- Insider's Claudia Romeo traveled to Brittany, France to meet with Jean-Yves Bordier, a butter artisan who brought back to France the 19th-century technique of malaxage, using a big wooden wheel to knead the butter. To Jean-Yves, the malaxage is a more romantic way to make butter. At his workshop, everything is churned, kneaded, and shaped by hand.

this man has been waiting to be interviewed like this for his entire life. an icon truly
He really looks so happy 😂😂
And he's super adorable to boot.
Absolutely. He _needed_ to talk about this butter.
@@k.d.kelley2830 And he's adorable
I was thinking the exact same thing. He has such a passion for it. It's wonderful.
Forget about the butter, this video is all about this man's wisdom.

@@MY-zx6lz No they mean this man's wisdom

@@MY-zx6lz arrogance to what?
@@MY-zx6lz I think your world is upside down...
The butter maker, Jean Yves, said the most important thing is emotions. "I'm a little man, making little things". What a sweet and gentle man. A true artisan who loves his craft and the people who work for him.
If you think about it we all just little men making little things
He has a very nice factory +the product is incredible I m sure. But I don't think he's a >little man< when he's owning an old family business. I m sure he is a millionaire + fam owns property etc.
@@alibaehh6565 why does money matter
@@UnrealObject Little men are not millionaires, duh
The "little good man" translation for "un tout petit bonhomme" was not accurate.
Translating "bonhomme" as "good man" is literal translation which is wrong, although etymologically correct.
What he meant was something more along the lines of "I'm the little guy compared to the other 97% industrial butter companies who spit out junk by the ton".
Being the little guy in the food industry is considered a good thing around here, this man sells his products at a huge markup to the best ⭐⭐⭐michelin restaurants in this country, he's a millionaire at the very least.
His company's revenue for 2009 were of 3,686,220 €, so he's probably fine 12 years later.
By the end (14:25), the subtitles read "staff" but really he calls them "mon collaborateur... mon compagnon" which actually means "my collaborators... my companions" and that is so so sweet 😭😭😭 they aren't people working for him, they are people working with him. This amout of respect in the workplace is so rare nowadays. Machine operated factories really dehumanized laborers 😔 Wish we could all have bosses like him
Not only dehumanised but also the absurd claim that factory workers were doing mindless jobs. Well if the jobs are setup in this way where people rotate roles and are part of the whole creative process, it isn't mindless is it?
I just love that the French for "staff" is "collaborateurs". Truly French
@@alisterrebelo9013 exactly! 😁
@@timorgano if I'm not mistaken, there is a french word that better translates to staff ("le personnel"; even saying "le staff" is correct). That man made a deliberate choice to refer to his staff as collaboraters! I agree that that attitude is very french 😊

That what makes masterpieces

@Susan Ananda I think he says so in the video.

The part at the end where he talks about how if he replaced all his employees with machines, that he'd make more money and butter but nothing would ever happen in his factory really spoke to me. Pure poetry.
he dont talk about his factory, he talk about his heart.
I think it's great more factories should use less machine and hire more people. So more people have the opportunity to work. Lots of jobs are being replaced by machines these days 🙄
@@faithrequiero5941 Yes but many factory are forces to use machines because there is no worker , no one want to do the most boring/exhausting tasks
@@pyragon_7239 In general, people would put up with any job so long as they’d get paid. There is no labor shortage, there’s just a matter of efficiency in which machines achieve that easily.

Imagine a world where everyone could pursue whatever they love as much as this guy loves making butter, without worrying about going broke, hungry, or homeless.
We could have moved toward this dream if Andrew Yang would have won the last presidential election. He wanted a universal basic income. People stuck in jobs they hate doing would have the extra income to pursue their dream.
@@anonymwho7263 UBI yes, Andrew Yang nooooo. He probably set the conversation about UBI in the US back five to ten years.

Hard work and luck and a team
I feel like the world would be better ngl. Ppl actually wanting to do their job and do it well
he didn't call them his staff, but his "collaborators" and "companions", such a good boss.
If only entrepreneurs called their staff associates, partners or companions, they would never replace them with machines! Very true what you say!
@@pooja_2023 you have that in consulting
Exactly what I have noticed. The translation had to be accurate to point out this man's nobel heart
for all we know he could be a tyrant that pay his staff minimum wage.
14:30 he said staff bruh
Man, i cried a little bit when he said that he wouldn't replace his staff with machines
he also said his COMPANIONS which is even more powerful
Viva la revolucion!
Need Xanax ?
He does not do it fpr fianancial reasons too. You can t take away the fact his product is sold as "artisanal" and builds his marketing on being different from other industrial butter. So actually the artisanal way of making is the most of the added wealth on his product so it s logic for him to keep workers
Zaporozhian Kozak really ruined it but made sense.
The guy who runs this butter-shop seems like a neat guy. He really appreciates his staff it looks like, talking about how unique and important each job is, going as far as thanking the guy with the paddles for interrupting his work to show how important it is.
He is very French, country French.
This man reminds me of my boss. I work as a luthier/guitar-tech in a very small music shop in Britanny, France, and my boss has the same kind of humor and respect for his employees. He is a self-made man who worked his ass off to make his shop what it is now. I would not be there today without him, and I wish everyone to find a job where you feel trusted and valued by your boss.

It’s almost like you should treat your workers like actual humans and not machines. We’re emotional animals. Idc who you are being told you’re doing a good job by someone who actually means it is going to lift you up
And he didn't even stop by saying it once..he kept going on for 2-3 times more.. Gem of a man😇
“we call it.... Marie Antoinette” 😂😂😂
*plays Marie Antoinette*

Someone: Parlez-vous français? Me: NON JE NE PARLE PAS FRANÇAIS
Seeing a person doing what they care about is so special! It's so much of a person's time captured in 15 minutes
What a wonderful, inspirational man. Full with the poetry of his life and sharing it with others. If only the world were full with such men and woman!
"It was still used 250 years ago, we call it Marie Antoinette"
Oh shit, niiiice, a bit of dark humor to spice up the butter
yeah she ended the same way as Louis XVI xD
In her shoes (and some quick thinking) I would have said “so that makes you Robespierre, nest pas?” with a laugh
And it's not just his humor it's the real word for it in french, national sense of humor I guess Eheh
When the butter sings, it cries. When it cries, it sings.
I think i could watch this all day...
BroAnarchy dude needs to get over himself. It’s just dairy...

No....
Iz la Poetíc !!!
BroAnarchy that’s stupidity. Grow a pair of testicles. No need to cry over a bit of churned milk.
@@BrandonRosenstrauch when people love what they do, they see it as their art. It's not about being emotional...
Such a small man Brandon
Absolutely loveddddd this man!!! 😂 😂 😂
You can tell he has so much love and joy for the work he does and for all the people around him. Such a sweet man, absolutely loved him! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I come from the Netherlands with all pur cows, yellow cheese and butter. I have eaten plenty of butter in my life around including in France. But nowhere have I eaten more tasty butter in my life as in Greece. I was in Epirus in Greece and the butter I had was out of this world good.
The best milk I have drank was in Albania near the Greek border, geographically speaking, same region (Epirus). The pastures are different, aromatic, high diversity, etc...
Yeah no one cares
@@LeJobastre1215 you apparently do, but it doesnt surprise me my French simpleton friend

The old guy is a hoot. Having fun will never be a job. When he employs people instead of machinery he is keeping the artisan alive in the next generation.
That guy handling the butter must have the softest hands in the world.
My thoughts exactly
Fr tho, or people who washes rice for decades lok
Pretty sure he should be wearing gloves though
