Its true that not having a certain charm with enough points and slots can bar you out of optimizing sets with an extra skill or 2, but deco rng can cause you to miss out on skills and builds entirely with no workaround. Especially with the final boss armor around, its easy to get a solid set of skills for any weapon.

OK, this is pretty damn hilarious! But to be honest, Old World armours aren't hard to understand. There's just a few key differences: 1: Rather than every single ability point giving you a small bonus, you are working towards point threshholds. In exchange, the ranks are often more meaningful. Generally speaking you pretty much always need +10 for Tier 1 of a skill 5 additional points for every new rank. For example: +10 in hearing gives you earplugs which completely negates normal monster roars. With +15 you gain High Grade Earplugs which negate all monster roars. 2: Gear can also have negative points. Certain abilities even have negative ranks, meaning that for example a build might have 10 negative points in vitality, resulting with you starting off with less base health. 3: Unlike in World where charms are craftable and decorations are obtained randomly, traditional MH games do it the other way around. You obtain Charms by mining and they have to a degree randomized skillpoints whereas decorations are simply craftable. You cannot upgrade either, instead you can simply craft stronger decorations, however that means that they will likely need more slots which also means that you cannot put them in every piece of armour. 4: Speaking off, slots and decorations aren't limited to High Rank anymore and you will generally find them on most pieces of gear. 5: Rather than having alpha, beta or gamma sets you usually have 2 sets of each armour: Blademaster and Gunner. With very few exceptions a set is usually only usable for either a melee fighter or a ranged fighter. If you currently have a bow or bowgun equipped you simply cannot wear Blademaster armour and vice versa, with most helmets being the exception. Blademaster armour has considerably higher defense whereas Gunner armour has better elemental resistances. Skills are also affected as skills that are exclusively usable on melee weapons like Handicraft or razor sharp won't even appear on gunner armour. 6: Gear slots: Unlike in World there are no different slot levels. There's simply a fixed amount, usually between one and three which determines how many and which decorations you slot in. High tier decorations usually will require at least two slots.
I never said there aren't a lot of differences, just that it isn't particularily hard to understand. As someone who started with a traditional MH game I can tell you that you can generally get the system down within the first few hours of play. It's only a little harder if you generally already have expectations because you know the system from World.
Meh, the world is a simpler system but more flexible by using one set. The old system is major pain in the net if you are trying to switch weapon, you are likely need to grind a whole new set of amor. Especially for G rank amor. That makes the game drag... alot.
Mhw: throws random shit together Every other mh game: spend 50 mins crafting and organizing decorations so you can farm one monster so you can do the same thing later
Actually, the most effective way to farm charms in Generations Ultimate is an ore event quest where you don't even get the ores. You just do the Brachydios subquest, end via subquest, and boom. 20+ charms in five minutes. The event isn't out yet though, so... ; _ ;
In all seriousness, I actually DO like the overall feel of synergy with the old skill system. For the most part, MHW's skill system just doesn't have it when you can literally just add skills a la carte.... (PS - Then there's the irony that every hunter's wearing a set added with Iceborne)
I really like the ability to just throw on a ton of quality of life skills and not have to worry about some of the annoying B.S. plus it lets you go for fashion and slot in the skills you need.
I've been playing Monster Hunter for around 4 years now starting from World, and when I first stumbled upon this video I didn't have a clue as to what anyone was saying. The man in yellow armor was practically speaking a foreign language to me. Every year I would come back to this video, having played some of the older games and would test myself to see if I had learned all the concepts mentioned in this video. After all these years, I finally understand what he's saying. I have become a nerd.
Something something Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate permanent charm table and charm manipulation. Something something charm sniping offline save death resets. ... Why do I love this game, again? Oh right... the stagger-spamming adept Heavy Bowgun and Aerial Hammer...
I'm so glad that after I heard about the locked charm tables in 3U, I found out I was on a pretty alright one and didn't waste my 800 hours of playtime. Still, someone out there probably spent a lot of time a cursed table and just ended up having to make due, which must've sucked.
I'm saying GIGGINOX is cooler, but it is still a Khezu ripoff Even if it's an all stats up Both in my opinion are...mediocre but they actually are cool at the very least
This is me trying to help my friends who started in World trying to get to G rank in freedom Unite. I told them they were not ready but no, they said they could do it easy....They never got past black Gravios.
Great video as Far as animation, art, and humor. Critiques: The sound mixing was off, but i liked the armor rattling ( The voices were too low and seemed to be at a similar level as the music), The master volume could be bumped up a bit too.
Listening to the whole skill and charm explanation brought back memories of my countless charm runs using the Sakura Method in Generations and save scumming the Melding Pot in 4U...all for the sole purpose of getting a +7 Handicraft talisman. Alas, RNGesus did not bless me.
*MHW Deviljho picks up a Plesioth and charges right for you* "DODGE THIS" But seriously though, Fashion Hunter or Casual Hunter ;P (even if "fashion" is just them rock hard abs of steel)
Love watching this every day I hop onto MHGU. Fun trying to teach the 'New Worlders' how we OG Hunters do it. *breaks out the graph paper and No.2 pencils*
Ah the long process of maximizing your skills for a good run of hunts. Until you notice you are one slot short because of the freaking charm! The good old days.
420Praiseit Gitgudneosucksasstoo hey I’m curious who is this “gold rathian armor guy” cause one time when I was new to monster hunter I made a post in hell about how “op” gold rath armor was. I know it’s a stretch, but I got chewed out for that shit and I don’t want that to follow me
This was pretty good! I been following you on Twitter and know you been struggling with it as your first big project and it came out pretty good for the first full animation. I know you said you were struggling a lot with lip syncing and it could use a BIT more work, but other then that it was good. Also cool to see Yaro in this! But since MHW is my first Monster Hunter game, I won't lie and say that a lot of the jokes in this went a little over my head XD
This was so good. As someone just getting into Monster Hunter from trying out Dauntless, but having friends who are *extremely* into Monster Hunter, I am seeing the humor on both sides of this. I shared this video with my friends, and they got a kick out of it as well. I've definitely heard the stories about how extensive the stats are, and how necessary they actually end up being. I'm trying to learn Hunting Horn, and I'm not sure how complex it can actually end up being, but the concept seems daunting. As someone who like bards in all shapes, sizes, and forms though, I had to try it out.
Thank you for creating the best RetroSpecter profile picture to date! (P.s., I see what you did there on your name. Personally, I prefer the number 13 as well and I've only recently learned about To Kill A Mockingbird for the first time)
now that im playing MHW these video's make so much more sense i originally watch stuff like this out of curiosity but man was i lost but now now i understand it's all relative
Casuals always dying, casuals always overkilling capture quest, casuals always send me flying or trip me, casuals always setting a trap for elder dragons, casuals always attack me or kicking me when quest is over.
Yellow guy teaching new world guy, This is giving me flashbacks to my days where I had a spreadsheet of weapons DP, weakness for my monsters, best mix builds and more. That took a year to understand DP
cant people have fun cuz u want to speed run sorry but not everyone is a speed runner if u are tho get a bunch of friends to do gunner with you lol if people cant have fun playing how they want what is the point even
Well... You kind of are, but as long as you are getting away with it... You don't really need to start minmaxing and worrying about mixed sets until late High or G rank
I always use a full set. Even with the ability to layer armor now i like just seeing what i can get out of a full set. Been doing it since 4u and it hasn't failed me yet
to put it simply, you basically look at a piece of armor's skill points along with your charms and decos, and match those together to try and make a set you want.
They're not that bad, they allow for sets that require specific talisman to be way easier to make simply do to the fact that they _allow_ duplicate talisman to drop otherwise, they would be even worse and far more RNG dependant
Newbies that only have monster hunter world: Just hit hunter rank 50, man monster hunter generations ultimate will be so easy. After getting mhgu: WHY DO I KEEP FLEXING AFTER EVERY POTION!!!! WHY DOES A PINK MONKEY FARTING ON ME KEEP ME FROM USING POTIONS!!!!
Those problems don't sound any different from World. Potions take _forever_ to drink, and getting hit by anything (even merely being afflicted with poison because you didn't see the puddle) interrupts the heal and wastes the potion.
That is true but in world you are free to walk around and possibly avoid an attack, while as in other monster hunter titles you are immobilized and much more open to attack. Also. . . swivel here.
@@Jbirdie03 more open to attack, but significantly less likely to wander into another monster and aggro _that_ or stumble into an environmental hazard. The movement isn't all that fast either, being slower than walking with a HBG drawn, with the speed of the monsters and the size of their hitboxes you might as well be stationary.
Looking back at this as a long time fan i do miss having negitive skills, gave a sense of pro's and cons to things and added a level of complexity you could outright ignore with no real consequence besides being a little bad at something. Obviously i don't miss everything because they did streamline a lot of things, but i do miss some things. For instance gunner armors, i loved gunner armor designs. I hope they bring them back or give an option to change armor looks to appear as a gunner version
But we dont need to manage spreadsheets, we have programs to do that for us. Serious how long would it take to get anything done without ASS in the old system
As someone who has only played 4u and world, I am VERY happy with the new skill system. It's just better for the player. I know there was a masochistic satisfaction in lining up your build just right and unparalleled ecstasy when you get a great charm, but holy shit those systems were a nightmare to understand and deal with.
I'd love to see a middle ground. World made it so it's WAY too easy to have EVERYTHING, but in Gen/GU/Older games, it feels like a chore to try and create builds, especially for new players.
Monster Hunter makes you analyze armor in every game imaginable. It's kinda funny talking to people who tried Monster Hunter World that complain that the attributes are too complicated, that's when I pull out my spread sheets for mixed sets.
Meh... I solo'd Alatreon with a non-mixed set and enjoyed doing it (Planning on doing the same with G-Rank). Don't worry about being "casuals" guys, play the game however you like, as long as you're having a fun experience. Great animation, by the way~!
This brought me back to my days in Tri when this jerkoff in high rank Helios Armor was going on about how the extra two slots in his armor made him better than me and proceeded to call me an idiot for not farming Lagiacrus plates. I loved this video in every which way. It doesn’t teeter into any sort of copying of the likes of NCHProductions or TerminalMontage but still has the same quality. Truly amazing, and an instant sub. This made me actually smirk from the absurd accuracy and making me ashamed for understanding every word the gold armor hunter was saying. Keep up the brilliant work!

6: Gear slots: Unlike in World there are no different slot levels. There's simply a fixed amount, usually between one and three which determines how many and which decorations you slot in. High tier decorations usually will require at least two slots.
my brain died
"They're not hard to understand!"
*Proceeds to write an entire essay*
Uuuuh....huh...
I never said there aren't a lot of differences, just that it isn't particularily hard to understand. As someone who started with a traditional MH game I can tell you that you can generally get the system down within the first few hours of play. It's only a little harder if you generally already have expectations because you know the system from World.
This replies is pretty effing hilarious! Oh man how perfect, thanks for the laugh.
Meh, the world is a simpler system but more flexible by using one set. The old system is major pain in the net if you are trying to switch weapon, you are likely need to grind a whole new set of amor. Especially for G rank amor. That makes the game drag... alot.
Take a shot every time someone calls their set a build.
Mhw: throws random shit together
Every other mh game: spend 50 mins crafting and organizing decorations so you can farm one monster so you can do the same thing later
Let's all be honest, Charms tables are cancer.
@Brandon Andres you're god damn right
Charm Tables are so large since 4u that they dont matter
I thought they got rid of them from 4u onwards
p3rd and its multiple restarts just to get the right charm
Actually, the most effective way to farm charms in Generations Ultimate is an ore event quest where you don't even get the ores. You just do the Brachydios subquest, end via subquest, and boom. 20+ charms in five minutes. The event isn't out yet though, so... ; _ ;
New world armour is a blessing, but there’s an undeniable satisfaction when you get that one charm to complete an old world set
This is one of those gem videos that I somehow just get the urge to rewatch from time to time.
In all seriousness, I actually DO like the overall feel of synergy with the old skill system. For the most part, MHW's skill system just doesn't have it when you can literally just add skills a la carte....
(PS - Then there's the irony that every hunter's wearing a set added with Iceborne)
Fashion makes the deadly hunter, not a skill that lets me make my own dung bombs.
Stratelier I base it off looks if at least one of the abilities applies to my weapon and if it has decent defense compared to my last armor.
FASHION HUNTERS UNITE
Stratelier good thing we can do both now with the transmod thing they added in mhgu
I really like the ability to just throw on a ton of quality of life skills and not have to worry about some of the annoying B.S. plus it lets you go for fashion and slot in the skills you need.
I’m literally the dude in the yellow and i’m screaming
1:16 Me trying to make my own mixed armor set.
Pretty much all of my mixed armor I make myself, I never used Athenas ASS. Not until I got 100+ into late game 4U.
Zachary Coutts Same
I just use Kiranico and see what i can do by myself xd
Really fun, MHGH animations are rare now.
When hunters say the basics, it's basically everything
I've been playing Monster Hunter for around 4 years now starting from World, and when I first stumbled upon this video I didn't have a clue as to what anyone was saying. The man in yellow armor was practically speaking a foreign language to me.
Every year I would come back to this video, having played some of the older games and would test myself to see if I had learned all the concepts mentioned in this video.
After all these years, I finally understand what he's saying. I have become a nerd.
That’s the good old monster Hunter talk I know and love and missed.
There's something about the animation here that's really satisfying.
I prefer Gigginox to Khezu. Sorry. One looks like a freak alien. The other looks like a naked, veiny chicken.
I'm saying GIGGINOX is cooler, but it is still a Khezu ripoff
Even if it's an all stats up
Both in my opinion are...mediocre but they actually are cool at the very least
Oh god...we G-Rank veterans can relate to the yellow boi soooo much....
This is me trying to help my friends who started in World trying to get to G rank in freedom Unite. I told them they were not ready but no, they said they could do it easy....They never got past black Gravios.
Man i never finished unite, dual black diablos on g-rank is where i quit, that shit wasnt fun anymore
@@wlanalex oh it was for those who unlocked migatte no gokui right there in the middle of the fight
Natural selection had to play its part at some point
Going feom going from world straight to FU, im surprised they made trough silver rathalos and rajang
Ohh those were the days lol
Great video as Far as animation, art, and humor. Critiques: The sound mixing was off, but i liked the armor rattling ( The voices were too low and seemed to be at a similar level as the music), The master volume could be bumped up a bit too.
Being an SnS main, the guy that was oiling his sword just fucking cracked me up,cause in reality that is all i do! xD
I just noticed his hand is backwards at 1:07 and I can't unsee that now
Dude, this is seriously one of the funniest Monster Hunter Animation I've seen!
Every time a new monster hunter is announced this always comes to mind
I love being a FU hipster because I can say "FU!" and only the other people that FU'd truly know...
I'm taking about green plesioth btw...
The good old days
I don't know what is sadder. The pro explaining to the rookie the optimal loadout in a complicated way or that I followed him completely with ease.
Absolutely like deserving
Found your video in Twitter and fortunately clicked on It. Nice job
I just started showing my buddy the old world after playing world and Iceborne. This came to mind
Listening to the whole skill and charm explanation brought back memories of my countless charm runs using the Sakura Method in Generations and save scumming the Melding Pot in 4U...all for the sole purpose of getting a +7 Handicraft talisman.
Alas, RNGesus did not bless me.
Actually criminal this doesn't have more views and like man great job
Playing this video on on 2X when the rant starts will give you the new world players view
Ha, who care abouts skills, optimization and all that jazz when you're fabulous!
Yup. With timing and care you can beat everything naked!
*MHW Deviljho picks up a Plesioth and charges right for you* "DODGE THIS"
But seriously though, Fashion Hunter or Casual Hunter ;P
(even if "fashion" is just them rock hard abs of steel)
Even if I’m the prettiest Hunter around knowing my set isn’t optimal just bugs me internally
This hits me too facking hard, im the only old world hunter in a group of 8, i might've had a moment exacly like this
Love watching this every day I hop onto MHGU. Fun trying to teach the 'New Worlders' how we OG Hunters do it. *breaks out the graph paper and No.2 pencils*
Ah the long process of maximizing your skills for a good run of hunts. Until you notice you are one slot short because of the freaking charm! The good old days.
Bless the nesset armor and transmoggin
Old world stuff was pretty interesting, but here's to it dying in world and rise. Cheers, the series is looking bright
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Everyone coming in from MHW should just play cat! boom.
Everyone should just play cats anyway
Let's get the entire community playing cats so we can rename the series to Meownster Hunter
doing a prowler only run i miss havign nice and shiny armor and weapons and a lance but damm big piercing a gammoth is soo satisfying whit a prowler
Nah Prowlers are too hard for MHW baby brains.
I don’t like to be toxic about video games. But I couldn’t agree more.
420Praiseit Gitgudneosucksasstoo hey I’m curious who is this “gold rathian armor guy” cause one time when I was new to monster hunter I made a post in hell about how “op” gold rath armor was. I know it’s a stretch, but I got chewed out for that shit and I don’t want that to follow me
I have overwhelmed a few of my friends doing exactly that. Even ended one of the conversations with “you casual”
This video speaks to me
This was pretty good!
I hope this blows up that was awesome.
Thank you for creating the best RetroSpecter profile picture to date!
(P.s., I see what you did there on your name. Personally, I prefer the number 13 as well and I've only recently learned about To Kill A Mockingbird for the first time)
*PTSD KICKING IN*
And the thing is, what he's teaching you is actually stuff you should know already.
The voice of the guy in yellow reminds me of the villain in crash of the titans. lol
now that im playing MHW these video's make so much more sense i originally watch stuff like this out of curiosity but man was i lost but now now i understand it's all relative
Aw, dude, I love your comic strips. Nice to see you making animations. I shall sub now.
One of the funniest animations I've seen in some time :D :D :D
Sums up everything perfectly and the yellow guy is so on point.
Great job :)
Of course Golden Lune armor guy would talk about negative skills, considering he’s chilling out with -55 thunder resistance...
Doesn't matter.
He is pro!
He probably has a Thunder Res Armor set somewhere.
@@xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx ahahah that ivory lagiacrus set is lookin pretty good right now 👌🏻
Casuals always dying, casuals always overkilling capture quest, casuals always send me flying or trip me, casuals always setting a trap for elder dragons, casuals always attack me or kicking me when quest is over.
1:35 should become a meme
Yellow guy teaching new world guy, This is giving me flashbacks to my days where I had a spreadsheet of weapons DP, weakness for my monsters, best mix builds and more.
That took a year to understand DP
Am I casual?
cause all I ever do is wear entire monster armor sets. And switch am out depending on the monster
That or adept my way to victory
Yes, yes you are. And if you're having fun then keep doing it. Your quests will run a little longer, thats about it.
cant people have fun cuz u want to speed run
sorry but not everyone is a speed runner if u are tho get a bunch of friends to do gunner with you lol
if people cant have fun playing how they want what is the point even
Fun is for fking casuals 😉
Well... You kind of are, but as long as you are getting away with it... You don't really need to start minmaxing and worrying about mixed sets until late High or G rank
@@darthplagueis13 even this is a bit iffy, I solo'ed G Rank not giving a damn about min maxing. It was 4U but still.
This is actually the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in ages and has made my night
I always use a full set. Even with the ability to layer armor now i like just seeing what i can get out of a full set. Been doing it since 4u and it hasn't failed me yet
I love it due to how accurate it is to how I tried helping my friend (new world hunter) to 4U.
"Talks about optimising armor sets"
*Wears full Gold Rathian*
lol Great animation!
to put it simply, you basically look at a piece of armor's skill points along with your charms and decos, and match those together to try and make a set you want.
why am I still playing MH3U and understanding everything the hunter in (Gold Rathian?) armor is saying?!
wait is that 3u?
@@indahdzh5026 Yeah, charm tables were in 3U I believe. Worst design choice in 3rd Generation by far.
Charm tables are still a thing, and the locked charm tables were a bug.
@@rosecatse Wait really? I thought that the curse was only relegated to 3U...
They're not that bad, they allow for sets that require specific talisman to be way easier to make simply do to the fact that they _allow_ duplicate talisman to drop
otherwise, they would be even worse and far more RNG dependant
This is like my favorite MH video of all time, never gets old
Blasphemy!
WolfyMelon hello there
This just popped into my recommended yesterday, conveniently while I was at a friend’s house that feels the exact same way. Good times, good times
Congalala is good
*cough* emerald congalala *cough*
I really felt the "You.... Fucking CASUALS..." at the end there lol
The reason why you don't have to approach casuals is because they won't listen until they understand the harsh truth of the game.
Your bigger project made my small project go go big project
Looking back at this as a long time fan i do miss having negitive skills, gave a sense of pro's and cons to things and added a level of complexity you could outright ignore with no real consequence besides being a little bad at something.
Obviously i don't miss everything because they did streamline a lot of things, but i do miss some things.
For instance gunner armors, i loved gunner armor designs. I hope they bring them back or give an option to change armor looks to appear as a gunner version
But we dont need to manage spreadsheets, we have programs to do that for us.
Serious how long would it take to get anything done without ASS in the old system
Umm... Three days?
@@gregorymckenzie7511
Oof
What's that?
@@alwest4472 "Athena's Armor Search System". It was a program for building armor sets in pre-World Monster Hunter games.
Honestly? It used to take me 15-30 minutes with a pen and paper. I dont miss it tho
Monster hunter stuff aside, I appreciate the voice-work done here. It’s solid stuff, especially compared to other animator’s VO in their vids.
As someone who has only played 4u and world, I am VERY happy with the new skill system. It's just better for the player.
I know there was a masochistic satisfaction in lining up your build just right and unparalleled ecstasy when you get a great charm, but holy shit those systems were a nightmare to understand and deal with.
Noob
Filthy casual
Git gud please
Only casuals and skrubs rely on skills.
I'd love to see a middle ground. World made it so it's WAY too easy to have EVERYTHING, but in Gen/GU/Older games, it feels like a chore to try and create builds, especially for new players.
I like to return once in a while to this video to have a good laugh, cause that's the good old charm of older MH games!
When your stuck at +9...😂😂👌
who still remembers this vid?
I’m confused... I under stood the yellow guy for 99% of what he said yet i have the mentality of the casual... I’m confused on where I fit now..
that moment when you watch it again... and you now UNDERSTAND
Have i mentioned *"CrIt BoOsT"*
the ending art made it so fking epic for no reason
2:56 lmao
Monster Hunter makes you analyze armor in every game imaginable. It's kinda funny talking to people who tried Monster Hunter World that complain that the attributes are too complicated, that's when I pull out my spread sheets for mixed sets.
Meh... I solo'd Alatreon with a non-mixed set and enjoyed doing it (Planning on doing the same with G-Rank). Don't worry about being "casuals" guys, play the game however you like, as long as you're having a fun experience. Great animation, by the way~!
This connected to me on a spiritual level
Meanwhile rise players.....WTF IS A BLADE MASTER ARMOR???
their probably thinking it's an event armor set, lol!
World players....WTF IS GUNNER ARMOR??
@@lubbo5261 at least world had 2 armor sets for each monster
This brought me back to my days in Tri when this jerkoff in high rank Helios Armor was going on about how the extra two slots in his armor made him better than me and proceeded to call me an idiot for not farming Lagiacrus plates.
I loved this video in every which way. It doesn’t teeter into any sort of copying of the likes of NCHProductions or TerminalMontage but still has the same quality. Truly amazing, and an instant sub. This made me actually smirk from the absurd accuracy and making me ashamed for understanding every word the gold armor hunter was saying.
Keep up the brilliant work!
