2017 as in Christchurch it is much more difficult to find work than in the North Island where I lived for 15 years. The care for depression and other mental health issues is very bad in New Zealand. So better insure yourself if you come over. I guess leaving one's country can actually trigger depression easier as you lose your social connections, family and friends and so are more vulnerable to those things. I was extremely home sick for the first years although I did make some friends here too.

That's a really good point about mental health care.

I can definitely relate to you about the sandflies, I recently moved here to NZ and when I get bitten by sandflies it gets so red and inflamed. Yet they don't seem to touch my husband!! 😩

      They're so sneaky too!

I hate sandflies and midges. I hate mosquitoes too. I always joke that I'm the human sacrifice at any outdoor gathering. Biting insects seem to think I'm delicious, yet they mostly leave my husband and son alone. And seriously, I have been to bbq's where I was eaten alive and nobody else got bitten.

My partner has been offered a great position with a scientist institute in Auckland so we will be over June/July....just the two of us and our four legged family...so we will pay taxes, support NZ economy and I volunteer for Hospice and a few other organisations in SA so will most definitely be doing some kind of volunteer work in NZ...we just we to be free to enjoy NZ hassle free...

Hy there! I watched your whole playlist about moving to New Zealand and it helped a lot on making the decision! I was just wondering if you could answer one of my questions. Me and my partner would be eligible to emigrate in2- 3 years. I know it is a long time, but is there anything we can do in prep for the move? Besides saving money?

You get the regional anniversary day off too as a paid public holiday and 5 sick days by law but some employers offer more. I work for a government organization and we get 10 sick days per year and after a certain number of years in the service you get an extra week of leave (so 5 or 6 depending)

Hi Jen. Would you be able to also share a future video or two please about insights into emigrating to England as well, as your family have done that previously also. Thanks in advance.

Would love to, if you have specific questions that I can address. It was ages ago so not sure how to approach it in a general manner, some guiding questions would be great.

Australian here: yeah the bugs here kinda are a big deal. (I'm in Sydney, in the process of moving to NZ) I've had funnel web spiders in my laundry room a few times now. Funnel webs are one of the deadliest spiders in the world (though nobody has died from a funnel web spider bite since the introduction of the anti-venom back in the early 1980's. That said, even with the timely administration of the anti-venom, a bite will still make you very ill). We get huntsman spiders inside all the damn time. I hate huntsman spiders, mainly because they're big and they're ugly (seriously ugly. Like "fell face-first out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down" ugly. Savagely beaten with the ugly stick, ugly.), though they are useful in that they eat other annoying bugs like mosquitoes and flies.

Statutory days now also include Februray 6 and April 25 if on a weekday, but if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday it is observed on the following Monday. Therefore 2 further statutory holidays regardless of when they fall in the week.
