There is an organised crime network built around stealing these berries. Every year the Environmentally Endangered Lands program catches whole crews with huge sacks stealing the berries from conservation areas. The guys picking berries are mostly migrants unaware this is a crime. The crew is dropped off by someone who hired them and promised to pay when they come back with a pickup truck to collect all the sacks filled with berries. If an unfamiliar vehicle is nearby, they just drive past.
