- Complex car destruction simulation made in Blender. The model is based on the actual construction design FEM model (LS-DYNA) of that car and it is simulated with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB) + Fracture Modifier (FM) physics tools.
The BCB is a structural simulation software developed for building collapse simulations and this is the first time it is used to simulate a vehicle. The goal is to make vehicle simulations more realistic by using real world parameters and by simulating every piece of the car physically.
Having said that and before you ask, this is not a game. Perhaps GTA X will support this in 20 years but current hardware is not there yet, sorry. :)
Some stats for nerds:
Car - 1.8m triangles in 3k elements connected with 100k constraints
Simulation time - 8 sec. per frame (32 min. per 10 sec. simulation time)
Render time - It's just OpenGL, 1 sec. per frame

Been watching for years. great video. I thing the tearing part should be a stronger though from footage I've seen of car scraping and things.. I think it will be perfect after that though.

what if for the frame and body of the car, soft body physics are used. but for the mechanical parts like the engine, transmission, etc. BCB is used. This would be a hybrid of different simulation techniques and could be interesting if the software allows it.

You should give EA Sports some pointers. Their crash model for the F1 game is abysmal!
Those aren't hardware limitations those are licensing limitations. Basically the FIA does not want to see its cars get crushed, torn to pieces or otherwise destroyed, despite the fact that such things do happen in reality from time to time. Anyway, if you wish to make an F1 game with real cars, drivers and championships you'll have to play by their rules.

Come to think of it, I don't think many of us would actually want this see this thing in GTA. At least not as a compulsory setting. I mean what the hell are you supposed to do in a car action game where cars wouldn't last 15 seconds? On the other hand, I would love to see this in something like BeamNG. If you hadn't done so already I think you should definitely reach out to the guys behind BeamNG and see if you can share some experiences with them. I think they might even have some technical knowhow on how to bring this whole thing more into real-time rendering territory.
