1. The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor ✔ 2. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston ✔ 3. Sula by Toni Morrison ✔ 4. Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur 5. The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah ✔ 6. The Secret Lives of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw Also! "The Women of Brewster Place" also had a TV show "Brewster Place" that was much lighter than the book and movie, but still very good! Books I'd recommend: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Dr. Maya Angelou Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi Just As I Am by Cicely Tyson Kindred by Octavia Butler
Okay now Reginald 4 out of 6 is GOOD. I gotta come harder huh? 😂 I loved Homegoing and I almost put Just As I Am in part 2 but I decided to save her maybe for part 3 🤔 The rest are on my shelves waiting to finally get picked up lol. Ok I didn’t know there was a tv show for Brewster place!! Thanks for telling me. I’ll have to see where I can watch.
Assata’s book is a must read. I would like to add that for me it was a difficult and painful read as a black woman, so take your time when reading it💛 her story and place in history is powerful.
Something about their eyes were watching God triggers me lol like it emotionally moves me because of the growth aspect, that was from the movie. Now I will get the book.
It’ll get there! I’ve been growing my library for 17 years. There’s even more shelves you can’t see in this video along with bookstacks on the floor 🤦🏾♀️
I'm glad I've found your channel. I never heard of the book "The Secret Lives of Church Ladies" and I reserved a copy from my local library. Thank you for taking the time to do this-much appreciated. I've subscribed so I won't miss out on any book gems you suggest in the future. 📚
Just to say thanks as I started reading Sula on the back of this vids recommendation. 1/3 of the way in and I'm 😯! (in a good way) I had to close the book to recover n pause for thought lol
I’m new to your channel and I loving it and I actually would love to read these books as well. I have read the women of Brewster Place. Thank you for the!!
Difficult read, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou. Read it in college as part of my Women’s History course. Still thought provoking after so many years. Do you have a list for 14/15 age group? Movies and books?
Such a good list! Gloria naylor is so slept on. I need to read the men of brewster place. There were so many things i didnt like about teacake. New subbie hope youre still making videos. Winter was immature the secret lives of church ladies i loved.
Yes ma’am more videos coming soon. Thanks for subscribing! And yes agreed agreed. When people rave about teacake I be sooo confused. I too, need to read the men of Brewster place.
There's another book by Elaine Brown who was part of the Black Panthers and no one really talks about this woman people need to read her book I read it years ago and it got wet installation I threw it out so that everybody seems to skip over this woman from the Black Panthers and she was Huey Newton right-hand woman
Personally, I found Their Eyes Were Watching God difficult to read because of the broken English. Might give it another try..I have 6 Audible credits I'm trying to use up, so trying to get good recommendations.
Brewster place is not a book that all black women should read how does it navigate on life what is so profound about this book that it captures the essence of how black women live in America. It doesn't, it was a book about people trying to find a home in an area that was not suitable for all people to live in all black people contrary to what you think did not grow up and under development community accepting government cheese I like how to community came together but other than that no it wasn't their eyes were watching God was a great movie about liberation and freedom of a woman but for some reason people think it's a love story that's why I Spike Lee dedicated to Zora near Houston not because of a love story. We need some educational authors because clearly a lot of black people don't know why they use zoom why we have gas and electric they're just so unaware of all the things that black people have invented and patented you know your kids stay at home because of a lady named Marion croc she went to the Patton Hall of Fame she perfected soon I mean educational books are what is needed because these young people don't know much of any of our history because if they did they would hold their head up high
OK, I am going to come out of left field with this. I am not a woman and do not go to church. Black Man's Burden (1961) by Mack Reynolds That book was written by a White man. So definitely left field. I wonder if a Black man, or woman, could have gotten it published back then. But you do not have to buy it. It is free on the Internet. Assata is the book that might relate to this one best. Look at the global economy and chip war witj China. Consider the technology you use for your BookTube. I used to work for IBM and my smartphone still amazes me. Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics by Stan Gibilisco I wish someone had given me something like that when I was in 7th grade.
Hi beautiful! I’m so happy I found your channel. I have been wanting to read more this past year and I see reading vlogs but not anyone who looks like us, so I searched books for black women and there you were. 🫶🏾 You have totally peaked my interest. I think I want to start with Assata. I’m pretty sure it’s because I enjoy quick reads online about people and actual events lol. Sula will be right after 😅 New Subbie 💕 keep going my sis! ✨

That one is on my forever list to read. Yes, I have the teen version of this coming in a couple weeks. Stay tuned! I don’t really do movies here
@@ChocolateCoveredPages I would appreciate that. Last year, I sent my nieces the book and movie, “Hidden Figures.” But it would great to have more!
Loved Deesha's book. What about "Girl Woman Other" by Bernardine Evaristo?
I do own that one but I haven’t read it yet. You recommend it?
