    This is awesome! would love to see the other side of the process where you load your prints into the program and layout your design on them. The whole process in one video would be even cooler kinda like the build videos.

    I was already planning on doing this to the P-51 kit. I have a lot of experience making texture maps for 3D modelling, so this technique seems a natural! Can you say rivet detail??
    Is there any other reason to remove the paper from the foam except increased strength?? It can't add that much weight.
    You could also use the full sheet avery lables and not mess with the 3M 77 spray. That would work well for making decals too if you don't want to do a full skin. Less messy too.

  • @TheManfet
    @TheManfet 8 років тому +1

    this could actually be a good idea for us Europeans. if you have to scratch build anyway, gluing on the skin first is no problem, probably makes it even easier and since Depron seems not to be stiff enough for some planes, it could be stiff enough with the layer of the skin on both sides. if somebody has tried this out please reply to this post :)
    @FliteTest we still would like some source of your planes here in europe ;) especially now that you have water resistant foam

  • @RTS907
    @RTS907 8 років тому +2

    Awesome way to paint without painting. I still like my idea of having FliteTest printing color on the foamboard before laser cutting the sheets. I sent that idea a year or two ago, maybe larger flatbed printers are still too expensive.

    • @ulaB
      @ulaB 8 років тому

      The problem is that this won't work with the new water resistant foamboard anymore. The brownish paper won't look good with a print on it.

    • @wdave6944
      @wdave6944 8 років тому +1

      Printing directly onto the Addams foamboard is a great idea. If you're a scratchbuilder with a large flatbed printer or plotter then you could whip up some really neat paint schemes.
      Commerically, however, I forsee too many problems. Let's skip the obvious for a moment and talk about pattern alignments. Critical care will be necessary when transferring 'parts' from the printer to the cutter. One at a time... shouldn't be much of a problem - that's what scratchbuilders do. But you need quantity... and need to maintain the same quality too - in an acceptable cycle time.
      Then you have to stock a plethora of paint schemes for each model. And you'd need the space to do so as well.
      I'd be forgiving on an order mixup but I sure would be in a quandry if I ordered a FT-F22 with a wicked Raptor looking skin and instead was shipped a "hello-kitty" by mistake ;-)
      It's not impossible but scratchbuilders like to this sort of thing (paint schemes) themselves anyway.

    Well, I'll try this myself but I'd suggest coming up with a really wicked looking snakeskin... Everybody loves the look of a Diamond-Back Rattlesnake skin!
    You could then easily expand into Red-Dragon Skin, Big-Gator Skin, Itsy-Bitsy-Gecko-Skin, And the inevitable Raptor-Skins. Woooo.

    I think this is a great idea. Question: how do you eliminate the extra info from the plans so that the info does not print? You mentioned eliminating two cut outs on one side. The plans I have seen from FT are usually PDF files... do you have a way to separate the parts and print only what you want?
