Great list. I will visit that Monastery next time Im there.
Apterta---many different ruins from different civilizations. I think it even had a 2,300 year old mint whose coins were accepted throughout Europe.
Spotted a small fort-like ruin hidden among some bushes, wondered if it was medieval. Then I figured out it was a Nazi gun emplacement.

I'm loving your videos! I'm on an Erasmus exchange in Athens right now and was wondering if you could make a longer video on how to best spend 5 months in Greece, with Athens as my base. I'd love some tips on what to do and where to go from March to July, aiming to dive deep into both the mainland and the islands. Already checked out Corinth and Delphi, which I highly recommend, and even hit the slopes at Parnassus.

Oh, thank you very much! Maybe will do that. For the time being I can only suggest.
So, definitely visit Peloponnese (plenty of videos on my channel). Prefecture of Arcadia and Corinthia are a must and relatively close to Athens. Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and Vytina in Arcadia are a must. Lake Doxa and the broader region of Feneos in Corinthia offer stunning landscapes. Kalamata in Messinia, Peloponnese is also a great choice for early summer.
On the other side, you should definitely visit the island of Aegina. It's like an hour and ten minutes from Piraeus (video also on my channel). Bus schedules there are so well organised and the tickets are very cheap. You literally can see the whole island in one weekend. You should also try visiting Santorini for the views. The earliest you go there the better. I mean the choices are so many it's up to you to decide.
Last but not least and very close to Athens, is the mountain of Parnitha. Coffee or food at Bafi Refuge is a must. Awesome view, amazing pies. Even though the mountain have suffered devastated wildfires many times, there are locations like Bafi Refuge and Mola location that are still untouched and very beautiful.
Other places that I can think of but not close to Athens, is Ioannina and Parga in Epirus, and my beloved island of Lefkada. Absolutely stunning beaches and with regular bus routes to any part of the island if you don't have a car.
If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to contact me again.

Curious, if you were to live anywhere in Greece all year round other than Athens where would it be and why?

    • @topplacesingreece

Hey, nice question. Here's how it goes. Except the historic city center of Athens (Acropolis and the surrounding area) which I really love, I don't find any other good reasons to be living in such a vast cement city anymore.
If I were to choose, I would pick a much smaller city or a village. Kalamata in Messinia, Peloponnese would be on my top list. Why? Because it's much quieter, plenty of gorgeous beaches, close to other popular destinations, touristy enough but doesn't get overcrowded. Same goes for my hometown Preveza or even Ioannina in Epirus. I want to live in a place where beautiful landscapes are at a close distance, so I would have the option of escaping more often.
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind also living in a small or even a remote village, at the footsteps of a mountain and being surrounded by fir trees. Preferably Arcadia region in Peloponnese again. As I grow older I find that I want to escape people and crowds. If I wasn't married with 3 children, maybe I would be a monk now somewhere at Mount Athos, who knows!!!
And don't get me wrong, I love being around people. But Athens plus the nature of my job magnifies that interaction to a degree where you simply get sick of it. Hope I answered your question!

@@topplacesingreece Thank you I really appreciate the response. I concur with everything you said about Athens and have also strongly considered Kalamata as it is close to my mother’s birthplace. I’ve also considered somewhere on Crete like Chania or Rethymno and wonder if you also considered them. Thanks

@@tpop3723 Yeah, Chania and Rethymno are excellent choices too. What's not to like about these places. My only concern (and this may sound ridiculous to some) is that these are close to Souda - NATO base, hence a target. Considering that we live in times that anything can happen, I wouldn't choose Crete right now if I had other options. Extreme scenario, I know but this is just my personal opinion as of right now.
