- The Marriage Story press conference at the 57th New York Fiilm Festival featured Noah Baumbach, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Ray Liotta, Alan Alda, and producer David Heyman. They discuss the influences on the film-from Hitchcock to Persona-Robbie Ryan's cinematography, the duality of marriage, the importance of adding humor to the narrative, the different personalities of the lawyers, and much more. Moderated by Florence Almozini, NYFF selection committee member and Associate Director of Programming at Film at Lincoln Center.
57th New York Film Festival is presented by Film at Lincoln Center from Friday, September 27 - Sunday, October 13. See ticket info, the schedule, and more: filmlinc.org/nyff
Noah Baumbach’s new film is about the rapid tangling and gradual untangling of impetuosity, resentment, and abiding love between a married couple negotiating their divorce and the custody of their son. Adam Driver is Charlie, a 100-percent New York experimental theater director; Scarlett Johansson is Nicole, his principal actress and soon-to-be L.A.-based ex-wife. Their “amicable” breakup devolves, one painful rash response and hostile counter-response at a time, into a legal battlefield, led on Nicole’s side by Laura Dern and on Charlie’s side by nice Alan Alda and not-so-nice Ray Liotta. What is so remarkable about Marriage Story is its frank understanding of the emotional fluctuations between Charlie and Nicole: they are both short-sighted, both occasionally petty, both vindictive, and both loving. The film is as harrowing as it is hilarious as it is deeply moving. With Merritt Wever and Julie Hagerty as Nicole’s sister and mom, and Azhy Robertson as their beloved son, Henry. A Netflix release.
A centerpiece of New York culture since 1963, the New York Film Festival will introduce the most essential new cinematic works from around the world to U.S. audiences in its Main Slate. NYFF will also continue to feature a variety of titles in different sections and sidebars, including Spotlight on Documentary, newly rejuvenated classics in Restorations and Revivals, a diverse selection of international and locally made Shorts, the ever-expanding experimental showcase Projections, and the immersive storytelling experiences of the cutting-edge Convergence. Additionally, there will be an exciting lineup of special events, free filmmaker talks and panel discussions, and the latest editions of our annual Industry and Critic Academies.

I think the thing I will remember the most about this movie, the acting part, is one of Adam's last scenes near the end when his son got a hold of and is reading his mothers list of the things she loved about him, and when you look at his face it is absolutely real you can see uncontrolled emotion just breaking out and it is so hard to look at and no understand completely what is going on with him.
7:24 Scarlett is so cute omg my heart! She deserved the Oscar for this movie let's be honest
Adam driver is absolutely amazing!
It's difficult to not like him and his acting. It's absolutely incredible!
I'm glad I scrolled down to the comments before having to endure the awkardness of this video.
The moderator reminds the lady from the film who comes in Charlie's LA house
Amar Aabl 🤣🤣🤣
Well said 😄😄
Thought it was her.
Adam is the sweetest human.
To Adam: if you ever see this. Thank you for your service to our country. Happy Veterans Day!
I got to see Alan Alda speak at my college on his scientific communication program, what an honor. He is a national treasure both on and off the screen.
I really would love to see Scarlett, Laura, Adam and Alda take home some Oscars. For Adam it will be tough because Joaquin gives such a beautiful performance this year. Wish them all the best of luck and I can’t wait to see this for myself.
Alan Alda brings a smile to every room he is in. What a man!
they did such an excellent job! laura dern, alan alda n ray liotta make their short appearances count! They were so rivetting! While watching, the comedic moments such as Adam Driver's character's inability to order his own lunch and him needing Scarlett's help, her helping him to tie his shoelaces slice me back to realization that people can separate and still love each other. And yes, I used to be bothered watching married couples confront n fight but watching this, the director makes me realize that the one argument they had help them bond n understand each other. The director did such an excellent job n he was right. Divorce is also a love story. As the director seems to insinuate through this film, the legal harassment of divorce couples faced should not take love away from it all.
Is the moderator same person acting a social worker in the movie?
Adams face like ' ?????? ' at 15:58 😂😂😂😂😂😂
In all the video, I guess
😂😂😂yup
And the minute later Noah trying so hard to make sense of her idiotic questions - omgggg painful
The moderator is abominably incompetent.
Alan Alda Is one of the most positive happiest people on earth. And I love it!
he brings that energy in every scene in every snippets he is in. its amazing wat he can do at this age
The moderator is so embarrassing with her nonsense questions. She seems to have seen another film. Noah and Adam are visibly irritated by her, and they have all the reasons.
Thank you for not making me waste my time
I disagree, these questions were made before any other interview came out. I think the questions are ok. They are irritated because all the interviews are made at the same week and are the same questions on all of them. But there's no way to know it because are at the same time and interviewers don't know what others do before them.
The moderator is by far one of the worst I’ve seen!
She's like a droid. They could have used a Text to Speech software instead. :/
I agree. I so badly want to watch the rest of this but can't handle her lack of research and inability to ask clear, concise questions.
Horrible moderator
English is not her first language. She seemed to miss nuances and the finer points of the English language.
Fuck someone should actually fire her or tell her that her questions are shit
Adam!!! Bring an Oscar home this year!!!
I love you unconditionally, Scarlett. 😭❤️
We love Adam
@Ruin Gosev probably just the role. Also he's finished filming Star Wars where he usually bulks up more than his typical frame
Adam’s shoes are always amazing.
Sad to see Alan like that but i'm glad he is always joking and smiling.
This is very hard to watch.
scarlett johansson was stopping her self from crying ... me too watching the movie god damn it
When tho?
ahhhhhhh god watching this was hard, I felt like Noah had to come in and correct the moderator about assumptions she made which maybe is from a communication and language difference I could be wrong but everyone had a very difficult time understanding what she was even asking when she was asking it.
This interview is as messed up as the marriage story
scarlett is so beautiful🥺😍
Omg for the moderator. She keep confused everyone with her questions
Well, she got fired, I guess.
This moderator makes me cringe. She made them so uncomfortable. Please don’t let this woman moderate anymore.
I thought for a relatively small part Ray Liotta was absolutely the essence of a divorce lawyer.
Adam!!!😍😍
Cannot find words to describe him!
The moderator is fucking great.. With it's incompetence he provoke them to the impossible :)
If it isn't professional at least it was truly.
and the worst is that the actors are actually takes this movie as their next job, they obviously can't describe the meaning of the hole story,,, they just repeat: you know, you know.... what I know? I know a lot of things, but they doesn't have.any point of view..... it is not so complicated to describe the story.... their cpu is overloaded
It took me an hour to watch this video because I had to stop every few minutes, waiting for the cringe to go away. I'm sorry but the moderator is horrible and I felt so uncomfortable watching her.
Scarlett brings me LIFEEE! ❤️
Alan Alda: Says joke
Ray Liotta: He's a funny guy!
What a waste of an opportunity to address this beautiful film with this amazing cast & creators. This was the only full cast interview I found on UA-cam and I cannot watch it because of the absolute ineptitude of the moderator. Very unfortunate.
The moderator was so rude with Noah :(
So embarassing to watch!
The are all so brilliant in various ways that they’ve managed to deliver a really interesting conversation about this genius movie despite this unbelievably nonsense moderator working tirelessly to make it as unwatchable as possible!
These characters are REAL. They certainly are not flawed to the point of unbearable. Wth? This moderator on the other hand.....
Scarlett ❤️
Get Jenelle Riley in here
"That's not his face that's his leg"
Tamara Tasic oh my God!!! So awkward! 😆
What a stupid line to say- you can see Noah almost mumbling something under his nose like is she kidding me
@@luckystarpiano hahaha
7:16 love the pan to reveal Scarlett lol
Why is scarlett almost crying
Kylo Ren, Black Widow, Henry Hill, Hawkeye Pierce and Ellie Sattler in one film? Yes Please! 😯👍
Alan Alda is golden
@FilmatLincolnCenter, vet your moderator's before an interview. This is such a waste.
Sierra Santiago amen!! I try to never leave negative comments but this is just below the caliber of such a prestigious institution as Lincoln Center!
Alan Alda is a national treasure
Usually I try to be so understanding of the moderator cause that has to be hard right........ she was just so terrible
The moderator is everythin ok with her??... I mean I felt a bit embarrased
Scarlett grande atriz 👏👏👏👏
Painful. Horrible experience for them to be interviewed by someone so incompetent and horrible for us to watch. I’d rather watch Prince Andrew’s interview
I disagree, these questions were made before any other interview came out. I think the questions are ok. They are irritated because all the interviews are made at the same week and are the same questions on all of them. But there's no way to know it because are at the same time and interviewers don't know what others do before them.
Can't finish watching this...interviewer is horrible. Love you Adam!!
11:14 so awkward. Adam Driver's face lol, he's tired of this shit.
they all seem tense and taking themselves way too seriously
It's a serious movie.
Exactly. With scarlett in the cast, take it easy serious folk.😁😂
Because this interviewer makes no sense. I don’t know how she got the job
I'd have the exact same face when I have to fly across half the world and keep having to correct an interviewer about every question they ask you, like its an opportunity to give insight and perspective and get deep, and instead half the time is wasted on correcting and interpreting.
Black Widow/Ash the Porcupine & Kylo Ren?
He thumbnail makes me think he could play a young Christopher Plummer
I was going to watch, then listened to the quality of the interviewer's English. Why?
RACIST
Ugh this moderator makes moderators like Mindy Kaling sound like Emma Watson. She's cringe and slightly rude at times.
Alan Alda ♥️👏🏼👏🏼
Dear Lincoln Center, is this really the only possible moderator you could find??? This is painful to listen to and that’s a shame as I wanted to see what these great talents had to say.
I love Alan Alda, it’s sad see his body shaking, that’s what Parkinson does. I’m preparing for the day he was no longer with us, an icon
I know this has been said but nothing is more annoying then seeing a moderator annoy your favorite directors/actors.
Terrible moderator. I understand what everyone is talking about!
The way the production was made is too far ahead for viewers at this time in age.
The aura in the room is so boring and heavy. I understand it’s an interview- but this woman needs to do better. Adam seems SO DONE with this woman too. I know he doesn’t like awkward and weird situations in interviews- I just feel bad for him... this is so dry
Adam Driver as Kylo Ren
Incredible cast of creative and brilliant human beings.
Moderator was incompetent and unprepared. She could have done much better...what a wasted opportunity.
36:01
Ray is thinking, you are a funny guy!
This made it worth watching this horrible interview lol
Perhaps they should have found a moderator who was fluent in English.
You had to go there? You don’t have to speak English to be competent. Yes, she wasn’t that prepared or experienced, but you don’t have to resort to that response.
@@Hayat-hl1bh One has to be competent in the English language, if one is conducting an interview in English, with individuals who speak English. I'm multilingual. I remember having to do presentations in French and German, conducting interviews in French and German, and writing multiple compositions in French and German. I had to take a two hour proficiency exam in both French and German. This all occurred at the high school level. I have taken other foreign languages in college , while studying courses in the sciences, and other prerequisites for a career a health care professional. If she couldn't speak English fluently, with ease, she should have used an interpreter.
Denise Eggert Her English was fine. She did not deliver it that well. I don’t know what your language background has anything to do with this conversation
Hayat I am multilingual. I am competent in at least 5 languages besides English .I studied at least two languages besides English for many years in school. I am a native speaker of American English.and fluent in British English, Canadian English, and Australian English.
I would consider myself to be fluent in only two foreign languages: French and German .One needs to study the history and culture of every country of the world where a particular language is spoken by native speakers. One must also study the literature , the arts , notable individuals who were authors, poets, artists , scientists , and heroes of a country . Part of studying history and culture includes the study of its etiquette and manners . If one doesn’t study the proper etiquette and manners of a country, where a language is spoken, one not considered to be fluent in the language . Professional translators will agree with me.
I have worked with many foreign medical residents and foreign nurses who have come to work in hospitals the U.S. to complete their training or to complete clinical work . They will tell Hospital Administration that they are fluent in English - but many of us will have to intervene when they upset patients , family members, and other staff members by their behavior, mannerisms and speech. I’m sure that their behavior, mannerisms and speech would be considerate totally appropriate in their country but it is offensive in the U.S. Example : One well intentioned medical resident from the Middle East was doing a admitting history and physical on a cardiac patient in the emergency department . The patient became furious , upset, and explosive when the medical resident asked the man if there any family members married to cousins in his family tree . I happened to hear this when I was walking past the room . I intervened and explained to the patient that the medical resident didn’t mean anything by his statement . I explained that he was coming from a different cultural reference, -because it is quite common for cousins to marry each other in many parts of the Middle East I had to explain to the medical resident (outside of the patient’s room ) that it was an insult in American culture to question someone if there is cousin marriage in his or her family tree , because cousin marriage is considered something that only uneducated , backwards people do who live in isolated places.
I have had certain nurses from Africa boldly ask me my age and martial status, upon first meeting me and then boldly ask me why I don’t look as old as another nurse who is the same age as me ( in front of the other nurse ) These questions are considered completely inappropriate, rude, and displaying poor manners in the professional and business work place, in the United States . One doesn’t ask these private questions of a colleague or a coworker upon meeting them. These questions might be asked of a colleague or coworker in private , when they have developed a friendship and trust.
We have had male medical residents who came from India who were able to speak the Queen’s English but they didn’t realize the culture differences in the U.S., regarding the status of women and the status of professional nurses and respiratory therapists in healthcare . They would
actually order professional nurses around, as if they were subservient to them. They came from a country where men are dominant and have the rule over women in every role, including another physician who happens to be a female .I saw this in person in front of me in India .They expected all women to be obedient and submit to their authority . They included men who were professional nurses .One professional nurse who was a man, reported this one Indian medical resident for ordering him around as a “ water boy like Gunga Din” and threatened him with physical harm, when he didn’t blindly obey .
@@DeniseEggertwaterlily Again, irrelevant. I am signing out. Peace! V
Does this fellow ever give any other expression than this.
What/who are you taking about?
the girl talking is seriously annoying
Scarlett looks so tired and sad :(
Poopy Lasagna it might be the lighting. It's causing significant shows underneath her eyes.
i think she reflects abt divorce thinking of her own a bit. she was teary eyed.
@@kays3956 no, she was crying because she went all this way to this awful interview. She would've been better off stuck in traffic.
Rey Leota strikes me as a slimy individual. Maybe I’m projecting because of the roles he’s played in the past, but his energy seems off.
Why is the moderator french? Get an native English speaker god damn it.
Drew Evans or at least someone who is not this rude and just clueless
Kylo ren and henry hill?
Adam Driver and Ray Liotta.
@Sharad Kazimi its called sarcasm you beta bitch.
Shouldn't the movie be called Divorce story instead.
Divorce is the opposite of wedding, not marriage.
I AM SORRY BUT ALL PEOPLE SHOULD TO WEAR WATCH ON LEFT HAND , NOT ON RIGHT HAND , IF YOU ARE RIGHT HANDED PERSON YOU SHOULD TO WEAR WATCH ON LEFT HAND ,
THIS RULE IS RIDICULOUS.
This is my favorite UA-cam comment. Bless you for your beautifully unnecessary specificity and vitriol.
OH REALLY IS THIS OBLIGATORY?
29:00 - Scarlett seems so clueless ... she is talking about this movie like it is a comedy. She sounds so weird.
that's because she was answering a question regarding the comedy of the situation...
Horrible interviewer...all she cared about what Scarlett
Adam Driver is the king of this movie. Scarlett was a disappointment. She was lazy in this movie and barely showed emotion.
you really are a dumb bitxch
What? I do agree that Adam Driver was amazing, but Scarlett was just as good, she interpreted this challenging role as real as she could, i was amazed at how both actors managed to show such a realistic view to the complex characters
The jealousy showing Laura.
what are you on about wtf😂
Bffr- 💀💀
