Appreciate the info, let me know if you ever find that link, I'd like to check it out.
My favorite Lindbergh photo I'm convinced was taken with a very shallow depth of field.
It's a group shot of some supermodels in an alley. They're all wearing leather boots and hats with motorcycles. It's an easy google search. I'm curious to get your take on wether that was a shallow depth of field or just lighting/positioning etc.
That picture alone made me move from the 2.8 to the 1.9 lens. I kept thinking that I'd miss out on such a powerful shot opportunity with a more limited depth of field

I had the decision to make just before Christmas on the X2D, SL3 or GFX100 II and I ended up with the X2D.... it's not small and light (especially with my favorite lens, the 80mm 1.9) but the image quality is second to nothing. My friends SL3 just doesnt' stack up, and the Fuji needs too much post processing to get the color correct. That said, you're right there are fewer good fast lenses for this camera.. my next lens will be a 20-35 likely, considering the wider angles and the large sensor, it will behave very much like a fast lens does.

Good choice, I don't know enough about the SL3 yet but definitely X2D > GFX in my book as well.
      Imagine if Hasselblad made a ~35mm f1.7
      -----
The new zoom + the 80 is a solid kit. One of my favorite things about the 80 is simply looking at the glass. That front element sings when it's reflecting all the nearby light across it.

@@WILMORENO I feel you man, that 3.5 number is just off-putting but the glass in that lens is top notch and as someone who has the 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux for my M11, yes, that .95 inspires me to get out and shoot... but I can also confirm that this 80mm 1,9 gives the same exact vibes, keep the X2D and don't look back.

    Hey Will,
Have you considered the SL3? It's not as small as an M, but paired with the SL APO's you're going to get the separation I think you're looking for, plus insane sharpness. And even though it's not the Fastest AF in the world it is better than the Hassy. Plus you can adapt all of the M lenses to them easily and they look even better on that sensor.

I agree 100% with your lens options, which is why I shoot with the 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.2, and 85/1.4 on my Sony A7R5. I’ve thought a lot about getting an x100D, but there is no way to match my expectations for shallow DOF and pinpoint AF on the eyes compared to Sony with the lenses I mentioned. That’s why I decided to spend the money I saved for an x100D on an A1-2. This camera will have even better AF + open the door to wildlife and sports. I shot Leica for about 15 years (M6, M7, R9) and loved them. Leica was slow to digital, which s why I switched initially to Canon and now Sony. I can say without question that the Sony lenses I mentioned leave nothing on the table compared to modern Leica glass and improve on it in many ways. Would I love to have an M11 right now? Sure, the shooting experience would be the best, but the results would not compare favorably to Sony with the lenses I list. All the best.

Why anyone wouldn't want the option for more light...in the game of catching light is beyond me. Plus I personally prefer to have the lowest iso/fastest shutter speed possible. With these higher resolution sensors, any bit of motion blur/camera shake becomes noticeable. The X2D does have the best ibis I've ever experienced. Which is great if you the photographer is a little shaky, but still doesn't stabilize your subject. So faster shutter speed is still my overall preferred option.
Thanks for sharing, and it sounds like you're locked and loaded for anything.

The Hassy is amazing. I love my X1D2 but I’m currently selling it because of the block on using Capture One. I don’t like Phocus or Lightroom, plus Adobe have doubled my monthly subscription charge. I only went with Lightroom because of the Hasselblad.

I feel you. I have both and I can't bring myself to sell either one. I think of them as different instruments for different applications. Leica is awesome for that buttery shallow DOF and character. Hasselblad is great for insane performance and that medium format goodness (colors are a moveable feast if you shoot RAW). I've shot the 90 and the 80 and I can confirm that the 90 is sharper; I got the 90 by pure luck and it's my go-to for anything portrait. The DOF difference is minimal given that the 90 is more telephoto. If you have a chance, try the 135 from Hasselblad; it's one of my favorite lenses ever. I have shot a lot with Leica and now use the X2D and 20-35, 25v, 28P, 45P, 55v, 90v, 120mm and 135mm. For a "Waffle House" situation, I wonder if the X2D/28P combo would have been fine and relatively discreet. The 80mm is gigantic and soooo heavy (25v feels much smaller / lighter). I sold the 80 when I moved to the 90v, which is an amazing lens, and I have no regrets. Don't forget f/2.5 on a medium format camera is like f/1.8 on a full frame camera in terms of depth of field. I get the temptation to go back to Leica, though, and sometimes think about picking up a M10-R and one or two lenses just for that shooting experience and the unique and tiny lenses offered in M-mount. Finally, don't forget you can adapt M lenses to the X2D - some lenses work better than others, such as the 50mm Summilux (wider M lenses tend not to work as well, I.e., don't cover the whole sensor so you have to crop). Good luck- all good choices!

@petermendelson5839 yeah the 28p could work, I had one when they first released. But something about it didn't warm up to me at the time.

The Leica look is created by the Leica lenses. The images are detailed and lively (the 3D pop) but not razor sharp. I currently have a M11 with a lot of lenses but my favorites are the 35 APO, 35 Summilux FLE and Steel Rim (classic look optical design from 1961), 50 Summilux and the 50 Noctilux 0.95 which almost create the large format look sometimes.
I also have the Fujifilm GFX 100s with the 55 1.7 & 80 1.7 for medium format stuff.

And yeah I thought that I'd get an even bigger step up in image quality moving to medium format. But leica has some kind of magic. And that's what I've been chasing.

I haven’t tried any Zeiss lenses yet, but I do have a few Voigtländer lenses for focal lengths I don’t shoot with much. Honestly, I don’t feel like there’s a big jump in image quality when I shoot with my GFX compared to my Leica.
The 35mm APO is an amazing lens. It’s super detailed, no chromatic aberration, vibrant colors, and the close focus down to 0.3m makes it really versatile.
What makes Leica special is their optical performance. People often talk about sharpness, but with Leica, it’s not about edge sharpness-it’s about the resolving power. Their lenses capture details and micro-contrast with so much clarity, giving the images a unique character that’s hard to match. Plus, with Leica, you can use any lens dating back to 1925 if you’re after that classic character. And if you’re looking for perfection, there’s always the 35mm and 50mm APO 😎.

@@ItisBean I agree the medium format...well mostly medium format jump from full frame wasn't quite as dramatic as I expected.
Close focusing is a big one for me, but you definitely have pay for it. And I agree most get lost in the sharpness debate but ignore microcontrast and 3d pop etc. Theses attributes that don't appear on mtf charts.
I've now got my mind set on an apo lens, thank you!

I understand and agree with most of what you say. But for IQ the HB has it hands down. Color and light are what the HB does so well. The Leica is not in the same class. I have some old M bodies and some nice 50's. I get good color and light but alongside the X2D, no comparison. But I am just an amateur hack out their destroying electrons. Naaa keep the Hassy - technically it's a much better camera. And before buying a Leica I'd rather go Canon, especially as a fan of fast lenses, and if my main pain point was AF: Both RF 1.2 lenses are brilliant, as well as the RF135 1.8, and the R5 is no slouch, either.

The RF28-70 2 is a good compromise solution for the professional event photographer who wants flexibility with one body only, but nothing like the RF50 1.2 or RF85 1.2 or RF135 1.8. These are sharp wide open, and nail focus every time on the R5. Maybe give the RF85 1.2 a try for a day...

I was on the fence about going with the x2d over getting back into an M camera. I had an m240, and it wasn’t the camera I wanted it to be. While I was in NYC for Christmas, I jumped on an M11p and a 35 summicron. I shoot a lot of weddings, and when I whip out an R3 with a 28-70 on it.. they get nervous. The M11 should reduce a little of that (from my experience). Training back up for a wild wedding season with the rangefinder in my downtime. I feel like the next Hasselblad might be the one for me. Hopefully it has servo AF and maybe a joystick. I’d also love for it to have pixel binning like the M.
Also, looks like you’re working with some of the CHS talent! I’ve worked with some of the same ladies.

@@petrolabkilla That m240 was a chunky leica but at least it had video...kind of lol. Congrats on your m11p, that script on the top makes a handsome camera even more attractive. Sapphire is a proper screen material for a luxury camera as well.
I had that 28-70 on a r5 for a brief moment. Absolutely massive lens to aim at people but hey, constant f2 on a zoom is really hard to pass up. Especially if you're shooting weddings
Servo and joystick would make a huge difference for sure. Joysticks should be mandatory on cameras.. I wonder how far out the X3D is. But you'd think servo firmware update could show up at any moment.
I'm a little hesitant to get a m11 now because they've been out for 3 years now. I wonder if a m12 is around the corner.
Speaking of features we'd want. If the m12 somehow implemented a digital rangefinder, I would lose my mind. Like the option to zoom in through the window for focus. But still also have the option to line up boxes for those who like the typical rangefinder experience...
The visoflex 2 was nice because I could tilt it. But it did make the camera noticeably taller.
Small world! Are you from Charleston? There's a lot of great talent in this area. Most of those girls I've photographed many times on many different cameras.

I'm like the odd man out. I own an M11, X2D, and just recently bought a 2022 M6 because I love the different variations of B&W film and grain textures you can achieve using different film stock and chemicals. For my X2D, I've adapted a wide variety of Hasselblad HC lenses using the XH 0.8 adapter, and they all look amazing, so much so that I never have the desire to look at the new XV series. The only thing I miss out on is AF, but that's not really an issue for me. As for my Leica cameras, my favorite from top to bottom is the 50mm Noct f1.2, 35mm Summilux FLE, and Thypoc 28mm f1.4.
Personally, I love shooting the X2D with an HC 100 f2.2 for portrait work. With the XH converter, it makes it an 80.2mm f1.8. Could the lens be sharper, of course, but for portrait work, it's amazing and still very sharp. With focus peaking, I can still achieve focus on the eyes with no problem. Yes, the Hasselblad system is big and gets even heavier with the adapters, but the proof is in the pudding, as they say. Nighttime photos are also a big advantage. The dynamic range with IBIS and ISO 64 is pure magic. I can easily hand-hold an X2D with HC 100 in the dark with no problem. In fact, it's the only way I can shoot after dark as I hate using tripods.
As for my Leica's, I do use them to get a different look, I guess I'm a fast lens guy as well but only because they still are pretty small compared to Hasselblad lenses and I do love that I can adapt them to my Hasselblad as well best of both worlds.

@@petermendelson5839 Out of the three M mount lenses only the Thypoc lens has full coverage with mild vignette, the other two I use them with 35mm crop. The Thypoc 28mm lens is sharper than I expected which may be good or bad and it does make the whole setup much lighter.
