I got one last week and it’s an amazing guitar.
I have several guitars, one (a 91 US Strat) I would grab first thing in case of a fire. This Gretsch is the second one I would grab. Versatile, a grabber, it screams and whispers. I don’t know how Gretsch does it so consistently , but I’m glad they do.

I got my first Gretsch Streamliner semi hollow a few months ago. A full hollow a couple weeks ago. I got an Electromatic Double Jet on Monday.
All amazing guitars, but the Electromatic is on another level! Someday I will try a Pro series, when I have a few grand burning a hole in my pocket...

I just ordered a Gretsch G5220 -- basically this guitar except without the Bigsby, and with Broad'tron pickups instead of Filtertrons. It's going to be my first electric guitar -- I've only been playing for about 18 months, and only acoustic so far. Gretsch wasn't even on my radar, but my guitar teacher brought it to my attention. I like the fact that it's not the usual Fender or Les Paul clone that everyone else has -- plus it has a great, unique tone. I can't wait to get it!

Nice review. I bought one of these a year ago, without seeing this. But knew it was what I wanted because I wanted a Bigsby and some sort of hollow body Gretsch. Best all-rounder. Had it setup and a roller bridge fitted. Stays in tune really well. Love it. ❤

Excellent review. I bought the exact same model May 2021 and couldn’t be happier. The body is also mahogany and the fingerboard is walnut on black guitars, I believe. The master volume control is a great idea but, it does next to nothing until the last few degrees of turn, when the volume falls off a cliff. Sound is wonderful with bright trebles and finish is impeccable. Ultra low action on delivery, but a few, fairly minor, string buzzes meant I had to raise it slightly and loosen off the truss rod a little. A cool guitar, looks the biz, sounds fantastic. Love it.

I've had a 5230 for a few years in Airline Silver with the walnut fretboard. Just absolutely great guitars. The only change I've made is to add a Biggsfix, which helped the tuning stability tremendously. You can play just about anything with these Filtertrons.

I guess you can consider it an investment..Guitars that i bought 4 years ago at a 500 or 750 pricepoint went up 200 to 250. You can sell a guitar in good condition at 2/3 of the newprice. Also depends on the guitar ofc but in general... smth like this. So yeah it can be an investment but one that takes patience en to have fun with in the meantime :)

  • @qddk9545
    @qddk9545 Рік тому +1

Nice review. I have one of these and I like it a lot. The PU output comes from: Number of windings (resistance), length and mass of pole pieces and magnet strength, and Filtertrons have
a lower resistance reading than other PUs with the same output. PU aficionados think that inductance is the right measure for output. I don´t know if that i correct, but it certainly gives a
hint of where the resonance of the PUs are situated, which is what gives them their tonality. Single coils normally have a high resonance, and humbuckers a lower one, but Filtertrons are
different, because of the low winding resistance. The resonance comes from from the resistance to inductance relationship.

Hi I love your honest, relaxed, style of reviewing. Your review tipped the scales and I took the plunge and bought one of these guitars yesterday. To make it even better the blue one I wanted was reduced to £388 in Thomann's cyber sale.
One thing I noted was that the version of this Jet guitar without the Bigsby has Broad Tron pickups fitted and not Filter Trons. I have Broad Trons in my Gretsch G-240T Steamliner hollow body.
They have less of that crisp glass Gretsch sound and I am considering changing them to a set of Filter Trons. I think this is silly on Gretsch's part, the two jets are identical except for the bigsby and they should have kept the pickups the same on both guitars.

i bought this guitar in Aleutian blue 2 years ago to relearn on (hadn't held a guitar since i had 2 years of acoustic private lessons at 12-14 yrs old now 43yrs ago), it was so beautiful to the eyes online that i had to have one..basically in the last 2 years, i got frustrated learning, put it down, tried again, put it down..took it seriously for the last 12 months and love it..being basically a relearning know nothing old newbie, i didnt know about action and intonation set up at the time..now i do., i have been buying HB guitars and the Gretsch has took a back seat for 6 months, i checked the intonation from the factory set up today and it was perfect, i had no adjustment to do, so it was 100% intonated from out of the box (maybe i got i good one?), i was astounded..just bought a more expensive new fender player series strat (had to have at least one fender in my lifetime 🤣 ), gonna check it out tomorrow and see if it is perfect from the factory..if not, then Gretsch is my no.1 brand to buy 😁

Just got a new midnight sapphire Jet baritone. I dig it. I’m a rocker. It rocks. Even metal. Very cool guitar. Great for blues. Chords and leads sound great but different - after all they actually are different chords, but you can use your guitar chord patterns and adapt to the situation. I quickly put on a new set of Grover locking Rotomatics to upgrade the tuners and then I immediately put on new lighter strings, Da’ddario 13 - 68. The Grover tuners are very easy to turn whereas the stock sealed tuners were very hard to turn. The lighter strings yielded a definitely much brighter sound that is very useful when using this baritone as a guitar, using guitar playing style. Some people play the baritone more like a bass guitar. In this sense the Gretsch Jet baritone is quite versatile.

Sounds great. I have one on order (Cadillac Green -too many choices). Have you determined if the knobs are plastic or metal? Back in 1987 I walked into a Piano store because they sold guitar strings and Seagull Guitars. I saw a unique looking guitar on the wall, so I asked about it. The dealer said yes someone brought it in to trade on a Seagull, and you can have it for $400 if you want. So I did. It turned out to be a 1978 Super Axe Gretsch Model 7681 with a built in phase shifter. I took it to George's music and had a Luthier go over it, and do a setup. Whilst in the shop a NY collector spotted it and offered a huge amount for it. But I kept it, and to this day it is perfect in every detail. Plays like an SG (smooth as butter). I heard that the custom models are made at the Fender Factor in Calif. -not sure, it doesn't matter anyway. The Luthier (from George's) thought that my 7681 Axe was made in Chicago, but when I looked up the SN it says that it was manufactured in May 1978 @ Booneville, Arkansas.

The Gretsch Electromatic Jet G5230T with factory equipped Bigsby Lightning B50 Vibrato Tailpiece.
Good guitars... from a company that likes ridiculously long naming conventions.
Mine looks just like that one - the classic high gloss Black & Silver/Chrome.
They have a unique aesthetic with the "G" top stamp & knurling on the control knobs (& yeah even the strap buttons are knurled).
I do like a like mine, but I'll be brutally honest - it's the worst guitar I have for tuning stability!
Seriously I'm lucky to get 2 songs between retunes!!
It's also the heaviest guitar I have.

I suspect the tuning issue is the combo of the headstock's string geometries at the top & the B50 on the bottom.
If I keep it, I may decide to do some minor upgrades:
Switch to locking tuners (for easier string changes),
add a "String Butler" to correct the headstock geometries
    & a "Brick's BiggsFix V3 Roller" on the B50.
That should improve the stability considerably.

Great video, i was looking at one of these in a shop (new to me) where I have recently moved to and I really liked it, I wasnt looking for a Gretsch at all but playing it instantly won me over. The guy in the shop said they were £750 but that he could sell it to me for £600 and I didnt blink an eye as it felt and played like a £700 guitar should. He didnt have a clue what the controls were and neither did I which is why when I got home having not bought it I checked online to discover not only the strange control layout but the usual retail price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wont name and shame but neither will I ever cross the threshold of that particular shop again.
Edit: I guess that a bridge with roller saddles would sort out any tuning issues, if there are any. I really did like it, your video has got me thinking again...

From what I understand about Gretsch guitars is that this model is more based on the 1958 model which had thumbnail fretboard markers. The 1953 had block markers and George Harrison's, which I believe was 1957 had the cloud markers.

I came to same conclusion. Same guitar and a vox ac10. I can dial in the jazz, rock, blues, blues rock, rockabilly, Country, Surf, Spaghetti Western, Garage Rock, ect. it's an inexpensive, true vintage tube sound. Basic, no pedals required. My Bigsby was so loose, it fell apart, when I breathed on it. A tech put it back together. The pick guard cracked. I took it off. I play with my fingers anyway, and it just gets in the way of my hand and ability to mute. No case and hard to find the right one, but it has better pickups than others, of that price range. Those pickups work nice, with real tube tones. It's like having a TelaPaul.

i bought a gretsch after watching one of your great reviews. the build is fantastic for the price, the guitar plays and sounds great but it's a huge pain to put strings on it. also the wacky taper on the master volume makes it basically useless. i'm going to try to replace that and maybe i'll play it more. i love your posts. it's almost like hanging out with a friend. keep up the excellent work.

Gretsch are managing to produce affordable high quality guitars with real character - for the price, build quality, sound and playability is off the scale - for any price it’s very good.
It somehow doesn’t feel as though they’re competing directly with Fender and Gibson (or Squier and Epiphone) because their guitars maintain that Gretsch uniqueness and name - you really feel you’re getting a proper Gretsch - a step to the side from the mainstream, slightly leftfield - I’m a fan.

I went Christmas shopping today in order to 'upgrade' my cheapest Epiphone Les Paul Standard that I got for starting my guitar playing 2 years ago ... I was sick and tired of tuning it several times a day and I had already gotten myself into Gretsch (GT5402 Hollowbody) ... however, after I had tried every.single.epiphone Les Paul in the store I just for fun tried this one - and it was love on first strum. Upon getting home I had a moment of panic ('what did I do? it's not a Les Paul?") and fortunately found you and your channel and your review! Phew. THANK YOU - you just made my day! Now, all I need to do is learn to play (btw, what exactly is that chord progression?) but this gives me so much joy!! thank you mucho!!

Interesting video! I used to have a 1950s Jet Firebird with the excellent DeArmond Dynasonic pickups, ( I’m a big Cliff Gallup fan), the bridge was an aluminium Bigsby one on a wooden base which slid all aver the place so your reissue was certainly authentic in that respect. I currently own. a couple of earlier Chinese built Jets,a black single cut and a silver double cut. These earlier guitars just had a single volume and tone control and mini humbucking pickups, these pickups were not to my taste and the black Jet now has Gretsch Filtertrons and the silver one GFS NY11 single coils. The Black Tops on your guitar sound pretty close to the original Gretsch Filtertrons and if I owned one I wouldn’t bother changing them. The build quality of Chinese Gretsch guitars is outstanding, they’re amazing value for money.

Doing these reviews gives me a great opportunity to properly judge these guitars for myself, look closely at them, and actually think about how they make me feel, etc, and also to get the views and experience of others such as yourself. In the case of this Gretsch the result is that we think it's a superb guitar for any money!

This guitar is great. I had Sweetwater do a "setup" -- it was terrible. There was no neck relief. I don't know how it passed their "55 point inspection, let alone a $120 setup. Short story, i got a refund for the setup. I had a Luthier do the setup, and changed the saddle to a rolling saddle -which is great (strings less likely to snap in the V saddle. Anyway, nice review.

I just bought my son a Fender Vintera 50s Strat and it's got me interested in an electric for myself. I keep looking for bad reviews of the this line from Gretsch because I feel like, for the price, it has to have some negative reviews out there, but I can't find them. I feel like I "should" be paying more for an electric. But I absolutely love how this sounds. I guess for ~$600, there's literally no risk. I've paid more for much less. I could never justify a $2500 guitar as a non-performing musician. But $600 doesn't seem like enough :D

@@theguitaristas I picked one up yesterday at the local Guitar Center. Spent 30 minutes in the store looking for a reason not to, but after trying it through half-a-dozen amps, I had to do it. Got it home, pulled the strings off. Tightened some screws--tuners were a little loose, but they tightened right up. Played with the height adjustment on the bridge, which is amazing, btw--basically on-the-fly bridge height adjustment, or nearly so. Put new strings on it. Absolutely love the sound. They didn't have the amp I wanted, so I decided to just put it through my generic amp at home until I spring for a new one. Even on the generic amp with nothing but gain to play with, it sounds so good. Put it through my son's Orange Amp with a chorus pedal... so many sounds from clean to crunch. Sooner or later, Gretsch is going to realize what they have here and adjust the build quality or the price accordingly. Glad I got in under the wire!

I've owned many, many guitars over nearly fifty years' playing and I can't fault my recently purchased 5222. Would happily add this one too. For the sake of argument, if you put this alongside a Duesenberg you couldn't argue why one should cost more than the other. I guess the Duesenberg markets on the 'Made in Germany' nonsense (they're not made in Germany at all - they're finished there), and supplies a lot of high-profile, famous players. I'd rather have four of these Gretsch than one Duesenberg. That's for sure.
