Car vs. Cannon - Damage Simulation of a Truck + Car Under Machine Gun Fire

- Complex car destruction simulation made in Blender. The model is based on the actual construction design FEM model (LS-DYNA) of that car and it is simulated with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB) + Fracture Modifier (FM) physics tools.
The BCB is a structural simulation software developed for building collapse simulations and this is the first time it is used to simulate a vehicle. The goal is to make vehicle simulations more realistic by using real world parameters and by simulating every piece of the car physically.
Having said that and before you ask, this is not a game. Perhaps GTA X will support this in 20 years but current hardware is not there yet, sorry. :)
Some stats for nerds:
Car - 1.8m triangles in 3k elements connected with 100k constraints
Simulation time - 8 sec. per frame (32 min. per 10 sec. simulation time)
Render time - It's just OpenGL, 1 sec. per frame

I have my doubts about the accuracy of rigidbodies for simulating metal; a mass-spring network (like the BeamNG physics engine) or a finite element method based simulation may yield better results due to the deforming nature of metal. Rigidbodies are probably more suited to stiffer, non-elastic materials of brittle nature.
it is possible but it becomes very very slow due to how much rigid bodie constraints want to be elastic and loose energy every frame u have to use alot of substeps
I've been following the progress of FM.
I'm very much impressed and I'm sure it'll be more flexible and dynamic regarding destruction than Cell Fracture and RDBLab, even though the latter does provide awesome results if used correctly. 🙂

If you still do these simulations could you consider simulating the effects of black powder on various structures? (like in howitzer and mortar shells from the Napoleonic wars)

How do you setup the model with the constraints? Is this done all by hand?
No, it's an automated process, but you can define element groups with different parameters.

There are some helpful links on the page. Unfortunately these vehicle simulations are not exactly easy to reproduce, I would recommend to start with easier car simulations for which you'll certainly find tutorials on UA-cam. And simulations made with Blender 2.79 FM can be exported to other Blender versions using point cache formats such as Alembic, MDD or PC2. I hope this helps.
