  • Recently, we embarked on a full-day trip from Chania to these enchanting destinations - Balos Beach and Gramvousa Island, and it was an experience that included discovering a new island where we could swim in crystal-clear waters, and capture breathtaking views from the historic Gramvousa fortress. Where the rest of the afternoon we spent chilling in the Balos Lagoon swimming taking a sun bath, and making lots of pictures and videos.

This island is so pretty and is untouched unlike all those touristy islands like Mykonos !

Balos is one of the worst places you can go on Crete, especially by car. It is even dangerous to go there by car and you have to go down for half an hour from the cliff by foot. I like walking for tens of kilometers when on vacation but it is hell walking there up and down on the hot sun. It looks amazing from above but the beach and water and sand are not good at all. And it smells like donkey sh*t there. Even the regular beaches around Chania are better. Falasarna and Elafonisi are much better places to visit. I wouldn't even go there for the view. It is not worth it.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your challenging experience at Balos. Indeed, the drive and hike can be demanding, especially during peak summer months. However, as shown in the video, accessing Balos by boat, particularly during the off-peak season like in May or Sep/Oct, can provide an entirely different and delightful experience. We truly had a memorable time capturing those moments. Should you decide to visit Crete again, perhaps consider giving Balos another shot, maybe by taking a ski jet from Falassarna Beach. It's a unique experience, especially during sunset when the sun's heat is more forgiving. We hope your next experience will be a positive one. Safe travels!

I visited The Balos lagoon and the Gramvousa beach, the lagoon was pretty with claer water and plenty of fishes and pink sand however I regret to say that it's not much swimming friendly with too many slippery rocks between the soft white sands and the Gramvousa beach was tiny with again lots of boulders and rocks unless get a boat in the sea and swim... And for tourist do not buy the rented umbrellas that the boats offers.. They are useless.. Otherwise a nice outing give it overall 7/10 😊
