Why Do We Celebrate Tartan Day? Inspiration for Americans with Scottish roots, Celtic Americans

  • Happy Tartan Day!
The first American Tartan Day was held in New York City by the New York Caledonian Club on July 1, 1982. This was intended to be a one-time-only celebration marking the 200th anniversary of the repeal of the ‘Act of Proscription’ of 1747.
In 1998 the Coalition of Scottish Americans successfully lobbied the Senate to draft a resolution designating April 6 as ‘National Tartan Day’.
This resolution was not the end of the process of making the holiday national, however. But in 2008, President George W. Bush issued a proclamation establishing a National Tartan Day:
"Americans of Scottish descent have made enduring contributions to our Nation with their hard work, faith, and values. On National Tartan Day, we celebrate the spirit and character of Scottish Americans and recognize their many contributions to our culture and our way of life."
So how do you celebrate Tartan Day?
There are few established customs to date. The main focus of the day is parades - the most famous being in NYC. However, across the country plenty of towns also hold parades. Pipe bands perform. People put on their kilts for the day and go out to the pub together. There's nothing amiss in borrowing a few customs from Burns Night for this occasion, too. After all, any excuse to eat haggis is a good one!
    Music:
Ode to the Fallen by Adrian Von Zeigler.
Dawn of Hope by Marc Jungermann.
Home of Heroes by Adrian Von Zeigler.
The Land of the Free by Adrian Von Zeigler.

Well done Eric. I was asked some years ago by a friend in Inverness about Americans "connections" to Scotland. He loved it but was mystified by it.
I just sent him this link. 👍👍👍👍

Happy Tartan Day! May all your colors turn heads as you pass by, and wear the tartan proudly with humility and honor. We must never forget our Scottish forebears that helped pave way to this nation to flourish and thrive. Pay homage to those before that hath made it possible for us to wear the tartan on this day.

Think of those here in the U.S. who do not know there ancestry. I for one did not know the history of of who I was until I did the DNA testing. And even then ,I did not know until I did a family tree search. There I found the names that made it clear. When I found out more about them. From where they came. Oh, I am a mutt. We cannot deny this being in this country . But the amount of Scottish descent I never knew. How many are like I was?

As a proud Scot, I found this eulogy very moving. I pray for the day when Scotland, like our Scots-American family, can celebrate our own ‘Independence Day’.
PS: Could I make a request Scots don’t like to be referred to as Scotch. ‘Scots’ is the much preferred pronoun.

My mother is a Ker, my father is a Karrick, to my knowledge Karrick is a place name in Scotland, in Ayrshire. Makes me wonder what clan my Ancestors pledged allegiance to. (One account of my genealogy says the Karrick name is descended from Earl’s of Carrick, and Robert the Bruce himself but really who knows.)

Scots also fought and died for Texas. Many scots were at the Alamo, 80% of the men being of Scottish decent, and the Scottish government commemorated their sacrifice with a stone laid at the shrine to those men.
