well you know, he keeps talking about "sports" in the video and that might be part of the problem. ITF Taekwondo is a martial art. From day one, it is practiced as an intellectual and spiritual pursuit. In a tournament of real martial arts, if you win and then run around the mat yelling about how you're the greatest, guess what. You just forfeited the match to the opponent. Same as if you are taunting the opponent before it starts, like they do in UFC/MMA. You go in there respectfully. You bow to the instructor, bow to the opponent, optionally touch gloves, then begin. When you're done, you bow to each other, bow the to the instructor, then the instructor raises the hand of the guy who won. Nobody runs around yelling they are the greatest. Plus we never go 100% power in sparring. That's how you get hurt. Sparring is supposed to be a way to develop your skills and figure out what works and what does not work for your body. For example, if I never sparred, I would not know that I'm not good at kicking to the head. To me a kick is a strike to the torso, lol. But you definitely don't want to grapple 100% power either, because then you would actually break people's arms, actually break their neck, etc.

@@johnthomas1422bjj is hand to hand combat. If you knew anything about self defense you’d know about the 21 foot rule. What makes you think bjj guys aren’t carrying? 💀
Thanks for pointing that out. When BJJ made a point to strip Jigaro Kano out of the dojo, they also stripped out mutual welfare and benefit, and every other character building aspect of Judo, and turned it into a thug culture. Absolutely disgusting treatment of an uke...
Just have to find a good culture to avoid injuries as much as you can. You don’t need some punk kid yanking on some shit before you get the chance to tap.
I enrolled my grandson into Jiu Jitsu and he excelled at it. After about three months I met a some former Jiu Jitsu practitioners who warned me about the inevitable injures that will come and met some 30 year olds who have injuries that required quitting the sport. If you want to get is shape and learn some practical maneuvers, I would recommend the sport but if you want to compete, I'd think twice about it.
I also wish to avoid competing, But a fair point an instructor made is that competing helps prepare for a self defence situation as it's higher stress which saps energy quicker. This can be a good motivator to see where conditioning needs to be to prevail. To beat confident trained opponents consistently is a higher bar than an untrained opponent. And if the higher bar can be met, the probability the lower one is cleared easily increases. That said, I'll likely avoid it as they are unknown training partners. At my gym I can go against the guys who compete and askfor that intensity level if I wish. Till then I'll try to avoid those who seem careless enough to cause injury.
@@BenWeeks-ca you get hurt way more doing martial arts then through self defense situation (most of the times because only few people get into one) ...only for those people who read this and want to start martial art because of self defense.
It’s all about the gym. At the gym I go to we take care of our training partners we do go hard we focus a lot of stand up more then most gyms in the state. And we have only had a few black eyes a broken nose and popped ribs from three people in the three years we have been open.
you got me bud, I have been watching you for some time now, I feel better now I got that off my chest. I WAS LIKE WTH! LOL I look forward to more of your content and shenanigans.
Old timer here, worst injuries since ~1995: Ego, cracked rib from the receiving end of a deceivingly low amplitude no gi harai goshi in training, partially unattached right bicep at the elbow (still visible) , completely popped/unattached collateral ligament between 1st and 2nd phalanx on my left ring finger 3 separate times (eventually healed each time!!), some minor knee and ankle popping / swelling from various things, a few black eyes, a few good nut shots, and a good bit of knee arthritis, lol. I still train (like a bum) and still love the art!
As a wrestler, every time I have visited jiu jitsu gyms or classes/clubs they have always been the most egotistical and disrespectful people I have ever met
Sometimes I feel like BJJ values control and domination more than other grappling arts. Where this would either select people who like to control and dominate into the sport. Alternatively some toxic behaviour might get replicated in gyms. I feel like giving too much value to belt hierarchy is a part of this. Although obviously there are many great and emotionally healthy BJJ athletes as well. I do feel like judo creates healthier people (I'm not too familiair with wrestling). I also think the way the Gracie's took judo techniques and uniform (for free) and monetized it the way they did was kind of douchebag-like. Also if you look at the behaviour of the older Gracies and the way this influenced the sport there seems to be a lower level of maturity and wisdom than most other martial arts. Maybe also because there always seemed to be a desire to prove how effective BJJ is, which I think comes partly from the fact that it was a family thing for the Gracies and partly because it often looks kind of lame to the untrained eye. That being said, I like practicing BJJ and think it has great self-defense applicability as well (depending on the scenario of course).
@@davidd854 yeah even the guy in the video is dancing like a tool at the end. I honestly think bjj just gives chumps with crappy behavior, like racists, bullies, etc who were too timid cause they're idiots, a way to talk crap and pick on people cause now "they can fight."

Excellent and really funny. I wonder how many people actually watched until the end, there is a lot of injuries you can pick up, but if you're just doing it as a recreational sport or martial art, you don't have to have the competitive head and you can tap out at any given point, at the end of the day over 90% of people practising Brazilian jiu, jitsu Judo or any other grappling system have to go to work the next day so it's better to tap then something go snap. I did Jiu-Jitsu for several years. I can't say I regret it. I liked doing it. But I didn't make it into my religion by going 10 times a week. But this video has a lot of great points (Most of the same could be said about any martial art). I quit going when the same guy that busted my lip a couple of times through aggressive rolling, and complained about me grabbing his shirt (he was training for no gi), dislocated my knee. I was in therapy for six months. My wife asked me if I wanted to go back because she was boxing. I told her I'd rather be able to walk when I'm 60. The guy that runs the place is a nut job that started out for the love of the sport and has degenerated into only caring about the cash. He only pays his employees with lessons. And these saps work for nothing to get a membership for years. Some even provide donations. I've heard its like $300 per month at this point. I know enough that I can take care of myself. Parody or not the video makes real points to consider.
$300/month? That's crazy. He better be some famous MMA/BJJ fighter. The place I train at charges $180, and they're considered one of the pricier gyms in the area. And they have a very big, clean place with full staff

Couldn’t agree more but my story is even worse because in my day there were no UA-cam channels or BJJ fanatics I had to spend thousands on seminars, privates, travel and eventually books, magazines, VHS/DVDs. I started in the late 90s and all there was in my area was ghetto street fighters, wrestlers, military guys (especially Marines), and big lunatic body builders so every battle won came with multiple injuries, NOBODY knew how to just roll it was always war. Also getting promoted in the late 90s early 2000s was near impossible, I took privates, seminars, did everything I could possibly do to be good and I was good I constantly technically destroyed higher ranking belts at multiple academies and couldn’t get promoted for years because I refused to absolutely worship some cocking greedy arrogant Brazilian. Now my body is a mangled mess, and I was late to party when it comes to having an income and providing for my family. There were very few schools and fewer black belts especially in the Midwest so everything you did associated with BJJ was very expensive. I even lived in Brazil for over a year. I can confirm 100% that if you’re thinking about making a life out of BJJ….DON’T!! .. the ROI is disastrous, just do it for a hobby and be realistic with your expectations.
You scared me for a second, I'm actually doing jiu jitsu rn at 17, my dad is training me and my brother, we have our own gym at our house and it's going really well rn. Ik jiu jitsu isn't the best martial art, but i'm still happy to be able to learn how to fight and defend my mom and sister when I have to.
Can't wait to see how many people you catch either obviously not watching the whole video or has an edited comment from not watching the entire video!! lol, good stuff brother!
I know its an april fools video, but I actually agree totally with the injuries part, when I broke my hand in competition once (its fully healed now, luckily) I asked myself "what is the point?" and contemplated quitting. Then I started to get neck pains etc. I decided to work a lot on body conditioning on the side, and turns out that worked for me. I think bjj coaches should stress more the aspect of body conditioning, tell people to lift weights and focus particularly on back and neck conditioning.
first and foremost, great April fools... on to my musings - i constantly reflect on whether or not Jiu Jitsu is worth it because of all the reasons you mentioned and more... especially starting at 32. At the end of the day I practice jiu jitsu because as I assume, as is true with many martial arts, they transcend all these things. It's more of a spiritual journey for me. I could achieve this with many different martial arts... but at the end of the day, testing my mental and physical fortitude, and learning where my heart is at under pressure, is invaluable. I actually trip out on people who are in it for fame, or ego, or domination of the other. It's such a personal thing for me, I don't understand how other people get off on being inauthentic hacks... and I don't mean Gordon Ryan, love or hate the man for his antics, he is not a hack. But people who use wrestling and athleticism to circumvent bad BJJ technique... like what are you so proud of? seems like they have all completely missed the point of discipline, skill acquisition, and mastery. .. testing ones self vs. proving something based on other peoples performance, or lack thereof.
Im not gonna lie I dead thought you were serious I forgot it was April fools 😂 On a serious note I have some interest in BJJ since I want to have some grappling skills I did just a couple classes so far just learning the basics my priority is muay thai however. Are the things in this video valid and something I have to be mindful of?
The injuries can happen if you go with spazzes. The other two points aren’t that crazy to worry about. It all comes down to if you’re at a red flag gym
I mean, funny video, but some of your points hit close to home. Especially the egos. Every time I hang out with jiujitsu guys, they want to do couch jiujitsu against me. Like dude I just want to eat chicken wings and watch the UFC.
Dude, I started Jujitsu a year ago after 15 years of boxing and find you guys are little bit more sensitive than boxers, and fair enough it’s a cerebral sport. In boxing there are no belts, there is no tapping out, you don’t just get little slaps to the head but you get your head taken off and your brain banged up so you end up in little dream worlds for days after from the concussions. I love jujitsu and it’s tough yes but not overly so, the main thing is it’s easy on the brain and you just get damaged limbs which can heal. I think you are over egging it abit.
Everybody is welcome to their own opinions. I highly would disagree that you wasted your life though. You've worked for and earned something so many people wish to obtain and never do. One day you might be forced to use the skills you learned to protect yourself or your family and no normal person will survive a fight with a black belt bjj guy. I've been through it quite a few times in street fights, bar fights, and once when a much larger guy forced himself into my mother's house when i was there. Punched my 60 year old mother in the mouth and busted right through her door. I met him just as he was about to enter her hallway and it went down from there. He was 6'3 220 and i at that time was only 5'6 170. He got manhandled like a little girl. So i think there's a ton of value in learning the skill. Of course you're welcome to your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. Sometimes i think we over look certain aspects though.
Your "joke" has a lot of truth in it, at least in my experience. I was injured a lot in Jujitsu (including one very serious shoulder injury) and belts generally su ck. Eight years of Muay Thai, it fixed my injuries from Jujitsu, and I didn't get a single serious injury training it. And no belts.
Many people have had guns thinking that they didn't need to learn hand-to-hand combat until they had their weapons taken from them and used against them. Many people also thought they didn't need to learn jiujitsu until they ended up on the ground or went to court because they struck someone when they didn't need to. Jiujitsu isn't the only answer, but it's a vital and large piece of the puzzle. Don't wait until it's too late to learn this lesson.
I knew this was an April Fool's joke right from the start, the problem is... it's all true :/ I'm not at all convinced my purple belt was worth all I went through to get it.
Joe Brogan lied to you. Yea now he's promoting Muay Thai. People can do the same as BJJ people, but standing up. The whole "power slam" issue with BBJ was a reality check.
Severely dislocated finger and torn knee cartilage (from a blue belt trying to do flying guard on me and missed) in my first year. Have moved twice since then but was lucky enough to train with 2 UFC veterans in the first two years (Colton Smith and Rich Clementi). Had to step away for the last 3 years due to work commitments (contract K9 handler) but hoping to pick back up when I move from Fl to AZ this summer. Great video!
I could literally only do jiu jitsu for a couple years before my body gave out. I'm probably genetically more fragile than many people, but I'm crippled for life from two years of hard training.

gentle art, it is sir.
damn what started a joke may have actually talked me into quitting jiu jitsu after 15 years...

This had me in tears 😂
I've never seen one man catapult another lake that before. It was majestic
Depends on reason. I practice it for excercise, cardio and to work my brain. I find it perfectly suited for that purpose for me
Just have to find a good culture to avoid injuries as much as you can. You don’t need some punk kid yanking on some shit before you get the chance to tap.
Don't forget, you get to hug grown men. That is what bjj is really about, the hugging.
@@johnthomas1422Wowww! I didnt know hugging can make people into ufc champions!! 😂
True
Yup. That's what they do.
@@Runner15879 Nah I don't agree with that. If you want to learn grappling you still have to go through a beginning period in which you lose all the time, which would filter out many of the people you talk about
Learning a martial art which involves sparring is essentially a hard activity which will weed out the weak kind of bullies.
Keep practising everyone! Get a good training partner train safe and don't let your ego get in the way and enjoy what you are doing
I know this video is satire but more people need to understand that time you enjoy wasting isn't time wasted.
Tell that to the furries. Wasting time is wasting time. If hugging grown men is your thing, bjj isn't a waste of time. It's also not a martial art when a child armed with pepper spray beats it 100% of the time.

@@johnthomas1422 if you had only commented once, it would’ve been funny and people could’ve taken it as an April fools joke just like this video, but you outed yourself and your inability to fight 😂
Guys that absolute Crazy.. I live in Germany and here a membership for a good Gym where you have like many courses to do is like 70-80€.. the most people in Germany would consider that as too expensive here.
I’ve trained also like a year Bjj it’s nice and I liked it but I always had that bad feeling that those guys live for there ego. It was not like you train with partners it was like you train with enemies and for me that can’t be the point of a sport, later than I tried judo and it was beautiful but the gym off offer it just 2x a weak at bad times where I do mostly work so it don’t work out well. I think I will try it again I’m quite young 24.
I can completely understand why you quit bro
so you choose the shittiest gym in existence and blame it on the sport? cool
@@ysaackfranco2825 No. I realize the gym is money focused. But I also realize that the people that take part in the sport are also very MMA focused. When I came to this gym people made fun that I had a traditional uniform. And that was my second such gym. But the prices and attitudes of the people leave a lot to be desired. One time I asked about my belt status. As I was doing very well against blue belts. And the only way to rank was to roll when the master instructor was present. A relative of the Gracie's. So people would get super aggressive. The owner said I had to decide on my priorities. Jiu jitsu or my job. I quit that gym that day.
It is very true. He threw in the April Fool's joke as a disclaimer to cover his back. So he doesn't look like a traitor

What’s actually really sad is that everything you said is factual, outside of the “waste of time” part.

I was preparing a comment on the impact of gym culture…..until the last 3 seconds……and you go me good bro!
I was ready to put my internet debate glasses on and unleash the fury. Ya got me. 🙃

I knew it from the start but didn't think of the date. So I waited for the smash moment you talk about your real thoughts...
Bruv, finish the video😂
Why its more sensitive.but striking is harder for sure
You redeemed yourself with Rick Astley at the end!!!!

The dancing dawg is the most important and serious thing in this video
