@testtube9423 you need to try that hard if you want to compete because in competition everyone fights like that. Training at 80% all the time then fighting an opponent 100% puts you at a massive disadvantage in timing and effort.
As a new white belt that has been drilling being submitted for a while now, I can say that I'm way better at getting submitted than you are, Tyler. My opponents often tell me that I am one of the best at getting guillotined and they have never submitted anyone quite as fast before sparring with me. It's the best compliment a new practitioner can get IMO...
Jake is awesome and always has been. He wrestled varsity as a 7th grader and won the biggest high school wrestling tournament in the country that year. He was the youngest person to ever win that tourney at the time. He used to whip my butt everyday in practice when we were in the same weight class, and wrestling him like that made me the best I ever turned out to be, which was not all that good in comparison. The best thing about him is his personality, just a great and kind person who never had an ego like others of his caliber do.
Jake Clark dropped into our gym once. I had no idea who he was. Rolled with him. I'm a white belt at the time. He let me work for about 10 seconds, then submitted me. Let me work ... submitted me. Repeat for 5 minutes. I got suspicious he was someone when the coach took a selfie with him at the end of open mat. Of course, no one told me who he was until he left and had made hamburger out of me.
I had Mike Graves from TUF pop in at my gym once and he was wearing a purple belt so old that i thought it was white. I was new blue at the time and he just destroyed me over and over. I only found out who he was afterwards 😭
It is but at the same time some people do just feel strong when you roll with them. I used to roll with a guy who was a purple and then brown belt while I was there and he had a wrestling background. Very skilled but also just had an extremely strong squeeze. I could imagine a Greco Olympian alternate is probably freakishly strong lol.
To be fair, the guy wasn't really fighting with jiu jitsu. He was basically just wrestling. There was plenty of technique, but it was all wrestling energy, not BJJ. Wrestling is all about dominating the opponent and wadding them up in a ball until they quit. BJJ is the opposite. It's about moving an playing back and forth until I catch you or you catch me. It's super annoying to trying to roll with a wrestler, because it's usually just a stalemate. They generally are very good at takedowns and control, but not very good at submissions. It's always a treat having the Newb BJJ guy/ ex-wrestler trying to rape choke you from guard.
